The Farmers Arms Hotel was built on the corner of Main and Hailes Street Greensborough in 1864 by James Iredale to cater for the ever increasing number of wood carters and other hauliers carting their wares between Melbourne timber mills and the gold fields. The Farmers Arms Hotel site is currently occupied by the Greensborough Hotel. The proprietor, Mr Monaghan, demolished the Farmers Arms to make way, in 1925 for the new Greensborough Hotel. This photograph shows the original Safeway store in Grimshaw Street Greensborough. The first Woolworths store was located at the corner of Main Street and Para Road c1978. In 1905, Mr. Frank Jarvis and Mr. Tommy Garner formed Conway Stewart & Co. Limited at 13 Paternoster Row EC1, next to St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Today, this area is known as Paternoster Square having been redeveloped after its complete destruction during the Blitz of World War II. Although there is much debate regarding the origins of the Company’s name, it is believed that the name “Conway Stewart” derives from a popular vaudeville act of the day. Conway and Stewart were supposedly a comedy double act who appeared at Collins Music Hall in Islington. The two entrepreneur took a great risk in leaving their secured jobs to start a new enterprise reselling fountain pens made by other manufacturers. They concentrated their energies and invested in importing pens from the United States. After an arduous month of persistent selling of their stock, they reaped the rewards of a rather healthy turnover of more than £13 and 9 shillings. This was a great accomplishment considering that the rent for their business premises was only five shillings a week. Even though this turnover would be pleasing to many new ventures, the strength of De La Rue in the fountain pen market made it impossible for the company to continue selling no-named fountain pens. In the same year, De La Rue reportedly invested £50,000 in a promotion campaign for their new launch, the Onoto. However, Garner and Jarvis soon recognized there was an audience desiring good, reliable writing instruments that were also affordable. This is when Conway Stewart began to capture a market amongst the English. A major rebuilding project took place. Brothers John & Thomas Morgan with local storekeeper Harold Goodwin Taylor designing and building a grand new Guest House with 22 bedrooms plus the original bungalows. Unheard of at the time the guests bedrooms had hand basins with hot & cold running water. This was achieved by building a weir on Stony Creek and piping the water to a high holding tank at the guest house. The dining room was a grand affair, a 4.5 metre high ceiling with beautiful gold leaf cornices, art deco ceiling and wall lights with feature plaster lights in the form of blue bells, wall to wall carpet and Kentia palms completed the picture. Ladies & gentlemen dressed for dinner, the ladies resplendent in their long evening gowns and jewellery would come down the stairway from the entrance hall to the lounge then the dining room. The tables were beautifully appointed with damask table cloths & fine silverware. The kitchen was well appointed with a huge coal fired range and a donkey for hot water. Milk & cream, bacon & pork, chicken & eggs together with vegetables were all home grown on the property. A large ballroom with a beautiful timber floor was the scene after dinner for many dances and party nights with guests from other establishments and locals joining in for the night. A huge fernery was also a feature of the gardens. On Dec.25, 1940 Sylvia Vyanna Morgan passed away. Dorothy had married Roy Warren from Myrtlebank Guest House and Thomas had married Edna Kennedy. In 1942 Nina married Arthur Mangle and in 1946 built Mountain Grand Guest House opposite Grampian House. By 1950 Morgan decided to sell Grampian House and moved to Stawell. The new owners of Grampian House were Fredrick Charles Kingston, a successful bus company operator from Stawell and his daughter Ethel May Mathews who together with her husband Des built the adjoining famous Kookaburra Cafe in 1946. Fredrick had also built a bowling green next to the cafe. In the late 1950's Grampian House Guest House was leased to several people including Mr & Mrs. Hudousek, Paul Loren and people with surname Virtue. It was during this time that the front veranda and pergola were demolished and the house modernised. Nina Mangle and her two sons Arthur & Charles purchased the property and operated it as an overflow for Mountain Grand Guest House. Well known artist Neil Douglas operated a studio on the premises and Horsham identities Evan and Barbara Mackley housed a museum of furniture and artefacts on the site. Annual wildflower shows took over the Hall's Gap Hall during spring and, in the 1930's, transformed it into a veritable wonderland. So popular were these displays that they have continued through until present times, the format has altered but the display of flowers remains the same. Ladies' Committees were formed to sell art and crafts during shows, and much of the revenue from these events went towards a future new building. In 1938, the Wildflower Show was to be held on 30 September and 1 October, and was to be opened by A. McDonald, Esq., MLA. Admission in that year was 1/- (one shilling), with children being half price (a comparison with record 388 shows that this was the same as the 1933 price). Afternoon tea or supper were also 1/- and an entry fee of 3d (three pennies) was charged per exhibit. In that year the organising secretary was H. The School officially began in 1874 under head teacher Robert Harris, in rooms of the then Christmas Hills Post Office Store. By 1879, authorities agreed a new school was required. As with the citing of the Hall, there was considerable local controversy over whether the school should be built on the high point of School Lane, or the current location (then known as Scrubby Point).
