Munition, Trench Art
A set of two spent ammunition rounds complete with projectile, which are souvenirs of World War 1. These are from the 1 inch Nordenfelt machine gun, the projectiles are made from solid steel with a brass jacket, have an exposed steel tip and have a groove near the base. Both the brass cartridge case and the projectile are highly polished and have been chromed (?). These are examples of trench art having been engraved with floral patterns and the words "to Fred from NL". These items were owned by Frederic Harley MM, s/n 910, a WW1 Artillery Gunner in the 36th Australian Heavy Artillery Group who served in France. He enlisted in Frankston and lived in Frankston after returning to Australia. Boots, Jungle
Jungle boots, Vietnam era, used by U S troops and also acquired by Australian troops, prior to adoption of the US leather GP boots.A pair of jungle boots, as new, that were issued during the Vietnam conflict for U S troops, but also acquired and used by Australian troops. Constructed of leather and green canvas, and the instep of both boots has a pair of circular brass eyelets with a several tiny holes for draining water from inside the boot. They have black rubber soles on both boots . In the arch of the heel is the boot size of '(10W)' and the manufacturers stamping of '(C.I.C.)' which is believed to be associated with the principal manufacturer 'GENESCO'. Inside there is an implant for increased wearer comfort. (CIC) and (10W) on the sole near the arch. The tongue has an ink imprint; (10W) (GJ) (3 68) (SPIKE) (PROTECTIVE) -

A small souvenir model of the Australian Army 'slouch hat' complete with folded brim to one side and the 'rising sun' hat badge. The model was presumably stamped from thin Copper plate. The impression of the hat badge is similar to the 1949 'fourth pattern' Australian Military Forces badge with the King's Crown. -

Pack, Equipment
Heavyweight cotton canvas infantryman's pack of the type issued during World War 1. The pack is rectangular in shape with a top flap that secures at the front with two leather straps and brass buckles. There are two side flaps which secure under this top flap with a steel button and serve as weather protection. There are two leather shoulder straps at the back which are secured to a reinforced base at the top of the pack with a strip of leather and brass buckles and slides, the fixed ends of these straps are attached to the pack by stitched and riveted reinforced leather. At the bottom centre there is a leather loop to allow supporting straps to be secured to the pack. Also attached to each reinforced base at the top of the pack is a short length of leather with a brass buckle for attaching the upper ends of the supporting straps. Inside the flap is a partially obscured maker's stamp which reads 'AUSTRALIA C.G.H.F. 1918' with a broad arrow. A checker's mark of a broad arrow and the initials 'SA' are also stamped on the inside. Helmet, Steel M1917
An example of the World War 1 standard USA Army battle helmet issued to infantry troops. This version was known as the M1917 Helmet and is based on the British Brodie helmet with minor modifications. This steel helmet is painted matte khaki, with sawdust added to the exterior finish to provide a non-reflective surface. The brim, which is fitted with an outer steel rim, varies in width from 32 mm at the front to 35 mm at the sides and rear. The helmet inner liner is incomplete. Royal Australian Navy ratings cap worn by able seamen when in uniform, this white cap has a tally band and chinstrap in black material with the embroidered name "H.M.A.S. BRISBANE". This type of cap is a personal purchase for 'wearing out' and is known to sailor's as a "tiddly" hat. The hat has internal red (for Port) and green (for Starboard) lining bands.embroidered with the inscription : "H. M. A. S. BRISBANE" and the name "MAWBY D. A." and "DALE MAWBY" written inside. -

Small statuette depicting an Australian serviceman assisting a wounded comrade. The statuette depicts a scene from a famous moving film taken in New Guinea during World War 2 by Australian War Correspondent, Damien Peter Parer who was attached to the Australian Military Forces. The statuette is made from Pewter and is mounted on a stained wooden base. The following text statement is copied from the AWM website and describes the image in further detail: During the advance on Salamaua VX89711 Sergeant Gordon Raymond Charles Ayre MM, a 58/59th Battalion bandsman from Shepparton, Victoria, in pouring rain assists a wounded mate, VX132355 Private William Oswald Wallace Johnson, of the same unit, across Alan's (Allen's?) Creek to an advanced regimental aid post. Johnson had been wounded by a Japanese grenade on the 13th of July 1943 during an attack on the "coconuts" area. Sergeant Ayre was awarded the military medal for his performance during this action. This is one of the iconic images of the Second World War. Statuette, Simpson and His Donkey, Unknown
John Simpson Kirkpatrick enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps serving as a stretcher bearer at Gallipoli. With the help of a donkey he recovered wounded from the battlefield, often under fire. He was killed in action on 19 May 1915 and was awarded a Mention in Despatches for his act of bravery.Simpson and his donkey has become the most famous of the images arising from Australia's Gallipoli Campaign in the First World WarA small statuette depicting a World War 1 Australian serviceman assisting a wounded comrade who is riding on a donkey. This statuette is made from pewter and symbolises the brave deeds of Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick who, during the early days of the Gallipoli campaign, similarly assisted a number of wounded servicemen. This Army Medical Corps serviceman was a stretcher bearer and commonly known as "Simpson". The statuette is mounted on a stained wooden base which has a small title plate at its front edge.Title plate inscribed "SIMPSON AND HIS DONKEY"
