A Herald newspaper article titled 'Melbourne's First Christmas by John Lahey.' This is Lahey's account of the first year of settlement of Melbourne. Six people landed first in Melbourne - Mary Gilbert, the first white woman to land in Melbourne plus five men landed from Fawkner's boat in August 1835. Mary gave birth to the first white child born in Melbourne - John Port Phillip Gilbert. The trials and tribulations of the first settlers in Melbourne are outlined in this article. Alexander Carroll Dempster was born in Tipperary in 1834 and arrived in Australia in 1853. He joined the Police Force in 1857 and served until 1882 when he was discharged with failing eyesight.
