Letter 0817a; the writer refers to Allan's 21st birthday and his recent letter from Rio. He also writes of prices rising in Australia, the coal strike, and that 'Sydney especially is badly hit'. He also recommends Allan see a film called 'The Secret Land', a record of an American Naval Expedition to the South Pole, if he gets the opportunity. Letter is signed 'Your loving Dad, Stanley Quinn'. Writer of 0817d also refers to Allan's 21st birthday and the coal strike which has affected manufacturing and the availability of materials, especially bricks as all the brickworks are closed down. The letter is signed 'Your Pal Norm'.Quinn CollectionThree-page letter written to Allan (0817.a1-3) from his father, Stanley Quinn, on three sheets of lined cream-coloured paper, headed Liddesdale Avenue, Frankston and dated 25.07.49. The envelope (0817.b) is buff-coloured. Also found in this envelope is a single-sided, two-page letter written on thin off-white lined paper (0817.c1-2) to Allan from his friend Norm headed 1 Selwyn Street, Artarmon, dated 27.07.49. Enclosed with 0817.c are two small black and white photographs (0817.d1-2). 0817.d1 shows a small boy with a model airplane and 0817.d2 the model airplane from a different angle.Letter 0817a is written on the reverse side of three pages of the Melbourne Stevedoring Company's Cargo Tally sheets. The envelope is pre-stamped with an embossed profile of King George V and a crown in white on a red, oval background. Postage is two and a half pence. Envelope is addressed to Allan C/- Swedish Seaman's Union, 156 Montague Street, Brooklyn, New York, USA. The postmark is torn. A number of black and white photographs recording the history of Collingwood Technical School's Boot and Shoe building. This building was burnt down in 1943. Machinery valued at £14,000 was lost. Total damage was estimated at £25,000. It was the only bootmaking school in Melbourne. (Scott p.48). It was replaced by the Footwear Trades building which was constructed between 1945 and 1947. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on 21st February 1945 by the Hon. T. T. Hollway, MLA, Minister of Education. The photographs include: The original Boot and Shoe classroom [1929]-1943; The Burnt out building 1943; Six photographs of the Laying of the Foundation Stone event on 21st February 1945 by the Hon. A small card at the back of the picture reads,’ This Picture was a teaching aid used in St. John’s Kinderg S.S and was found in the Church Ruins after the fire in July 1920 by Nancy McC(Absalom). Later framed by Grandma. St. John’s Presbyterian Church was built in 1875 and was burned down July 21st 1920. A volunteer fireman Mr T Spicer discovered the fire and despite the prompt arrival of the fire brigade, after an hour only the walls and tower remained. Some items were salvaged including vestry furnishings and church register. A bible which had been given to the Church in 1895 was rescued by an unknown young man whose identity remained a mystery until1976 when a Mr Stan Williams of Ballarat told his story. The Church was rebuilt in 1922. The event of this fire remains one of the most significant in the history of Warrnambool. Framed print of kookaburra on branch in natural setting. The bird is coloured blue, green and tan. Background is in muted greens. The light wooden frame is covered in fabric in pinks and green. A patterned metal edge sits atop the fabric. On back of picture, ‘ From Grandmother to Nancy on her 5th Birthday, Aug 20th 1920. This is a relic of the burning of St John’s Church July 21st 1920. Framed set of photographs of Melbourne W1 421decorated as an "illuminated" tramcar for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to Victoria April 21 to May 12, 1927 and the opening of Canberra on May 9, 1927. Tram identified in the 4th edition of Destination City. Note Tasmania is missing from the map on the side of the tram. Two photographs of the tram, a three quarter front on view and a side on view have been framed within a black wooden frame, protected by a glass sheet, with an off white cardboard sheet cut out for the photographs to frame them, cardboard backing sheets with an ink inscription under the two photographs. The rear backing sheet has been tacked onto the wooden frame. Images show the overall object, the two photographs, the text and the rear of the object. Images i2 and i3 updated for scan of the actual negs.
