The South and Port Melbourne Thistle Club (later The South and Port Melbourne Thistle Society) held their first annual meeting at the Temperance Hall, Napier Street, South Melbourne on Monday 22 Aug 1899. They held regular concerts and balls and generally celebrated all things Scottish. They had a male Pipe Band and during the First World War when many men were serving in the military they formed a Ladies Pipe Band. The Thistle Cricket Club played in the Scottish Cricket Competition around the time of, and after, the First World War.Small blue & white edged badge with 'SOUTH & PORT MELB' on the blue edge and 'THISTLE C.C.' on the white edge. The Hallford truck was made by J & E Hall, of Dartford, England, whose business commenced in 1785. In 1926 the Fisher family of Mongan's Bridge took delivery of the 1923 Hallford truck which was used on the farm to transport cream to the Kiewa Butter Factory in Tangambalanga. In 1967, the truck was sold to Mr Greg Bedstead and other members of the Kiewa Valley Historical Society for the KVHS who reimbursed them at a later date. The truck was housed at the Butter Factory for many years and was paraded on special occasions. Photograph shows truck parked outside the original Kiewa Valley Historical Museum which was located at Tawonga Caravan Park and was later relocated to its current location at the Mt Beauty Information Centre. This truck was used to transport cream to the Kiewa Butter Factory from the Fisher family's dairy farm at Mongan's Bridge. At other times a tyre was removed and a belt attached to run a chaff cutter. This truck has historical significance as it is presentative of vehicles which were used by farmers to transport cream to the butter factories by a local family. Furthermore, it has social significance as KVHS members combined their finances to purchase this truck so it would be part of our collection. This post drill press has been made by Melbourne business, Dawn Manufacturing Company. It can be operated manually or by a pulley driven flywheel, with the aid of an engine connected to a power supply. In the late 1800s early 1900s a drill press like this would have been driven by steam from a boiler, the main power source for manufacturer’s power at that time. Dawn’s Golden Anniversary 1917-1967 Catalogue describes this model 611 drill as … “Ruggedly constructed with accurately reamed bearings. The coupling between the main spindle and feed screw engages the full circumference of the spindle, and embraces a ball-bearing thrust race. The pillar, as in all “Dawn Drilling Machines” is a solid bright steel bar, in place of the usual light tubing. Adjustable automatic feed.” And “F. & l. Pulleys extra, if required”. DAWN MANUFACTURING CO. The Dawn Manufacturing Co. was founded in Coburg, Melbourne, in 1917 by the four Blake brothers, who were all engineers. After World War I Dawn was supplying drills Australia wide and the company was growing at a healthy rate. During the depression they remained busy, with employees working 60-80 hour weeks. Dawn was contracted to supply vices and clamps to the Australian Defence Department and munitions factory during the World War II. - 1959 the company was taken over by G.N. Raymond Group. - 1967 the Dawn Manufacturing Co. had distributors in Australia and overseas, including USA, Canada, New Zealand, Asia and the Middle East. - 1973 the Siddons Ramset Limited acquired Dawn. - December 1991, Dawn became a unit of the United States owned Stanley Works Pty. Ltd. - November 1998 Dawn became 100 per cent Australian owned. The drill is a typical tool of a blacksmith, cart wright, wheelwright and garage business. The star, commonly known as a 'pip' is derived from the Star of the Knight Cross of the Military Division of the Order of the Bath. Part of the Reverend Chaplain Major Thomas Bruce Williams, No 556101, Collection.Eighteen officer's rank insignia featuring a gold coloured star. In the middle of the star is a red circle with the motto 'Tria Juncla In Uno' inscribed. Surrounding this circle is a green laurel leaf wreath. This spiky, pointy metal flower holder, often called a flower frog or kenzan, was made around the late 19th to the early 20th centuries by Stayput Products of Melbourne, Australia. The flat metal base has been made in layers with the head of the spikes between the layers. It is likely to be handmade. Heavy flower holders made of non-corrosive metals are designed to sit in the base of a vase, dish, bowl or other suitable holder so that cut flower stems can be pushed into the spikes and held firmly in the arrangement. Flower frogs can be made of glass, ceramics or, more recently, synthetic materials.The flower holder is an example of Victorian era domestic decoration aids that have carried through to the 21st century.Flower holder, rectangular block made from layers of metal, with spikes embedded into the metal. The block is heavy, likely to be lead, and the spikes are strong brass pints arranged evenly in rows. There are remnants of florist's putty between some spikes. Kempthorne Lighting Pty. was established as Coffey Lanterns in East Malvern, Melbourne Victoria in 1931 by brothers Selwyn and Owen Coffey. They manufactured lighting fixtures and fittings including oil lamps for marine use as well as for the domestic market. In early 1936 two other brothers, Erle and Terence had joined the company which was renamed Kempthorne Lantern Works Pty., Ltd. In 1946 Kempthorne joined with a small design team who had developed a domestic fan to form the subsidiary, Mistral fans. The company previously known as Kempthorne Holding Ltd was listed on the stock exchange in 1968. In 1977-1979 Kempthorne Mistral Ltd. Was a holding company comprising of Kempthorne Lighting Pty., Ltd. & Mistral Fans Pty., Ltd. An early Australian made marine lamp by a significant manufacturer that is still in business today making electrical equipment. The item is an important artefact that was made by an early Australian business that started in the 1930s. Over the years this company has demonstrated many innovations to the manufacturer of electrical items. These cuff links were a 21st Birthday gift to Ronald Arthur Edwards from his brother Stan in August 1935. Ron had polio and had problems walking. Stan drowned in 1936 in Tonumbarry Weir spillway.
