Chinese market-gardener’s watering-cans on a wooden yoke. This item was authenticated by the Bendigo Historical Society, and is said to be quite rare. It consists of two large galvanized watering-cans each with a pouring spout, suspended by chains from a well-used wooden yoke. The cans would each have been filled with water, then carried a distance into the market garden and used to water crops. The cans and yoke alone are very heavy, one can only imagine how heavy they were when filled with water.As profits from the gold-fields petered out the Chinese immigrants, (nearly all single men), were forced to seek other occupations. Many moved into furniture building in the East Melbourne area, whilst others went into market gardening . A significant number of Chinese men, realising the potential of the sandy, fertile soil, with a good supply of water, in the Shire of Moorabbin, leased tracts of land in that area to establish a market garden and grow produce for the increasing population of MelbourneAfter the Dendy Special Survey in1841in Brighton, Victoria, the first sale of Crown Land, taking in the whole Shire of Moorabbin, occurred in 1852. These allotments of land were eagerly bought up - some by speculators - although many were either worked by the owner, or leased out as market gardens and "fruit gardens", (orchards). Hugo Wertheim (1854–1919) arrived in Melbourne in 1875. He became a successful agent for sewing machines manufactured by his father’s cousin Joseph Wertheim in Frankfurt, Germany. Hugo married Joseph’s daughter Sophie Emilie and they settled in Melbourne. Hugo made many trips back to the main factory in Germany and, with extensive advertising, established a thriving business for sewing machines, bicycles, pianos under various ‘brand names’ - Wertheim, Electra, Planet, Griffin, Hapsburg. It has been said that Dame Nellie Melba preferred a Wertheim piano for her performances. In 1908 Hugo opened a large piano factory in Bendigo St Richmond, Victoria. His son Herbert maintained the business until the factory closed in 1935.The pioneer settlers and market gardeners of Moorabbin Shire had to be self reliant and made their own clothing and utensils. This sewing machine was one of many items they used to exhibit the skill and craftsmanship of the women in these families. Gold was discovered in Victoria c1850 and people came from all over the world to seek their fortune at Ballarat and Bendigo and surrounding gold fields. This large wooden rocking- box or cradle was used by gold prospectors. A handle on the rocker is pushed back and forth, as the miner put gravel into the top part and finer and heavier particles dropped through a screen, helped along by buckets of water. The bottom part of the device had slats, that caught the heavier metals. After many shovel loads of gravel were pushed through the rocker, the miner would then use his gold pan to sort out the heavy minerals to find gold. Most of the pioneer settlers in Moorabbin Shire left the area to try their luck at gold mining and there was a desperate shortage of workers to maintain the market gardens and supply food to the ever increasing population of Melbourne.This gold prospector's 'cradle' is hand made and typical of those used by many hopeful Moorabbin Shire pioneers as they abandoned their market gardens to try their luck at finding gold in the Ballarat and Bendigo minefields c1850This gold miner's rocker is very old, and very well-used. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Undertakers: Peter Fizelle and Michael Mulqueen formed a partnership in 1898 which continued until Fizelle's death in 1901. It was then that Michael Mulqueen became the sole proprietor of the parlour with his brother John in charge of stables - an integral part of the business as many of the cabs were hired from the ranks next to the Shamrock Hotel. The business continued in this format until 1926 when the brothers purchased a motorised hearse, built in Melbourne by Australian Motor Industries. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Wares: an array of products sits outside the Bendigo Pottery in 1930. The pottery was established in 1857 on the left bank of Bendigo Creek, near the junction of Eaglehawk Creek, and was brought to prominence in 1968 when then owner George Guthrie was awarded two gold medals at the Intercolonial Exhibition in Melbourne. By 1870, the pottery was producing a wide range of items, from stoneware pipes to spirit bottles. The pottery still operates at Epsom today. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. When horses ruled: a carriage building factory located at 230-234 Williamson Street, Bendigo, was purchased by Morrison and Sanneman around 1893. It is thought this factory was previously owned by George Pickles and Sons until 1893, when they relocated to Melbourne.
