This image shows the 1906 Keel House conservatory. It was designed and fabricated in England, then re-assembled in the Ballarat Gardens. It was purely for display, only allowing public viewing through glass windows at either end. It became known as the Keel House because the roofline resembled a boat hull, but this roof profile was specifically designed to ensure that snow would be shed from the roof. It was replaced in 1959 by Cuthbert House, another conservatory which also did not allow public access. An image from the Herbert Richmond collection, gifted in 1982 to the Ballarat Library. The collection contains approximately 200 photographs of Ballarat and district in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, as well as photo albums, glass negatives and other memorabilia. Herb Richmond was a keen photographer, a foundation member and a life member of the Ballarat Camera Club, and a photographer with the Ballarat Courier during the 1940s. The Ballarat Camera Club named an annual award after him. Mr Richmond died in 1981 aged 79. Colin COLAHAN (1897-1987) Born Australia Colin Colahan was a student of Max Meldrum, and was one of the first tonalist painters to have his work purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria. He contributed cartoons to 'The Bulletin'. Colahan was working in Paris in the 1920s and had a studio in Mont Martre. He returned to Melbourne by 1927. He next lived and worked in London in 1936 for the next 22 years. During World War Two his house in Chelsea was bombed and everything destroyed. Some photographs donated to Xavier College, his alma mater, are the only evidence of the destroyed work. Cola ham was an Australian War Artist after 1942, with over 90 of his works held by the Australian War Memorial. He moved permanently to Itsly in 1958. The postcard has a drawing of a traditional landscape of The Netherlands represented by a lake, house with mills, a boat and a child dressed in a colourful, traditional costume. The handwriten text is a letter home and describes the writer Peter's visit with his cousin. Other items addressed to Mrs Elsum are in the archive (see 00180 a postcard from 1915). The connection to Legacy is not known.This postcard has a historical significance for the family involved and remind them the time when Peter was at Holland. Transported to Victoria as deck cargo aboard s.s. Port Darwin. This vessel was ordered by Government of Victoria and was only used in training exercises in Port Philip and had become outmoded by the time the Royal Australian Navy was formed in 1911.Buried by sand in the grounds of the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum. There is no known record of how the "Lonsdale" ended abandoned on the beach at Queenscliff. Originally the land where the QMM is situated was the foreshore at the back of the houses in Beach Street, Queenscliff.
