These two cards have been sent In 1929 by two early Warrnambool amateur radio persons to William (Bill) Douglas, an amateur radio person with the call sign, VK3GA. The cards are QSL cards, sent as a result of radio contacts being made between two amateur radio persons. Bill Douglas (1898-1986) was a Victorian schoolteacher who was the first licensed amateur radio person in the Otway Ranges district. He was licensed in January 1929 and these cards refer to radio contacts in the July of that year. The cards do not feature the call signs of the contacts but were standard cards used by amateur radio people who did not have personalised cards at the time,. One card was sent by J.F. Anderson (VK3WN) whose address at the time was 100 Foster Street, Warrnambool. He was possibly connected to the family of James and Jane Anderson who lived for some time in Foster Street but later went farming in the Nullawarre district. The other card was sent by W. Brown of 23 Mackay Crescent South Warrnambool (call sign unknown). No information has been found on this person.These two cards are of some importance as they are very early examples of amateur radio operations in Warrnambool. .1 A rectangular card, very faded and torn at edges. Born in Richmond, Victoria, in 1947 Bruce Pascoe is a school teacher, deck hand, barman, farmer, Director of Commonwealth Australian Studies project, editor, publisher, and works in Indigenous language retrieval. He published and edited Australian Short Storiesquarterly magazine for 16 years, and was joint winner (with David Foster) of Australian Literature Award (1999) and winner of the Radio National Short Story Competition (1998).( ref macquariepenanthology.com.au/BrucePascoe.html) He is married to Lyn Harwood, has two children and lives at Gipsy Point, Far East Gippsland in Victoria. This is a book produced by Rex and Bernice Battarbee and contains reproductions of aboriginal art work, including the work of several of Albert Namatjira’s children. Reginald (Rex) Battarbee (1893-1973) was the son of George and Mary Battarbee who lived in East Warrnambool at a property called ‘Skiddaw’. Rex’s sister, Florinda was a local artist who was his first teacher of art. Rex became a well-known artist, depicting mainly the Central Australian landscape. He is credited with discovering and fostering the artistic talent of Albert Namatjira, the best-known of the early Australian aboriginal artists. This is one of the few mementoes we have of the artist Rex Battarbee who was born in Warrnambool and spent his early years in this city. This is a hard cover book with the pages unnumbered. The cover is brown with colour reproductions of two aboriginal paintings on the front and back cover. The printing on the front cover is in yellow and white lettering. Orbost had its own milk distribution and butter factory from 1893 to 1969 when Gippsland Consolidated Milk Products took it over and became the new company. This company also included milk supplies from the Bairnsdale to Maffra region in Gippsland. Four years later, in 1973, this company changed to Gippsland Amalgamated Milk Products which included suppliers from Yarram, Foster, Traralgon and Heyfield. It is likely that this carton photo is from 1969-1973. Also, the quart fluid measurement gave way to Metric from 1971 onwards. This badge comes from the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums and is presumably attached to an item of clothing. The Warrnambool Pipe Band was formed in 1906, originally to popularise Scottish music and later to foster a taste for bagpipe music. Simon Fraser, the first Pipe Major, held the position from 1906 to 1910. The band appears to have gone into recess during the latter years of World War One and was apparently re-formed in 1935. Again in World War Two the band was in recess The band has had several changes of title but is today known as the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums. The badge is of interest as an example of one of the badges belonging to Warrnambool & District Pipes and Drums, an important and long-serving band in Warrnambool. This is a multi-coloured cloth badge, circular in shape. The outside edge is machine stitched in yellow and there is a blue band with the wording in yellow ‘Warrnambool & District Pipes and Drums’. In the inner circle there is an image, in colours of white, red, yellow, black and dark blue, of two drums, a staff and bagpipes stitched on a blue background.
