The Homeward Bound reef was discovered in 1865 and was worked continuously until 1880. This image is significant as it shows how Victorians worked during the gold rush era. The Wesleyan Church, Denham Street in Lower Hawthorn, as the area was then called, was opened on 2 May 1886. The building was designed by Geelong architect William Henry Cleverdon and was built of brick in the Gothic style. Its dimensions were 55 x 33 ft and the façade incorporated a rose window and spire 50 ft high. A wooden vestry was placed to the rear. The building and the organ were seriously damaged by fire on 1 April 1970, started by a painter's blowtorch. Gathering of seafarers and LHLG members carrying the Mission flag, at Graylings, property of Frederic Race Godfrey, in St Kilda, on 13 November 1905. Sixty-three men and boys were invited to the picnic. Miss Ethel Godfrey is kneeling on the right hand side, wearing a dark dress and hat. The man holding the ball in the center is thought to be Hugh H. Reid. In an article published in the Church and the Sailor in July 1930 after she resigned from her position of Honorary Secretary, she described this occasion as the first picnic organised by her after Reverend Gurney Goldsmith pleaded for women's help during a sermon at All Saints church in St Kilda the same month. See also item 1643This was the official first picnic of the Amalgamated Victorian Seamen's Mission and the first picnic organised by Miss Ethel Godfrey. A year later she was nominated Honorary Secretary of the newly Ladies Harbour Light Guild. A large group of men of varying ages stand on or beside the first steam train to Hurstbridge. Two hold children on their laps. A small group of seven boys also gather for the photo. The line opened on 2 January 1912 and was officially opened in June.The photo commemorates the culmination of many years of community and political agitation for the extension of the railway line. 100 years later the Hurstbridge railway line remains a vital part of Melbourne's public transport network. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.'
