Brick house in Seaby Street Stawell Lyndsey Browns House

This image shows the house occupied by Thomas Mason and his family in 1883. The man in the centre of the image holding the reins of the horse is possibly Thomas Mason. One of the two women seated in the buggy is possibly his wife Catherine Mason (nee Whelan). This house was built by grazier George Palmer Hall around 1846-1848 north of what is now Lerderderg Street, Bacchus Marsh, at a point close to the Lerderderg RIver. The house and the accompanying farm of over 5,000 hectares was leased by George Ball to George Hobler in the late 1840s and early 1850s. During this time George Hobler's daughter Emily married Henry Bacchus the son of Captain William Bacchus. By 1865 Thomas Mason had purchased the property. Mason named the property Riverton. After his death in the 1890s the property was owned by a number of different people. The house was still in use until 1999 but since this time has been unoccupied and its condition has significantly deteriorated.This image is significant because it depicts one of the earliest houses built in the town of Bacchus Marsh. It is probably the earliest surviving image of this Bacchus Marsh pre-gold rush structure.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. It was last owned and farmed by Claude and Katrine Brown. For many years Legacy was invited to bring junior legatees to Government House for for an enjoyable Legacy Christmas party. There were entertainers, carousels and often a train ride. And the joy of a Christmas present for each child. This photo was published in the March 1945 newsletter so was from the party in December 1944. The caption says 'Oscar the bull was a great success with the children at the Junior Legacy Club's Christmas party in Government House grounds. The fact that Oscar wore boots did not in the least detract from his popularity, judging by the expressions of glee.' The governor at the time was His Excellency Sir Frederick Mann. This photo shows an entertainer dressed as a cow and the children on the lawn of Government House. The toll gate and house was erected at Stradbroke Knoll, Grassy Creek by JC Taylor and sons of Geelong . Construction was completed on Christmas Day 1922. It was moved from Grassy Creek to Cathedral Rock in October 1929 where it stayed until 1936. It was then sold and moved to Lorne. It is the second house on the right in Minapre Street. The Gatehouse keepers at the time were Mr and Mrs Wright. The original Gatekeepers were Mr and Mrs MacKay. They left Grassy Creek with their family on 11 May 1926The GOR Tollgate and house were originally erected by J.C. A photo of Legacy House in the 1950s. Junior Legacy Melbourne purchased 289-299 Swanston Street Melbourne (previously called Red Cross House) in 1956 from the Commonwealth Government with money gifted to Legacy in memory of David H Dureau. The donation was initially used to purchase a different building at 342 Swanston St, which was sold in 1954, and 289 Swanston St was purchased. Melbourne Legacy is still using three floors of the building, with tenants on the ground floor. It was used in a newspaper article about the acquisition of the building for Legacy. It mentions the purchase price was undisclosed. It says the purchase was possible due to a generous gift of money from overseas in 1944. The building would be called the David H Dureau Memorial Building at the request of the donor. The article has a photo of Governor Sir Dallas Brooks and the Legacy President Bob Gaylard.
