The "Hermits" were a group of young men from Collingwood who had camping holidays at Evelyn (now Mount Evelyn) between 1908 and 1911. They took photographs, and were mentioned in a diary kept by two girls who spent their holidays in the area in 1911. The diary and photos were found in a collection belonging to Dorothy Higgs, a sister of one of the Hermits, following her death in 1978. Peter Ruston was born in 1824 in Yorkshire. He migrated to Australia in 1850 where he found work as a bullock driver. By 1858 he had saved enough to buy his own bullock team and carted flour from the mill on the Plenty near Janefield to Greensborough and St Andrews. On 02/04/2016, Greensborough Rotary and Greensborough Hstorical Society members gathered to unveil an updated plaque at the Pioneer Children's Cemetery on the Plenty River. These photos show the new plaque and Steve Whatmough viewing the plaque. Steve is a descendant of the Whatmough family whose children, with their cousins the Partingtons, were buried in this place. In 2013, Gary Partington generously donated farm implements to Greensborough Historical Society. These implements had been used at the family property "Willis Vale" up to the 1960s. Members of the Partington family farmed the area from the 1840s. In this photo, Elinor, Gary and Faye stand behind the plaque that explained the provenance of the displayed implements. Unfortunately, one of these items was stolen in December 2016.
