Book, Susie Cooper et al, The Happy Hermits and Diary of a trip to Evelyn, 1908o

Historical information

The "Hermits" were a group of young men from Collingwood who had camping holidays at Evelyn (now Mount Evelyn) between 1908 and 1911. They took photographs, and were mentioned in a diary kept by two girls who spent their holidays in the area in 1911. The diary and photos were found in a collection belonging to Dorothy Higgs, a sister of one of the Hermits, following her death in 1978. Some of the photos and a facsimile of the diary form this publication.

Significance

The photos and diary provides direct evidence of turn-of-the-century holiday and tourist activity
