The Henty family and their descendants were notable settlers in Australia, initially in Western Australia, then in Launceston and finally in Victoria. Numerous members of the Henty family are buried in the Boroondara General Cemetery.Three quarter length seated studio portrait of Elizabeth Margaret (Milligan) Gaunt, taken using the daguerreotype photographic process, and encased in a standard daguerreotype frame made of tooled leather, velvet and gilt metal. Margaret Gaunt is dressed in a pale silk dress, typical of the 1860s, with a buttoned bodice and wide sleeves. She appears to be holding a book in her right hand. The sitter was the half sister of Mary Ann Lawrence (1821-81), the wife of Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' and 'Field Place', Kew. She married Charles Gaunt (1842-1916) at St John's Church of England, Launceston in 1868. Alice (Henty) Hindson, born in Portland in 1852, died at 'Field Place' in Kew in 1932. She was the daughter of Francis Henty. The portrait has added artistic and aesthetic significance as a signed photographic portrait by Lafayette Photographic Studios, Collins Street, Melbourne. The studio flourished from 1906-1930. Photographic portrait of Alice (Henty) Hindson (1852-1932), one of the daughters of Francis Henty and Mary Ann Lawrence, taken and signed by the internationally renowned London photographer 'Lafayette'. The oval photograph is encased in a brown calf skin case. The portrait represents the sitter in middle age, wearing a black dress and a white lace collar. Alice Henty had married John Hindson in 1875 at Trinity Church, East Melbourne. The couple were to live at 'Shrublands' in Canterbury from 1883. Her husband died in 1919 and it is likely that the portrait was taken after that date. She was to donate 'Shrublands' to the Anglican Church in 1923, after which it became St John's Home for Boys (and girls). Alice Henty's sister Louisa Henty died at her home 'Field Place in 1924. Alice was also to die at Field Place in 1932. The former City of Kew in Victoria issued badges to council employees performing public roles. The Society has other badges issued by the City for roles such as Parking Attendant, Swimming Pool Attendant etc. Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1960s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. A nickel and enamel identification badge issued to the hall keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall by the City of Kew. The locket is designed to be worn as a pendant. The two hand-tinted encased oval portraits are of an elderly woman on the left and an elderly bearded man on the right. The inlaid locket is probably Indian given the style of the floral inlay on the front and reverse. This souvenir cup of the Coronation of King George VI of England in 1937 was the official design of the British Pottery Manufacturers Federation. Good quality souvenirs such as this one sold well in Australia in the Coronation year and are collected still today. The Coronation was held in Westminster Abbey in London on 12th May 1937 following the abdication of King George’s brother, Edward VIII, in December 1936. The Coronation was celebrated with the issue of medals, coins, stamps, official and unofficial gatherings and the production of memorabilia. The Coronation was the first to be filmed and broadcast on radio and the first to feature an outside television broadcast. This souvenir cup is of interest as an example of the type of souvenir sold in Australia in 1937 to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of England. It is an attractive item and will be useful for display. This is a souvenir cup issued for the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in May 1937. It is made of white china with the body of the cup tapering slightly to the top rim. One side of the cup features a colour image of a crown, a wreath and the initials ‘G’ and ‘E’ and the other side has a colour image of King George and Queen Elizabeth, with a crown on top and encircled by leaves and acorns from an oak tree. The card relates to the Official Centenary Ball held in the Warrnambool Town Hall in March 1947 to celebrate the city's Centenary in 1947. Warrnambool was founded as a port settlement to service the farming interests in the area, with the first land sales held in Melbourne in July 1847. The leaflet is a programme of the Civic Memorial Service held in the Botanic Gardens in Warrnambool in February1952 on the occasion of the death of King George VI of England.
