Album (Item) - Photograph album, Mr and Mrs Gurney Goldsmith, The Mission to Seamen in Melbourne, 1905-1910
... Mission to Seafarers Victoria 717 Flinders Street Docklands ...This album depicts events, mostly the many picnics organised with the help of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild from 1905 to 1910. Page 1: 1905 Page 2: Page 3: Page 4: Page 5: Page 6: This album is significant as it depicts all the work of Reverend Alfred Gurney Goldsmith. According to an article it seems Mrs Goldsmith was often the photographer. The first photographs shows the picnic in Graylings where the reverend invited Ethel Godfrey to create the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild. Gurney Goldsmith was the first reverend to document the life of the Mission using photography, as a marketing tool. Some of the photographs were published in the Jottings. And probably sent to the Head Office on London. It is also interesting as the photographs shows the life of seamen on board their ship, their clothing etc.See descriptions underneath most of the photographs. All the photographs are different numbers written in pencil at the back. Some numbers (from 1 to 4) were added probably later to reposition the photographs but the work was not systematically.reverend alfred gurney goldsmith, mrs goldsmith, mission to seamen, picnics, seamen, ships, lhlg, ethel augusta godfrey 1861-1935, hugh ronald reid, soccer, anthropology -

Leisure object - Baulk circle templates, Alcocks & Co, 1860-1960
... Mission to Seafarers Victoria 717 Flinders Street Docklands ...These items are known as baulk circle templates. The larger one stamped Alcock & Co would have been made before 1888 (this is clear from the address). The middle one is more likely to have been made during the late 19th or early 20 century. The smaller on made of ply would have been made much later in the 20th century. The person maintaining the Billiard Table uses one of these templates to mark out a semi-circle on the table cloth in a particular position determined by the rules of the games of billiard and snooker. The semi-circle is known as the Baulk Circle. Together with a line across the table at the diameter of the semi-circle , known as the baulk line, the baulk circle plays a crucial part in these games. For example, the opening shot of each game is played from the baulk circle; in the game of billiard, if an opponent's ball crosses the baulk line, it may lead to his ball being “protected “during the next shot.A billiard room was a feature of all the Missions over the world.Set of 3 large semi circular wooden tools.pool, snooker, billiard, games, mission to seamen, mission to seafarers, alcocks, baulk line, baulk circle -
