This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. The designation "Nippon porcelain" refers to porcelain made in Japan for export to the west, and stamped with the word Nippon on their bases. This practice began in 1891 in response to the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act, which forbade the import of items that weren't "plainly marked, stamped, branded, or labelled in legible English words." Unfortunately, many reproduction or fake pieces were also produced. In 1921 "Nippon" was no longer accepted by U.S. Customs Agents as the correct name of origin so from then on, imported Japanese porcelain was supposed to be marked "Japan". This information helps us to establish provenance of this item as after 1921.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is also an excellent example of Japanese porcelain of the early 20th century.A small teacup and saucer with a design of a couple in a garden. The design is repeated on the saucer. There is a circular pattern in red and gold around top of the cup and the rim of the saucer. Gilt decorations are included on the handle and around the inside of the cup.Under the saucer: Maker's mark inside a triangular shape and below a crown: "FINE CHINA/ Royal Nippon/ MADE IN JAPAN"domestic items, chinaware -

Westminster Fine China Australia started in the Melbourne suburb of Cheltenham at 7 Arnold Street, in 1954 by Stanley Rogers and Son Ltd. They initially used imported blanks from Japan, which were made to their specifications, and which were then decorated locally. They produced a standard range of shapes for souvenir ware, later expanding into a wide range of tea sets, dinnerware and many other styles of china ware. The Abbey mark, based on Westminster Abbey in London, was used from the start of production until about 1962.The Hume Weir was constructed in the late 1920s and was a critical state in the development of water management in the Murray Darling Basin. At the time of its construction it was the largest water reservoir in the British Empire. Small bowl with gold trim printed with an image of the Hume Weir, Albury. Celluloid dolls were very popular in the late 19th to mid 20th century. They were lighter and less fragile than porcelain dolls and were therefore more durable. Celluloid is one of the first synthetic plastics ever created. It is made from wood products that include cellulose nitrate and camphor. First created in 1863, it was a popular material to make items as diverse as jewellery and dolls from the 1870s through the 1930s. Celluloid is flammable, deteriorates easily if exposed to moisture and can be prone to cracking and yellowing.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is also representative of a domestic item common in the 1930s.2 miniature celluloid dolls dressed in hand-made clothes. Rodd was an Australian company which was established in Melbourne by George Rodd in 1919. The early name of the company was G & E Rodd, and it made a large selection of jewellery and flatware. By the late 1930's they had become the leading manufacturing jewellers in Australia. Their items were marked with their trade name Apex. When the firm became a public company in 1948 the marking of their wares was changed to Rodd. The company became well known for its high-quality flatware or cutlery. This determines the provenance of this spoon as being c1950..A silver sugar spoon produced by Rodd, Silversmiths from Melbourne, Victoria. From the Argus, Friday 18 July 1879:- SAFETY MINING CAGES. The report of the board on safety mining cages was laid on the table of the Legislative Assembly fortnight The board, which has tested the following inventions Nances, Williams patent, Jackson and Middleton's patent Sesmours patent, Allans patent, and Hassan a patent, reports as follows - 1. That the preponderance of evidence given by miners and others qualified to form an opinion is strongly in favour of the adop-tion of a safety cage for general use in the mines of this colony, provided that a reliable invention can be brought forward, and its practical utility satisfactorily determined 2. That in view of the rapid increase of cage accidents, and supported by the evidence before them, the board are of opinion that some special provision should be made to check such a prolific source of danger as is shown to exist in the working of the shaft and machinery employed for winding purposes. 3. That this check could be imposed by means of such a regulation as that at present contained in the statute, i e -" Every cage used in a mine shall be fitted with special and suitable appliances to prevent its sudden fall down a shaft and also to prevent its coming into contact with the poppet heads." The board, however, consider that mine proprietors should be permitted to exercise their own discretion in the selection of safety cages, but safety hooks and balance catches must be used in connexion with every case 4. The most common belief is that Toby Jugs were named for an 18th-century Yorkshire man who got the nickname Toby Fillpot after he drank 2,000 pints of Yorkshire stingo (ale). Original jugs usually showed a seated figure but over time they evolved to be character mugs, often featuring well known personalities. Simon Cellarer was the subject of a 19th century English folksong. The keys on the handle are those to his cellar, full of great wines and ales. He was always good for standing a drink for his friends. It was issued from 1936 to 1960.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. The Ernest Lehmann Co was founded in 1881 by Ernest Paul Lehmann in Brandenburg, Germany. Lehmann exported vast quantities of toys to the United States from 1895 to 1929 (excluding years of WWI). In 1921, Mr. Lehmann’s cousin, Johannes Richter joined the firm and built on the Lehmann reputation by patenting toys. Lehmann specialized in lithographed tinplate, mechanical transportation toys, and figures known for colorful patina. This toy was manufactured between 1924 and 1935. The Lehmann catalogue describes the toy as “[a] Mexican zebra team. The zebra refuses to be tamed and leaps about wildly.” It is believed to have been inspired by an unsuccessful German stud farm in Dar es Salaam that attempted to cross-breed zebra with domesticated horse.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is representative of popular children's toys in the 1920s and 1930s.This is a tin, lithographed, windup toy featuring a zebra and Mexican style driver. The seated driver has a green top and cream trousers and yellow and green pointed hat, zebra with red ears and cord tail. The cart is red and cream, embossed with the Lehmann company emblem and other patent information. This "lady’s" fruit knife was used up to the late 1900's by influential and "well off" ladies, not only as a fashion statement but as a practical tool when away from the kitchen/home to peel fruit and provide a cutting instrument for small items. The first true stainless steel was melted on August 13,1913. However, it did not produce blades that held an edge nor could edges be put onto blades easily so its inventor, Harry Brealey soon earned the reputation of being the inventor of the "knife that would not cut". Over the following decade further developments to the composition of stainless steel led to its wide use in the manufacture of cutlery.A small fruit knife with stainless steel blade. The album contains early images of the School at the new site in Torrington Street, Canterbury. The photographs have extensive captions that date and document key events in the School's development. Grey cardboard album made up of twenty-four pages held together by blue cords and a dark blue ribbon. Pages are loosley in date order [note incomplete years] document a range of school activities, at Camberwell Girls Grammar School orginally known as St Mark's School, Camberwell from 1927- 1959. Locations include the now School site with the original house "Torrington" with early images of classes amd students in 1927; 1931-1932 Scenes in the School grounds including Kindergarten classes; forms and sporting teams. Pageants held in 1932 include the Shakespearean Pageant held 23rd April and the Pageant of all Nations. Formal team and class photographs taken by the photogrpaher Stuart Tompkins, Camberwell are included in 1933 and 1935. 1932 snapshots taken in 1932 Kindergarten with English children sent to Australian for safety with teacher Miss Nancy White. Sports Day and Combined Sports Day from the 1950s and a School holiday tour of Heron Island and a Coronation pageant both in 1953. Dedication of the Secondary block 10th March 1956; Kindergarten at St Hilary's with Mrs Kilgour in 1957. The last page shows an image of Principal Mrs AR Mace [former name Miss Louisa Stafford Taylor] with her husband Canon Mace at a School Sports Day 1959. -

ROBINA MARSHALL was born on 30 November 1833 (Lerwick, Shetland, Scotland, United Kingdom as the first child of Andrew MARSHALL and Barbara GROAT).She had one sibling,,who died on 19 December 1919 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. In 1854, left Liverpool on the Stamboul on 18 May and arrived Melbourne on the 21st of August at the age of 20. She went to Bendigo to help her sister Lillian (possibly Gibson). While in Bendigo she met and married Charles Fox on 13 September 1855 in Sandhurst, Bendigo. and they had two children Charles and Edward. Charles FOX was born in 1857 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia (Ballarat East).He died on 10 April 1862. Edward FOX was born on 20 January 1862 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia (Ballarat West). When Edward was 4 years of age when husband Charles died. She then moved to Ballarat and at the age of 31, she married John Smith WATSON,son of William WATSON and Agnes Nance SMITH, on 30 November 1864. John Smith WATSON and Robina MARSHALL had the following children: 1. William Andrew WATSON was born on 19 June 1865. 2. Barbara WATSON was born in 1871.She died about 1873. 3. Robina (Ruby) WATSON was born on 27 December 1866 in Cheltenham, Victoria, Australia.She died on 08 September 1903 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. 4. Adam Arthur WATSON was born on 19 June 1874 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.He died on 12 July 1954. 5. Alexander WATSON was born about 1877 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. 6. Lady Talbot Drive is a 24 kilometer scenic rainforest car journey which passes a number of walks and waterfalls in the Yarra Ranges National Park. Lady Talbot Drive is named after Lady Sarah Elizabeth, the wife of Sir Reginald Talbot, who was the Governor of Victoria from 25th April, 1904 to 6th July 1908. At ‘Dalriada’, previously ‘Clifton’, 77 Union Road, corner Bona Vista Avenue (dem.) Home of Charles and Sarah Steele pictured with Bertrand Steele and wife Amy, daughter of John Woodhead of ‘Kirklands’. ‘Dalriada’ was built on Woodhead’s land. In 1892 Bertrand purchased the pharmacy on S.W. corner Canterbury/Union Road and moved it to the ‘new’ Surrey Hall. By 1894 he had returned it to its former site where he remained in business until 1900 when he married Amy and went overseas. In 1910 Bertrand Steele became Professor of Chemistry in Brisbane. As his son-in-law, Bertrand was executor of the estate of John Woodhead of ‘Kirklands’. Charles Henri Dillon Steele (1869-1935) - Parents: Samuel Madden Steele and Harriet Sarah Acock. He married Sarah Margaret Russell. They had 2 daughters Margaret Dillon Steele who married William Brayshay Woodhouse, dentist, and Harriet Vevers Steele. From Dentistry Museum site: “Charles Henry Dillon Steele was one of the pioneers of Dentistry in Victoria. He was born in England in 1869 and came to Melbourne in 1889. He was registered by the Dental Board in 1890 and practiced in Collins Street until his death in 1935. His daughter Margaret Dillon (Nancy) Steele graduated BDSc Melbourne in 1929 and obtained the degree of DDS in Toronto in 1931. She returned to Melbourne and rejoined her father in practice at 90 Collins Street and later at 147 Collins Street. In 1935 she married William Brayshaw Woodhouse (BDSc, DSc Melbourne) who bought the practice of Mr. Steele in that year and continued in practice there until 1980. Their son Anthony Dillon Woodhouse graduated BDSc (Melb) 1958 and DDS (Toronto) in1966 and continued in the old family practice established by Mr. Steele." (Dr. Tony Woodhouse, May 1984) Sarah Steele - Born Sarah Margaret Russell, after her marriage to Charles Henry Dillon Steele was very active in community work, notably as President of the local Patriotic League. John McNaughton was also president of the 1929 Ballarat Teachers' College Dramatic Club. The 1929 Ballarat Teachers' College Council comprised of Miss A. Ballinger, Mr R. Broben, John H. McNaughton, Mr R.P. Warriner and Miss Monahan.Crimson soft covered booklet of 50 pages relating to the Ballarat Teachers' College. It belonged to John McNaughton. The magazine includes the following images: Ballarat Teachers' College Staff and Students; women's tennis; football, men's tennis; hockey; Ballarat Teachers' College Council; visit of Bendigo Teachers' College. The Ballarat Teachers' College Football team included: C. Goltz (Captain), A.M. McPherson (Vice-captain), S.C. Hender, Rex Broben, N. Povey, F. Hickey, J. Heard, J. Johnson, J. Thomas, R. Watson, J.
