This cummerbund is part of a winter mess dress uniform belonging to Bernard Farley during service with the Australian Airforce. Worn in 1978, this cummerbund style was first developed in the 1950s and continues to be worn as mess uniform in the present day.This item has aesthetic significance and is a representative example of uniform design from the 1950s to present day. This item has clear provenance, having been donated by RSL member and Secretary (2019), Bernard Farley after its use during Bernard’s service in the Airforce. As a former member of the Australian Airforce and member of the Warrnambool ex-service community, Bernard’s uniform has great social significance, telling a broader story of life after service.Dark navy blue broad waist sash which forms part of a dress uniform. Elasticised woven fabric in a rectangular shape fastened with two strips of velcro. A label is attached to the interior along the seam attaching the velcro. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Black and white photograph of an ornate bandstand built on a grassed area and set high with seven wooden steps leading up to the platform. Under the domed roof, wrought iron lacework extends between the six supporting columns and an ornate, waist-high lacework balustrade encloses the space. At ground level, the bandstand is enclosed by a fence and in the background are leafy trees. Within the bandstand a brass band can be seen performing. The band is the St. Hilda's Band with Frank Wright as its conductor. This vital fundraiser event was held at Lady Fraser's house, opened by Lady Forster and featured in respective issues of Punch and Table talk , October 12th 1922. Also reported in the Argus on Monday 9th of October 1922.The event raised important funds towards the costs of opening the Dome Gymnasium at the 717 Flinders St Mission to Seafarers. The building became known eventually as the 'Norla Dome Gymnasium". Built in 1947 by A.V.Jennings and Co. Lived in for 34 years by Sir Billy and Lady Sneddon.Folder compiled by Richard Carter (C.E. Carter & Sons, RESI) containing various plans, title and notes on the development and extensions to the house, of significance because it was the home of Liberal Parliamentarian and leader of the Liberal Party Sir Billy Snedden.(1926-1987). Built in 1947 by A.V.Jennings for J.M.C. Pratt. Sir Billy and Lady Snedden bought the property in 1963 and Lady Snedden sold it in 1997.
