Bob Hymans Collection Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. George Evans is the man in the photograph. 'Glenara' is the homestead, which is situated in the Deep Creek valley at Bulla. It was the home of Walter Clark, who moved from NSW to Victoria in 1853 and purchased land on the banks of Deep Creek. Four years later in 1857 his homestead was completed. In the same year Bulla Racing Club held its first annual meet on the property. Later that year, Alister Clark purchased the homestead from the family estate and began developing an extensive rose garden on his property. The buildings were used as clubrooms by the Sunbury Football Club when in 1953 Sunbury Football and Cricket Clubs moved from their sports ground in Evans Street to the new recreation ground in Riddell Road (Clarke Oval). The mansion in the photograph is Rupertswood, in Sunbury, which William Clarke built in 1874 - 76 on land that he had purchased in 1840.Since Rupertswood Mansion was built it has been the venue a variety of events and owners as well as the Clarke family. The following was reported in the Herald newspaper on 17th April 1919 when a stock train travelling north crashed head-on with a goods train coming in the opposite direction. The driver thought he had been given the all-clear to proceed into Sunbury and it was only when the train was approaching the Macedon Street bridge that he saw the red light and it was too late. The accident caused damage to rolling stock and disruption on the Bendigo and Maryborough lines. This image shows the train coming from Bendigo, which smashed onto the platform at Sunbury lying on its side. The track was cleared by that afternoon. The house in the photograph is the Gatehouse for Rupertswood Mansion. The photograph was taken when the students from Bulla and Mickleham Primary Schools combined to attend a camp at Beechworth in 1988. During that time the children were engaged in a number of different outdoor activities as a component of their outdoor education. Recognising some of the native birds of the area was one of their activities where the children experiences the birds actually landing on them.The varied activities that the children engaged in at the school camp helped to give them a better appreciation and understanding of the natural environment. The children from Bulla Primary School were taken on an excursion to Gellibrand hill Park which is a short distance from the School. The emphasis on the day's excursion was to identify the native fauna in the park as well as the vegetation.The property was originally settled by the Greene family in 1843. In 1980 the State Government purchased the property and it is now one of the state's parks where the natural vegetation has gradually been restored on the property. The children from Bulla Primary School visited Glengala Primary School near Sunshine in March 1993. During their visit they joined in a number of activities with the Glengala children. The mural of an impression of Macedon Street in Sunbury 100 years ago was painted by Frank Breen, on the brick garage wall of the Catholic Presbytery and it faced the garden in front of the former Sunbury Courthouse. Before the railway arrived in Sunbury in 1859, Macedon Street was the town's business centre. Early local businesses and and institutions that the artist included in the mural include on the LHS former courthouse, Out Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Sir John Franklin Hotel. St. Mary's Church of England is adjacent to the Rose Garden. Alister Clark, a former Bulla resident and a rosarian, developed many different species of roses at his Glenara property. The church in the image is the former St. Michaels Catholic Church that was on Sunbury Road in the small Bulla township. After holding religious services at the Daniel property 'Narbonne' at Oaklands Junction until 1876, the permanent church building opened 0n 19th November 1876. Services were held there until the land was sold in the 1980s and the building was demolished despite undergoing renovations in 1978. Members of the Catholic faith then worshipped at the Sunbury Catholic Church.
