A portrait of a former Junior Legatee, Noel Shiels who had enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in World War 2. It was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). Research on NAA.gov.au and DVA confirms it was Noel Lindsey Sheils Service No 430062, who was born 31 March 1924 in Preston who joined the RAAF when he enlisted on 4 December 1942, he became a pilot and his rank was flying officer and was posted with the 37 Squadron. His father was James Howard Sheils Service No 158 of the 1st Bay AFA who died in May 1931 leaving his wife and 5 children. Part of the Leo Reoch Cohn Collection. Leo Reoch Cohn served in both World War 0ne and World War Two. He enlisted in the 1st AIF on 6.5.1915, initially in the 22nd battalion (No. 1039), aged 18. Shortly after, on 11.9.1915, he transferred to the 8th LHR and embarked for Egypt on 23.9.1915, serving in both Egypt and Palestine. During that period of service, he transferred to the 1st Australian Light Car Patrol on 8.9.1917. This unit later became the 1st Australian Armoured Car Section. Leo began his return journey to Australia on 16.5.1919. Shortly after his RTA, he was discharged. While on active service overseas, he was hospitalized on a number of occasions due to illness. During World War Two, Leo enlisted in the 21st Battalion VDC (No. V360272) on 18.5.1942 at the age of 44. He was appointed Lieutenant on 25.6.1942. Leo's VDC service was terminated on 31.10. 1945 following the end of World War Two. .1) Tailored khaki woollen officer's dress jacket with silk like fabric lining. 1. Jacket - Black woollen uniform jacket. 5 brass buttons on front, 4 front pockets. The top two are held shut with small brass buttons. Epaulettes held down with small brass buttons. The rank insignia of LT.COLONEL are on the epaulettes. The sleeve cuffs have two small brass buttons. The motif on the buttons is "AUSTRALIAN MILITARY FORCES". There are 4 pearl coloured buttons inside the collar. 2. Trousers - black. Grey welt on trouser legs. Zip fly. 3. This is a group photograph of RASvy serving and retired personnel at a farewell to LTCOL Peter Constantine AM, at the School of Military Survey, Bonegilla, VIC, 3rd December 1981. LTCOL Constantine was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1975 to 1976 and CO of School of Military Survey (SMS) from 1976 to his retirement in January 1982. The contingent of serving and retired personnel from units across Australia travelled in civilian attire by bus to Bonegilla for the occasion culminating with a farewell dinner. Most personnel appearing in uniform were instructional staff from the SMS. LTCOL Constantine was one of RASvy’s most revered officers in this era, with 32 years of meritorious service as a leader on active duty in Vietnam in 1969 and the commanding officer of the Regiment and School.
