Supper Cloth, Belgian Supper Cloth, 1915
The supper cloth was brought to Australia and presented to the Shields family. Mary Ann Stebbing (nee Shields) then handed it on to her daughter Nancy Jean, who married Alfred Marshall in 1937. On Nancy's death, the cloth came into the possession of her daughter, Nolene Menz (nee Marshall). This large cloth with its noteworthy hand stitching is an example of the range of textile memorabilia generated during World War 1. It links a local Buffalo River family to the 1914-18 conflict.Framed embroidered white linen cloth depicting a tribute to ANZAC soldiers by the women of Belgium, dated 1915. The tribute takes the form of an ANZAC soldier and words in the English language.Accompanying the ANZAC soldier presenting arms are the centred words: "ANZAC 1915" "OUR HERO, WE'RE PROUD OF HIM". Around the border of the cloth it reads: "WE ARE PROUD OF AUSTRALIAN BRAVE SOLDIERS WHO NOBLY DID RESPOND TO THE FIGHT FOR KING AND COUNTRY. HONOUR ON US ALL AND TO AVENGE BRAVE BELGIANS WRONGS. Artwork, other - Public Artwork, Boer War Memorial by James White, 1906
The Boer War Memorial was created by sculptor James White in honour of Australian Soldiers who fought in the South African War (1899-1902). White used the electrolytic copper deposit method to produce this large statue, which is sometimes mistaken for a cast bronze work. The Foundation stone was laid on 18 May 1901 by H.R.H The Duke of York (George V). The sculpture was unveiled on the 1st November 1906 by His Excellency Baron Northcote G.C.I.E., C.B. Governor General of Australia and then Mayor of Ballarat, J. J. Brokenshire. Bravery and mateship are beautifully captured in depiction of a scene taken straight from the battlegrounds. Today the memorial is a much-photographed tribute and exploration of the friendships and struggles of men at war. A proud cavalry horse bears the weight of two men in the chaos of the battlefield. The Boer War in Africa was an early example of the Australian Colonies sacrificing men and equipment for Britain to defend it’s Empire against colonial insurgence. The memorial is of historical and aesthetic significance to the people of Ballarat.Horse and figures, bronze mounted on bluestone base and granite plinth, plaques list the war dead. The artwork depicts two soldiers and a horse. A British soldier is being succoured by an Australian mounted rifleman. In honour of Australian Soldiers who fought in South Africa 1899-1902. Foundation stone laid 18th May 1901 by H.R.H The Duke of York (George V). Unveiled 1st November 1906 by His Excellency Baron Northcote G.C.I.E., C.B. Governor General of Australia. J. H. The famous Tobruk Fig Tree was named because it marked the entrance to a network of underground caves used to treat wounded soldiers. It became known as the Fig Tree Hospital. The caves became a place where wounded soldiers could be stabilized before being transferred to the Australian General Hospital. The Fig Tree was the only feature in an otherwise barren desert and an easy target for German artillery who heavily shelled the site for several hours per day. A cutting from the tree was brought back to Australia and planted at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance. The 2/24th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army, which served during World War II .A unit of all-volunteers, it was formed in July 1940 from primarily Victorian volunteers and was known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. The Unit was granted the Freedom of the City by the Rural City of Wangaratta in 1996 and one of the first, if not the first, to receive this type of honour.
