Book prize awarded to T Boyd (enrolled 1873) for excellence in Writing by Principal F J Thomas in 1874. The book was donated to the school by Sheila (Campbell) Edwards who purchased it from a secondhand dealer in Melbourne.During these early times book prizes were ordered from London where they were specially bound and embossed with the College crest. F J Thomas had an illustrious career at Ballarat College. During his tenure as Principal it was discovered the BA after his name stoold for Bonn Academy (Germany) not, as may have been implied, Bachelor of Arts. Once discovered he left the State under 'not too dignified circumstances' as Mein records in the 1964 History of Ballarat College, p. 19. The WWI Death Plaque (Death Penny) was issued to the next of kin of servicemen/women who fell in the Great War 1914 -1918.The memorial plaque would be accompanied by a Memorial Scroll, a letter from Buckingham Palace and often a letter from the deceased's commanding officer. They would not usually arrive as a single package, but as a series of separate mailings. In this case we have the letter from Buckingham Palace. Wilfred (Wiff) Graham Salmon attended Ballarat College 1902 - 1910. He enlisted in 1915 and embarked as a driver with the 4th Field Artillery Brigade. He transferred to the Royal Flusing Corps in 1916. He was killed fighting raiders over the Thames Valley near London on 7 July 1917. 'Wiff' was reputedly the first person to die defending London from a foreign invader since the time of the Norman Conquest. His brother Robert Arthur Salmon was also an old collegian. Other possible family members who are old collegians include Nellie Florence Salmon (ent CPLC 1907; DB 1.8.1899), John Walter Salmon (ent BC 1898; DB 22.11.1889), Geoffrey Salmon (ent BC 1910; DB 3/11/1896). Wilfred's brother Robert (Bob) Salmon is mentioned in the school's 1964 history by Gordon Meins p.68..."Captain (then Lieut) Bob Salmon M.C. on one occasion worked for 7 nights straight in No Man's Land and is credited with rescuing nearly 300 of our wounded." This book was awarded to Mary Isabella Macdonald for second prize in Third English History in 1886. Mary entered Clarendon Ladies' College in 1885. On the original register it states that Mary was enrolled by her father named William who's occupation is noted as "Squatter" and who resided at Nhill Station in Nhill.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. The three volumes were awarded to Fanny Cadden in 1882 for a Wanliss Prize in History in the sixth form. Fanny entered Ballarat College in 1879 at the age of 13. Her brother, Charles, entered in 1881 at the age of 14. In the original register parent/guardian is listed as Simon Cadden, and the address as Alfredton.During 1877 - 1891 Ballarat College accepted enrolments from female students. The school holds the original register of this period and notes that Fanny Cadden entered the school in 1879 at the age of 13. Work began on the Library construction in 1968. This was when it was known as Ballarat College of Advanced Education - Mount Helen. The Library started on the ground floor in 1970. In 1971 a contract for a four-storey library was drawn up and construction began the same year. The building opened in 1973, occupying two stories of the current building. The library grew and with Commonwealth Grants was able to develop its collection. In 1987 the library achieved an annual budget of over $1 million. The Teachers Resource Collection was added and by 1989 the library expected to occupy the top three floors plus the lower ground floor. A flexible study area on the top floor was introduced 1990-1991. 2010 saw the completion of a new stage in the history of the library. It now includes new study and research areas including the Geoffrey Blainey Research Centre with access to the University's Art and Historical Collection. The E. J. Barker Library is named after a former Principal of the School of Mines Ballarat who then became the first Director of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education, now Federation University. Jack Barker played an active part in education and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia. Colin A Goldberg b 13 November 1932 - D 2February 2013. Colin attended several primary schools in Victoria leaving school aged 13 years. Working hard at various jobs Colin studied at RMIT qualifying as builder /carpenter in 1961. Colin was called up for National Service on 30 July, 1951. He was allotted to the RAAF, and underwent recruit training at Laverton. From there he went to the ground and air radio school in Ballarat. After his training Colin was placed in the RAAF reserve. Colin was on the list for Korea for 9 years although did not serve. Colin said of his training: "My National Service Training showed me purpose & a discipline that turned my life somewhat around for the good & for all time". Colin first joined the family of R S L at WARRAGUL in 1992 transferring to Lara in 1996. Elizabeth, Colin's wife, says that he was probably working with members of the RSL and that talk at work about the branch made him think that it was a good place to connect and make friends, and this was part of the reason why they continued at Lara. Colin. And wife Elizabeth came to live in Lara in 1994 there being a warm welcome for us both by the members of Lara RSL in 1996. Colin & Elizabeth found friendship & a whole wide window to the consequence of warfare. Indeed history written through the suffering of so many . Colin & Elizabeth were married for 57 years when Colin died. Colin and Elizabeth had two daughters, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren however he never met them. This book was donated by Principal R E Thwaites to the Ballarat College Library, possibly during his years of tenure (1933-45). Fascinatingly the book contains the signiature of a previous principal Ernest Neville Marryat (tenure 1910-1912). Until 2014 when this book was catalogued to the Victorian Collections database the first names of Principal Marryat had never been known by the school. The discovery of his presumed personal signature has added significantly to the school's written history. Badge made to promote fete held at Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College in 1922. According to the school history 'The lamp burns brightly' a special committee of the school ouncil were appointed to organise a great fete in August 1922 to raise money towards the purchase of new property in Webster/Mair Streets. "The Oriental Fair transformed the Ballarat City Hall for three consecutive days. Stalls of many types were heavily laded, and, as one reveller commented, 'The perpetual motion of the fairty floss machine, producing its quaint confection, was an object of interest and wonderment to many, and the crack of the pea rifle in the adjoining shooting gallery almost dispersed the feathery flakes of fairy floss as they issued from the magic machine'. An arochestra provided continuous music, varied at times by vocal solos, eurythmic displays and other enterainments. the fair raised the remarkable sum of 1,576 pounds." The Clarendon Old Collegians Association existed from very early times in the school history and was a singificant controbutor to school socail capacity and infrastructure. The OC's regularly donated funds and purchases to special projects. Sections of the society met in different geographic areas, such as Melbourne or the Wimmera. David Sydney Wanliss entered Ballarat College in 1872, passing his matriculation at the age of thirteen, before studying Law at Trinity College Cambridge. School book prizes awarded to Harold Oscar Nevett (1902). Harold Oscar was born in Ballarat 3rd January 1885, the son of Oscar Horatio Arthur and Elizabeth (Dowling) Nevett. He entered Ballarat College 1894 after attending Ellerslie College III Class. Harold Oscar was Dux of the College in 1900. He went on the study Law at the University of Melbourne. He enlisted in England on 14th December 1915 and was awarded the Military Cross at Messines Ridge on 7 June 1917. After demobilisation in May 1919 he married Evelyn Kitson on 25 October in England. Harold Oscar died on 11 June 1940. Harold's brothers Arthur Hereword, Horace William and Ralph Dowling all attended Ballarat College also.
