On 7 March 1964 the Former Ballarat Gaol was opened to the public resulting in a large turnout. This building was demolished in 1975 when the extension to the existing Shire Offices were completed later in 1975.Prior to the Sunbury Waterworks Rust occupying this building, a hotel was built on this site in the 1870s and was known as Brown's Hotel.
