Laurie Sullivan lived in Hepburn Springs, except for service during World War Two. He was captured in Crete and aa prisoner of war under the German Army. A Stalwart of the Hepburn Football Club, the football ground was named in his honour. The monument commemorates those from Avoca who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. It was dedicated on18 November 1921. The memorial was later rededicated in 1988 to also remember those who served in the Second World War. During the First World War, 137 men from the Avoca area volunteered for the armed services and of this number 29 were killed. A plaque, unveiled in 1984, commemorates Sergeant Lewis McGee V.C who enlisted from Avoca in World War One. Colour photograph of the Avoca World War One. Arthur LINDSAY (1912-1990) Born Melbourne Arthur Lindsay, a relative of the Lindsays of Creswick, studied informally under Rupert Bunny, and John Munro in 1933, and held his first Exhibition in 1938, with Peter Cox, at Riddell Galleries. In 1939, he left Australia to tour Japan, but stayed on, accepting a position with a publishing company in Hong Kong. He served with the Hong Kong Medical Corp during World War Two and was interned at Pootung Camp, Shanghai, from 1941 – 45. He held an exhibition of his internment paintings in Melbourne in 1946. Lindsay returned to Hong Kong after the War, and supervised an Advertising Agency in Singapore, Kuala Lumpar, and Bangkok. In the 1950’s he travelled to Europe, United Kingdom, Spain and France. Returning to Australia Lindsay moved to Castlemaine in 1969. WWII HeritageFrom Australian War Memorial: Standard issue blocked brown leather rifle bucket for attachment to the Pattern 1912 UP saddle. Bucket is complete with a leather slide steadying fitting, half way down the bucket, to attach it to the surcingle of the saddle, and a leather strap with brass buckle at the top of the bucket which attaches it to the saddle tree.Strap only is stamped with a broad arrow and manufacturer's details 'BLACKMAN LEATHER GOODS LTD. 175 BERMONDSEY ST S.E.1 1940'.
