Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. Bairnsdale Campus" The Orbost Education Centre has been in operation since 1976 and is run by a team of volunteers and paid staff. Programs and activities offered respond to the needs of the local community and the centre works closely with its community partners. It is supported by funding and goodwill from the community, state government and non-government organisations. Stathi Raftopoulos is pictured at his home cinema at his residence in Sylvander Street North Balwyn. In 1949 Stathi Raftopoulos imported the first Greek film into Australia, entitled 'Voice of the Heart'. It was screened at Nicholas Hall in Lonsdale Street. Stathis went on to become a travelling picture show man showing Greek films to the Greeks in regional centres around Australia. He later established a film distribution and exhibition company, The Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures, in partnership with Mr Panayioti (Peter) Giannoudis. With the advent of television in the 1950, former suburban picture theatres were being closed down. This veterinary equipment was found in an old walk-through dairy at Wombat Track. The instruments have been identified by Vet, Peter Honey,(9.1.2019) as instruments used to gain access to a teat cavity in a cow and to remove a blockage in the teat. They are possibly an improvised tool used c 1900-1950's.These items are representative of items used in Orbost on dairy farms in the first half of 20th century.A small set of instruments and container made of metal -possibly stainless steel. Anthi Chilianis is standing outside the fruit shop 'South Melbourne Fruit Palace' which her husband, George along with Panayioti (Peter) and Theofilos Kouvalias opened at 288 Clarendon Street, South Melbourne in the 1930s. The photograph was taken in 1994 and surprisingly the shop's signage and façade had not changed. ON Behalf of the Maldon Hospital, Nursing Director Katrina Sprrow and resident Ruby were please last week to accept two donations - a total of $1000 - from the Masons. Southern Cross Lodge Master Peter Thompson presented a cheque for $400 which will be used to buy an ice machine for the Hospital. This was welcome news to Ruby, who enjoys a few blocks of ice in her drinks. Peter was joined at the presentation by fellow masons Ray Lindstrom and Art Lynch. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community The first railway union in the world was created in Melbourne in 1861 when twenty locomotive drivers banded together to form the Locomotive Engine Drivers Association of Victoria. The forerunner to the A.F.U.L.E., the Association continues today and is the oldest continuous railway union in the world.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria.
