These items are from the Temple estate. George Temple (1832-1916) started Temple's store opposite Orbost Post Office. Packed stores to Bendoc area gold fields, also had a store in Cann River. This item is an example of a popular piece of jewelry worn by women in the early 20th century. These brooches were sold in a local store and could have been purchased for a local funeral.Black, bakelite brooch - three small sections form centre of brooch, one is a hexagonal cone-shape with hexagonal dome attached by link to smaller circular polygon attached by link to a smaller flat pentagon. Black mesh in the shape of wings form the backing featuring eight bakelite stars of varying sizes (two smaller stars missing from the assembly). Are believed to have been worn by a jockey riding horses inthe Orbost district. They were found stored inside a leather valise with other "horse" items which are also believed to have been owned by the jockey.Horses played a vital role in the history of Orbost both in agriculture and horse racing.This item is connected to that role.Two pairs of spurs. This seminar was organized by a committee as part of Victoria's 150th anniversary celebrations. It was published by the Dept. of Agriculture for East Gippsland Primary Industry Committee in 1985. Victoria's 150th anniversary was celebrated in 1984-1985. A 136 pp book with a black spine and a white cover. On the cover in black print is a logo created for the sesquicentenary of Melbourne and Victoria. Underneath the logo is VICTORIA 150 and Growing Together 1984-85. The book contains the records of the seminar, "Farming in East Gippsland - Past, Present and Future". At the bottom of this page is "Bairnsdale May 1 1985. This box was crafted from a portion of one of the original oak trees in the Jarrahmond WW11 Avenue of Honour.The Avenue was planted in 1955 and linked the farms of the two servicemen from Jarrahmond who lost their lives in WWII. It consisted of English Oaks interspersed with flowering peaches and cherries. Wood for the box was collected in the early 1990's by Stan Weatherall following a windstorm. Stan had the timber rough-sawn into planks by local sawmiller Max Reynolds. The timber was stored for a number of years before being given to Don McLean.A hand-made oak box. The inside base is lined in green felt. The lid is single hinged. the front panel displays a radiating pattern in the grain of the oak wood that resembles the rising sun badge of the Australian Defence Forces. Two brass pins are symbols of Australian military regalia. Inside the box is an envelope with information and letters on the manufacture of the box and presentation to Orbost. This cup has come from the Ozone Hotel, Warrnambool. The Ozone Hotel building was opened in 1890 as the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace (a temperance hotel) and was at the corner of Koroit and Kepler Streets in Warrnambool. It was built by a company of local businessmen and leased out. In 1891 the Coffee Palace was granted a wine licence. In 1895 Thomas Randall was the proprietor of the building and it was renamed the Ozone Hotel. The building was closed in 1915 and re-opened in 1920 as the Hotel Mansions. In 1923 the Hotel Mansions became a fully- licensed hotel. In 1929 it was destroyed by fire and the present-day Hotel Warrnambool was built on the site.This cup, although damaged, is of considerable importance as it is one of the few surviving objects from the Ozone Hotel. The Grand Ozone Coffee Palace/Ozone Hotel/Hotel Mansions was the grandest building ever erected in Warrnambool and its destruction by fire was a major loss to the city. This is a white china cup with a dark red band around the cup near the top and a scroll with the name of the hotel in the same colouring. The handle is completely broken off. Carnival (Dutch: Carnaval) is an important annual event heralding Lent in the southern provinces of The Netherlands, with each village often having its own "Carnavalsclub" and traditions. Many Dutch immigrantsg from the southern provinces have continued this tradition and formed their regional Carnavals Clubs in Australia. Each club has its own colourful uniforms, including specific hats. There are potentially three types of hats: A formal hat for official events, a work hat for use during normal club nights and for those members lucky enough to be chosen for a year as the "Prince" of the club, a Prince's Hat. Dutch Carnival is primarily a festival celebrating human folly which is why the hats are like jesters' caps. "Carnaval" comes with a rich tradition of ridiculing people and institutions of authority, and so, for instance, the "Prince" is saluted with military salutes which are performed the wrong way round, to the great merriment of onlookers. Special songs celebrating the foolishness of people in high places, such as politicians, are composed each year for "Carnaval".
