Twin Telescopes - "Lemair Paris" - believed to be owned by Charles Grayden c 1870's. Traded to english settlers for cannon balls used as ballast in his boat he rowed passengers across the Eastern Passage. He may have had the first water taxi license in Victoria.283-01 and 02. The boys came across from Stony Point and planted trees and were plagued by mosquitoes. The poem is quite humorous describing their venture to Cowes. They decided that Cowes derived its name - "The mosquitoes were cows down at Cowes." On the back of the folder is a note from E Murnane, one of the Supervisors, to "Dear John". The poem is most likely written by E Murnane too as it has the initials (E.M.) at the end. The Souvenir Folder was donated by Neil Lacco.A souvenir folder with two photographs included of the First School Boys' Camp at Cowes run by the Education Department. The souvenir also includes a poem called "How Cowes Got Its Name" and a list of the participants. Photograph on the front shows three boys with a koala. The article tells of Bert West's discovery of the Little (Fairy) Penguin in his youth and with his two friends, Herbert Denham and Albert Watchorn, decided to introduce the penguins to the public. Visitors would be taken by hire car to Summerlands Beach to view the penguins coming in at dusk. At that time people would sit on the sand amongst the penguins as they waddled up the beach. Of course nowadays a large Centre caters for 3 to 4000 visitors during the summertime and also during the rest of the year. A new building is to be erected in 2017/18 in order to move further back from the nesting sites. The first church services were held at the McHaffie home in Ventnor once a fornight, the Preacher coming over in a whaleboat from the mainland. Land was reserved for the Church in 1869 and the first services were held in the new church in 1870. The Parish Hall was built in 1935. The original sketch drawn by Ivan Dinsdale, won first prize in the "little treasures" exhibition. Captain Grossard was accidentally shot in 1868. The date of 1798 on the sketch may be from Bass's Whaleboat journey in 1797?.
