The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Retirement send off for Jack Coughlan. This collection of 23 photos was most likely taken in Lithographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, in 1988. In photos .1P and .2P the technician is preparing a Chromalin map proof for supporting information that would be printed on the reverse side of a topographic map. This map was commonly referred to as a ‘snack’ map, with photos of edible indigenous plants and descriptions endemic to that region printed on the reverse side to assist soldiers living off the land in survival situations. The authoritative information was provided by Major Leslie James (Les) Hiddins aka ‘the Bush Tucker Man’ He is a retired Australian Army soldier and war veteran, who is best known for his love and knowledge of the Australian bush. See item 6190.6P for more information on the Chomalin proof production process. In the remaining photos, Print Troop’s technicians were most likely operating the Komoni, Planeta or Ultra-MAN-III offset printing presses, as well as working in the map despatch dock. Although these photos are not annotated most personnel are positively identified. Reverend Alexander Morton was the Presbyterian minister in Orbost between 1894 and 1904. Rev. Alexander Morton earned great respect from the Orbost community, during his ministry here between 1894-1904. He brought with him from the New Hebrides timber which was used for the pulpit. Affectionately known as “Sandy” Morton, he was very friendly and endeavoured to reach all his bush parishioners, often on horseback. He was known up the Gelantipy Valley as an itinerant Preacher with a difference, he often doubled as a dentist, who was quite adept at pulling teeth, often with a pair of pliers. These circular letters have been sent by the Secretary of the Warrnambool Club to committee members of the club in the 1870s and 80s. The Warrnambool Club, a club for men of some standing in the community, was established in the early 1870s and initially had rooms in the Warrnambool Club Hotel which was opened by John Amon Smith in January 1874. This hotel was in Kepler Street between Timor and Koroit Streets. By 1876 membership of the Warrnambool Club had grown to over 70 and the Warrnambool Club Hotel rooms were deemed to be too small. So the Warrnambool Club erected a new building in 1877 in Kepler Street. Today the Warrnambool Club operates today from the same building. These items are of historical significance because they are original 19th century documents associated with the Warrnambool Club, an important institution in Warrnambool for over 140 years. These are five sheets of paper folded to make four pages for each sheet. They date from the 1870s and 80s and are circular letters sent to committee members of the Warrnambool Club regarding forthcoming meetings. The letters are printed with handwritten material in the spaces of the first four items for the dates, signature of the Secretary and the business of the meeting. The handwriting is in black ink. In 1973 it was decided too much money would have to be spent to restore Grampian House Guest House to its original glory after a clearing auction it was demolished by Bawalda Bros. from Horsham. The property was sold to Mr Gary West of Stawell and Mr Lyle Jamieson of Ararat who proposed to build a Tavern-bistro Conference Centre. This did not proceed and the property was auctioned on 14th July 1984 but was passed in a auction. It was later sold to a syndicate of Halls Gap businessmen, Mr. Keith Smith, Mr. John Ingram and Mr Arthur Mangle. Orbost Bowling Club was founded in 1929 and still operates in Orbost today. The Bowling Club was founded by a group of farmers and businessmen. They set about providing a sporting icon for the town. Six rinks were constructed on the current site using horse drawn scoops and drags. The "Back to Orbost” 1937 book, describes the greens as "a bit rough for the first two seasons but now compare favourably with most country greens". Funds for the construction were raised by the issue of debentures at £5 each, and subscriptions were £1/1s/0d ($2.10). (info. Margaret Smith) This menu suggests that dinners for members were held regularly - at least annually and were fairly formal events. This item represents an era when formal dinners were important as a community event. Very historical significance. Robert was part of a group of 500 Servicemen captured as P.O.Ws.at Padang Sumatra. The POWs were accommodated in 6 long barracks buildings that ran side by side. They were behind an 8 foot high wall containing a parade ground, sports ground, Japanese Officers and guards quarters. The POWs were put to work on the infamous Sumatra Railway. There are 3 tracks; the third track was built in 1971, which gives an approximate date for the photo. At this time the original station buildings were demolished and replaced by buildings constructed from concrete bricks and a second subway replaced the overhead footbridge. According to Roderick Smith, a local railway enthusiast, originally there had been 3 railway houses at the Mont Albert end of the northern car park. These were demolished to extend the car park. Certainly 8 Bedford Avenue, built as the station master's house was demolished at this time. The palm tree had been planted in the station master's front garden and was retained in a small garden bed within the car park. Skein holder is from c1890-1900 and used by four generations of the donor's family who lived around Woori Yallock and Yellingbo. Donor's family descended from settler John Douthie (1831-1897), his son Andrew Douthie married Jessie Sands Smith (1875 - 1948). Item believed to have been owned by Jessie who passed it on to her fourth child, Mary, who passed it to her child Lillian who passed it to her daughter Leanne, the donor. No makers mark on item. Mary worked as a teacher and sewing mistress at Woori Yallock Primary School and used the item in her personal time to make clothing for the family.An umbrella-style wooden skein holder with a metal clamp at the base to allow it to attach to a table or similar. When not in use, item is small and compact, however once unfolded the arms extend out in an umbrella shape with thin timber rods bound together with leather ties.
