Pan, Berdan
A Berdan pan was a grinding pan. The circular pan was set at an angle, and as the pan revolved, a heavy iron ball rotated in the lowest point, grinding sand or mineral to a fine powder. It was frequently used to grind impurities out of amalgam (gold in mercury), and to grind batch-lots of heavy mineral. It is also known as a ball mill. Two strong wooden A frames supporting large iron pivotable bowl with a large iron ball inside the bowl. There are cogs underneath bowl which are connected to rotating belts extending from main battery shaft. The chute attached below the bowl is directed into a circular metal container. The frame is painted green. -

Book, Harcourt Speaks, 2009
'Harcourt Speaks' represents the collaboration of a group of local orchardists, farmers, growers and local community who worked together to gather photos and stories of strength, cohesion and innovation around the impact of relentless drought and changing climatic conditions. This was a drought assistance project supported by the Mount Alexander Shire Council and the Victorian Government Dept of Community Planning and Development.Project Facilitator was Phillippa Gregory and Photography Community Development was provided by Deanna Neville.Provides a cross-section of the working adults of a rural community as they faced the grim reality of extended drought with attendant restrictions on the use of irrigation water and the consequent near disastrous impact on horticulture in this famed horticultural valley. Each photo has a brief story attached. The captions tell how this community responded by acceptance and innovation, using words like "we adapted' 'we were innovative' 'new directions chosen' 'resilience' 'optimistic'.This project is significant in that it depicts a community that, faced with real adversity, was not weakly submissive, nor crushed, but made the best of it.It has significance as an example of a creative response to a prolonged negative situationSixteen page, spiral bound, A4 'landscape'book with coloured title page, with 31 coloured photographs.Harcourt Speaks -

In 1983, three were leased to V/Line to haul services on the standard gauge Melbourne to Albury line, sometimes extending through to Sydney.A class (January 1984) were initially used for "Intercity" passenger services within Victoria. In this service, they operated at speeds up towards 125 km/h. Later, they were also used for freight services.N class (September 1985) produced by Clyde Engineering and entered service in 1985 and still operating in 2023. 422 Class diesel-electric locomotives (August 1983), designed by Clyde Engineering were introduced in January 1969. Following crew training, the engines entered service on the Main Southern line between Sydney and Albury and the Illawarra line from Sydney to Port Kembla and Moss Vale. Among the passenger services they hauled were the Southern Aurora and the Spirit of Progress. From 1982, they began to operate through to Melbourne. Album - Photographs - Comeng Dandenong, 1980s - 1990s
In March 2024, Milissa Box (DTP) was at a trash and treasure market. She'd found a $5 photo album for sale with some photos that she thought might be of interest… From what I can gather it belonged to the gentleman pictured who was a worker at Dandenong in the Comeng and ABB eras. He appears to have worked on the Z3, A1/A2, B1/B2 class trams, Hong Kong LRVs, Comeng Melbourne suburban trains, and later the extra Victorian-purchased XP power cars and XAM sleepers to enable the Riverina XPT to be extended to Melbourne. It's clear he was very proud of the vehicles he'd helped to build. I have scanned a selection of the images, which appear to be a mix of official builder's portraits, team photos, and self-taken shots showing candid everyday scenes on the shop floor. There are also images of the launch of the XP power cars with then-Victorian Premier Joan Kirner; and some personal visits to see the Flying Scotsman, Victorian Goldfields Railway, Coal Creek, etc. Filename Description Date Comeng Scans 2024-03-05 0001 Three Comeng workers (including the photographer) stand in front of Comeng suburban train 697M (Chopper unit) c.
