John Barnaby was born in 1867 near Rosebud, Victoria. In 1885 he came to Melbourne and started working as a teacher at Caulfield Grammar School. In 1894 John Barnaby entered the Theological Hall at Ormond college. He graduated B.A. in 1895 and finished his theological studies in 1896. He was ordained in 1898 and called to Kew Presbyterian Church. In 1903 he took his M.A. degree. In 1912 he left Kew and was appointed Neil Walter Black Lecturer at Ormond College Theological Hall. In 1978 a new campus for Williamstown Grammar, named Westbourne, was established at Truganina to accommodate the new secondary school. The first year 12 class graduated in 1983 and to commemorate this historic event, the Year 12 art and signature book was begun. Since 1983, each Year 12 group has nominated a student to create an artwork, which in many cases represents a theme that was important to the Year 12 cohort at the time, to be signed by each student of Year 12. The practice quickly became to create the artwork on a separate sheet of paper and paste it across the fold of each consecutive double page spread. The book, opened at the entry of the graduating class, would then be displayed at the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner each year.This books commemorates each graduating year 12 class since the establishment of the secondary campus at Truganina. It is an example of beginning community building traditions for the new school.Red vinyl bound book with tan-coloured suede corners and spine. The front cover features gold embossed lettering of the school name above a school logo (self-adhesive applied after manufacture) with further embossed gold lettering 'Year 12' below. Large platform scales such as these ones made by W. & T. Avery were used for weighing goods for trading and passengers' luggage. They would be used in places such as railway stations, shipping ports, customs offices and ticketing offices. Often fees would be charged to customers according to the weight of their goods and luggage. Items would be placed onto the large horizontal platform then weights would be added to the weighing bar until the bar leveled to being horizontal. The weights would be added together and the total of the weights would be used for the final figure. These scales were made in Birmingham, England, by the British company, W and T Avery. The company had its origins in the early 1700s but only became known as W and T Avery when the brothers William and Thomas Avery inherited the scale-making business from a relative, Joseph Balden, on his death in 1813. By 1885 they had three factories and In 1895, the company acquired James Watt & Co and two years later had moved to the 25-acre Soho Foundry site in Smethwick, Birmingham where James Watt had manufactured steam engines. When the last Avery family member died in 1918, the company employed over 3,000 people and had businesses all over the world. Following the highly successful introduction of the first digital retail scale in 1971, the company was taken over by the GEC Group in 1979. The business was subsequently acquired by the American company, Weigh-Tronix, in 2000 which had already acquired a competitor, Salter. The Avery name continues today in the company known as Avery Weigh-Tronix.An item that was used at the turn of the century as train platform scales or for weighing agricultural products. Made by a company that pioneered weighing equipment with offices all over the world. With many examples of this scale in museums throughout the world. Platform scales with wheels. Grace Brebner graduated in 1942 and was the first police woman to attend Detective Training School. She began at the Criminal Investigation Branch in 1951 often taking on undercover shifts at a factory to investigate illegal gambling. Rev. James Harcourt (1866-1938) was the son of Rev John Harcourt. He was the first student of Queen's College to graduate at the University of Melbourne. He was a chaplain of Wesley College and a tutor at Queens College for six years. In 1909 he became Minister of Glendearg Grove Church in Malvern. Brown leather and gilt the inside is lined with watered silk on the left and a richly illuminated text on the right. The top has images of two churches and the borders are decorated with blue, yellow and red flowers. William Fleming Hopkins was born in the Maryborough District in 1864. He graduated from Adelaide University, B.A.. Returning to Victoria he did three years of teaching at Portland and Scotch College. Admitted to Melbourne University, graduating M.B. and B.S. in 1891 and secured the appointment of Medical Officer and Manager of the Stawell Hospital. Doctor Hopkins joined the Victorian Rangers Medical Staff in 1892 with the rank of Captain. He served with them until his appointment as Medical Officer to the First Victorian Contingent under the command of Captain McLeish. Captain Hopkins exhibited courage and coolness under heavy fire attending to the wounded at Rensburg. He graduated from the Ithacan Naval Secondary College in the school year 1912 -1913 and studied at in (Constantinople) Istanbul. Glen Jones was born in Bendigo on September 10, 1934. He graduated from Bendigo High School in 1951 and then attended Bendigo Teachers' College. He began his teaching career as an Art, Craft and Woodwork teacher in Rochester in 1955. This is a copy of a photograph of Dr Ian 'Spud' MacLeod Murphy c1920s. Dr Murphy graduated from Melbourne College with a Medical Degree. Dr Murphy served as a navy surgeon during World War 2 and was involved with the Rats of Tobruk and the evacuation of Crete. Dr Murphy went on to become Emerald's first GP.Dr Murphy was Emerald's first and much-loved GP. His work for the community over 34 years was of immense benefit.
