Books - SECV Annual Reports 1920-1948
28 books - SECV Annual Report covering the financial year with Appendices from March 1919 to June 1920 to year ending June 1948. Presented to Parliament pursuant to section 35 (b). The Victorian government owned the electrical company in Victoria supplying electricity for lighting of public buildings, street lighting and electrical trams. Brown coal was the main source of supply. The SECV commenced on 10th January 1921 having earlier been known as the Electricity Commissioners in 1919-1921. The SEC was privatised in the 1990s. The Kiewa Scheme was approved in 1937 but its start was delayed due to WWII. The reports include references to Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme early on. The papers are a primary source as they were presented to Parliament as true documents and hence valuable for research.Foolscap pages held togeether by 2 or 3 staples at the spine.The cardboard cover is a blue grey with printed black title. Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, prior to 29 June 1968, about the forthcoming trip by the Tramways Museum Society (TMSV) to ride on tram No. 27 when it records its millionth mile on the Ballarat Tramway system at 3.10pm on 29/6/1968. Was attached on donation to item 1847, with a pin in top left hand corner. Separated for storage. See image file for arrangement on donation. Note: Later review by D. Macartney in early 80's found that the SEC had miscalculated the distance travelled by 100,000 miles. The million miles occurred during service with the BTPS - written up somewhere in Fares Please! Details the history of the Ballarat system, take over by the SEC and the conditions of that take over by the SEC, reconstruction, financial losses incurred by the SEC, decline in passengers, its suitability, condition of the infrastructure and rolling stock. Its unsuitability to extend, effectiveness of the Geelong conversion, ability of private bus operators, tramway employees, methods of abandonment, tram tracks, overhead and impact on the electricity supply system. Dated 2/4/1968. Has a table showing the income and losses and population from 1935 to 1967, a coloured graphical presentation of tramway statistics, sheet of Fares and Charges for Ballarat. Attached to the rear of the document was an advertisement for Ballarat Tramways fare sections (See Reg Item 8039) and a map showing tram and bus services - drawing No. VX4/1/1. Manuscript titled "A brief history of the Tramways of Bendigo", prepared by Keith Kings during 1965 based on the text in the last paragraph. Was to be a joint effort with Wal Jack, notes Wal's death in 1964. Provides a short history of Bendigo, the construction and operation of the battery and steam tram system, the take over and construction of the electric tramways by the Electric Supply Co. of Victoria. Includes the takeover by the SEC, replacement tramcars, the North Bendigo extension, exchange of cars with Ballarat, Geelong, attempts to close the system and operations during the mid 1960s. The material in this manuscript would have formed by the basis of a booklet published by the ARHS/TMSV at the time of the closure of the SEC operated tramways in 1971.Yields information about the history of Bendigo Tramways written in 1965. The 1st Kew Scouts was one of the first Scout Troops in Victoria, being formed in 1909. From 1927 they met in a magnificent Scout Hall in Disraeli Street, Kew until it was demolished in 1993. Still operating (in 2020) from their new Scout Hall on the corner of Kilby Road and Kellett Grove, Kew.A Scout Troop is divided into smaller teams called ‘patrols’. At this time the Scout in charge of a patrol was called a patrol leader (‘PL’) and his assistant a ‘second’ (‘Sec’). Each patrol of boys would chose a patrol name, often an Australian animal or bird. Other 1st Kew patrols called themselves the Kookaburra Patrol, the Kangaroo Patrol and so forth. The shield the Emu patrol is proudly displaying is possibly the trophy for being the ‘Champion Victorian Patrol’. Letter - Gertrude Perry Collection - handwritten letter from Bendigo YMCA congratulating Miss Perry on being chosen to represent Mitchell Street for the 1941 Miss Popular Girl Competition for the Bendigo Easter Fair
Gertrude Perry was born in California Gully in 1917. Her singing skills were recognized at an early age. She later sang with local choirs and sang on radio. She was involved with the Bendigo Operatic Society for many years. Gertrude began her working life in sales. After studying book keeping she worked at the Bendigo Ordnance Factory during WW2 and then worked for local solicitors and accountants. Bob Hymans Collection Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This letter is significant because it documents the procedures followed by the Management Committee to develop services in Falls Creek.A letter to Bob Hymans from the Management Committee dated the 9th February 1961. It is informing him that the SEC has not received an application from Mr Hymans for connection of electricity supply to his lodge or other installations at Falls Creek. It states that supply cannot be guaranteed for the winter if applications were not received before 13th March, 1961. Was Bendigo 1 and swapped for two single truckers during 1960.
