In the early 1980s, the CBD of Sunbury bounded by Evans, Brook, O'Shanassy and Station Streets underwent major redevelopment. As Sunbury grew from a country town to an outer suburb the town centre and shopping centre expanded along Evans and O'Shanassy Streets. The Victorian cottage on the LHS of the photograph has been demolished and a KFC complex has been built in its place.A coloured photograph of Evans Street looking south with one of the remaining Victorian cottages on the LHS and angle parking areas along the curbside. Copied from a glass negative; original photo taken by Ian Barkla's father, Frank Leslie Barkla of 37 Grovedale Road. He was a keen amateur photographer and member of the Melbourne Camera Club. There is also a copy by Ken Hall. Date is approximate. The shops between Croydon and Guildford Road were built at the end of the 1920s and occupied immediately. Next north of Whitty's was H Wichell (bootmaker at 146), J T Poynton (butcher at 148), Mrs A Wardell (confectioner at 150), R J Skinner (grocer at 152), W Ives (fruit and vegetables at 154) and W R Latchford (hardware at 156). Has space for the Electrical Shop, Air shop, Body Shop, Truck shop, and Paint shop. Form used to advise that works car 19 had a loose tyre 2C, advised by South Melbourne Depot 3-12-1970. Tram 19W. Electrical shop cleaned and checked both controllers with dates of test, air shop - air and sand ok, and truck shop put notes in as well, not sure what they mean, though the axle is 33" by Thomson's & Co and it was fitted with GE 241 motors. Percival White was a blacksmith who set up shop in South Road, Moorabbin. The advertising on the front of the shop indicates he also made and repaired buggies, wagons, etc.Percival White opened his blacksmith shop in 1853. This handmade basket is typical of baskets used for domestic purposes for many years in the early to mid 20th century. It was produced in Australia by Graf's. Wicker baskets were popular at this time as they were light but durable. They were made in a wide range of shapes and sizes, including laundry baskets, storage items in the home, in shops and by travelling hawkers. Wicker was also a common material used for furniture. Vintage baskets by Graf's are still in demand by collectors. Franz and Anneliese Graf arrived in Australia about 1960 and spent time at the Bonegilla Migrant Camp where one of their sons Arnold was born. They moved to Melbourne and began Graf’s basket making business soon after. The basket in our Collection brings the Graf story full circle back to its Australian roots.This item is significant as it is representative of basketry items popular throughout Australia in the 1960s. This basket was hand-made in Australia and used by a resident of the Wodonga District.A woven cane shopping basket with a wooden base and single bamboo handle.
