One of them carried gold from the Ovens diggings to Sydney. In 1852, the South Australian government established a gold escort service between Mount Alexander and Adelaide. Why? Slide: On the more important goldfields, as the number of diggers grew, the Commissioners' establishments were increased, and permanent buildings were erected at their headquarters. The group of tents and buildings forming a Commissioner's headquarters became known as the Government Camp. The Camp included the office of the Commissioner, the licence office, the escort office, the lock-up, staff quarters, and the barracks of the police and any soldiers attached to the Camp. Besides the prevention of crime and the arrest of wrongdoers, it was their duty to move about the diggings, seeing that every digger was in possession of a current gold licence. Slide reads; Working from very imperfect records, all we can say is that, from 1851 to 1858, while new fields were being discovered, and much gold was to be obtained by primitive methods, the number of independent digger grew rapidly (though in the latter years of this period the average earnings per digger was falling rapidly).
