The 'Alexandra Bros' London Café at 25 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne (close to Flinders Street Station) was owned by brothers John and George Alexandratos (Alexander) who migrated to Australia from the village of Frikes in Ithaca, Greece in the early years of the twentieth century. As well as selling fruit and confectionery, afternoon teas were served and wedding parties were catered for. The London Café became one of Melbourne's fashionable cafes at the time. George and John Alexandratos were founding members of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society which was formed in October 1916.Many Greeks who migrated from Ithaca during the first half of the twentieth century and settled in Melbourne opened cafes in the city. The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories. Golda Whelan, a designer with Hartnell of Melbourne designed this wedding dress for her daughter Liane Whelan. Liane married John Merry at St John's Anglican Church in Toorak in 1969.The dress was manufactured in the 'house' of Hartnell of Melbourne, a leading Melbourne Fashion House in the 1950s and the 1960s.White slim line lace wedding dress, featuring eleven self-covered buttons down centre back Off centre rear opening done up by metal press studs. Wedding/bridal horse-shoe(s) and associated Kewpie doll and branch of buds/leaves. Doll - Probably celluloid with jointed (shoulder only) arms and attached satin supporting band with a single branch of buds/leaves; Horse-shoe #1 - (cardboard?) shaped horse-shoe covered with narrow ribbon; edges of shoe have imitation pearls (some missing); supportive ribbon attached to either side of shoe; Horse-shoe #2 - slightly padded and covered horseshoe with attached 'sprig' of buds and leaves; attached to one end of horse-shoe is a triangular material 'emblem' with black border, and gold 'bar' on a central white background; Buckle made of mother-of-pearl; small length of narrow ribbon; four separate pieces of 'twigs' with buds and pearls attached. This wedding dress was worn by Marjorie Don who married Algernon Garlick, 1928Cream coloured crepe-de-chine wedding dress with a dropped waist comprised of a wide band of ribbon. The bodice is gathered at the top in narrow bands. Rows of pearl buttons extend to the waist from the neckline. Maree and Marcus of 63 Station Street married after several years of living together. As she is a fashion designer, she designed and made all costumes; as he is a musician, some of his friends played jazz and rock for the procession to the Port Melbourne Yacht Club for the ceremony. Only three neighbours (including photographer) were invited to accompany the procession. The armholes and neckline are edged with the salmon silk. 2. The elbow-length sleeved coat has a gathered neckline edged with salmon pink Rouleau and tied at the opening (which does not have any fastenings).
