The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically and socially significant to the development of Kew. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. Although probably built some time earlier, the first mention in the Rate Books of the property later known as 'Wimba Lodge' appears in the entry for 1870 when the property, owned by John Sharpe Denbigh, a civil servant, was given an N.A.V. of £72. Denbigh did however occupy a house in Cotham Road in 1863, and it is possible that was the same premises'. The house was occupied by Sharp until at least May 1876 when the 'family residence ... was auctioned' to Carlington George Edmund Marston, a chemist of Smith Street, Collingwood. At the time of the auction the house was described thus: The residence and grounds of the late J.S. Dendigh, situate in the most elevated part of Cotham Road Kew. The grounds comprise an area of 4a Or 29p or thereabouts, and have a frontage to Cotham-road of 4 chains. The house has two large rooms in front, with 6ft hall built of brick, bay and side windows (plate glass), four rooms of wood behind with slate roofs, bathroom and closets, detached kitchen and servant's room, large shed with washing boiler, pantry and cellar under, brick and cement tank, and the Yan Yean laid onto house and grounds, cowshed, pigstye, &c, the whole securely fenced. First class orchard and flower garden. The paddocks laid with English grasses and drained... .' (Sanderson P. Kew Conservation Study Vol 2)'Wimba' is a single storeyed rendered house. The front entrance is flanked by two polygonal bay windows, and a verandah with a concave corrugated iron roof returns around three facades, and accentuates the projections of the windows. Part or panel that fitted over the end saloon window - fitted with hinges to allow access to the saloon door slide mechanism. Internal part of this part has a light colour finish on the rear. Set of three photographs originally used in item 4212, that suffered significant water damage. Each of a part of the length of tram W2 439 painted by Stewart Merritt, showing the tram along its length. Each photograph along the length of the tram individually presented, but not necessarily lining up. The images show the nature of the damage. Was originally from framed with a wood half round section, painted brown, glazed, with non-acid free cardboard surround and paper backing but has suffered extensive water damage both to the cardboard and the individual photographs themselves. The photographs were in a deteriorated condition. The item was unglazed at the time of the donation. Black and white photographs of the construction of the junction at Gertrude and Nicholson St c1955. On the right hand side of the photograph are two buses showing the Destination of Northcote. The former cable tram track in Nicholson St is yet to be removed - shows the offset between the tracks and the wood blocks. Possibly only the junction tracks have been completed at this time as there appears to be an excavation and a hut in the distance. There is a detour sign indicating that possibly vehicles used the completed section and that trackwork was underway for Gertrude St. The overhead has been erected. The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a horse drawn Small Wheel Lorry replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public during the 1880's and early 1900's. A model of a Small Wheel Lorry with a long four spoked wheeled wooden flay tray drawn by a brown horse. The wooden shafts are to control the horse whilst working. It has a grey wooden ice box with a metal lid with ICE painted in black letters inside a black lined outline on the side. On the side of they lorry or dray is painted WOOD - COAL - COKE - C. MEE LA1271 in black paint. These are long strong carts or drays without fixed sides for carrying heavy loads. They were the truck of the horse drawn era, from the large wool bale lorry to the suburban ice and wood lorry. It has been said they had their origins in the German farm wagon.ICE is painted in black capital letters on the side of the ice box. On the side of the lorry is painted - WOOD - COAL - COKE - C. A large thick, heavy green hardcover Girl's Own Annual Volume 46 with a large square picture depicting two women walking in the snow holding bunches of holly. The title is in red print and there is holly surrounding the illustration. The spine has the title printed in gold lettering, holly leaves and Vol 46 in black type at the bottom. It is a 1924 edition of this series. The end papers show green tinted woods and a stream. The coloured frontispiece is of a woman decorating a Christmas Tree from the story - The Christmas Fairy. Tissue paper protects this page. The contents of the book are for girls and women with stories, knitting and sewing patterns, handy home hints, factual information and more. These cherry pitters were used in the early 1900's. The Wandin area had many cherry orchards at the time.A cast iron and wood dual cherry pitter which can be mounted to a table or bench with claws tightened by a winged-head screw underneath. The handle has a wooden bulbous knob, two long curved steel shafts which when engaged, forcibly removes the stone or pit from the cherry. It has a rectangular cast iron trough for the unpitted cherries on the opposite end which is inclined. When the pit is removed it falls in to a small bowl you can place underneath and the cherries are pierced onto the prong to be removed by hand, falling again into a small bowl.GOODELL CO. Used in the late 19th century.A forged steel narrow headed mortising axe with a long wooden handle. It was used in the construction of post and rail fences where it could be used to chip out small pieces in the wood. It has Rob.Sorby Sheffield and Steel Pod stamped on the head with a kangaroo design. The company have been manufacturing 'edge tools' for more than 200 years.
