Carafe believed to be of the mid to late Victorian era and used as a bedside water carafe however the tumbler is possibly not of the same era could be later. These sets were in fashion from the 1700s filled with water and used if the owner required a drink during the night. however the subject item would have been made after 1850 as glass etching started to be used on glass from around this period.The carafe is most likely a vintage example of a Victorian bedside water container and for that is significant. The item was made in England.Bedside water carafe, onion-shaped, with a glass tumbler. The inaugruration of the newly erected Benevolant Asylum took place on 15th March 1860. The asylum is situated on the west side of Commissioner's Gully, Barnard Street, Bendigo. The building itself is the design of Mr Robert A. Love, Architect, the Contractor is Mr Crawford and the Clerk of Works, Mr Wrigley. - from the Bendigo Advertiser 16th March 1860. In the Advertiser Dec 20 1872: the Memorial Stone was added and the design for the front elecvation was carried out as origionally planned with 12 columns of brick and cement each 36 feet high, the bases of which are granite. William Coghill jnr of Coghill's Creek died in 1884 aged 63 and was buried at Ballarat. His wife Catherine Holmes was the daughter of Henry Holmes. She drowned in the 1866 wreck of the Ly-ee-Moon off Green Cape with the loss of 76 livesBlack and white studio photograph of a standing man and seated woman. They are William Coghill and his wife Catherine Dorothy Holmes, the descendants of Ballarat and District pioneer families. They married in 1860. Written in blue ballpoint pen verso: "Thought to be Wm Coghill Jnr and his wife (Miss Holmes). Wm Coghill buried Ballarat, died 1884, aged 63 years. An item from an outstanding and diverse photographic collection, assembled by members of the Christian and Washfold families of Kew.Juvenile Temperance Society Kew ‘Band of Hope’ issued to Orlando Christian on 1 August 1860. The two- colour printed certificate advises the member to avoid the use of tobacco and snuff and commits the child to abstain from intoxicating drinks. The illuminated certificate has a prototype Australian coat of arms centred in the lower border. The Band of Hope movement originated in Leeds in 1847. In contrast to the Rechabites it was a children’s movement. From around circa 1850 Braybrook was already well established and became a staging point for prospectors on their way to the diggings. Local government for this rural area to the west of Melbourne came when the BRAYBROOK ROAD DISTRICT was proclaimed on 28 May 1860. This authority was superseded on 23 January 1871 with the formation of the SHIRE OF BRAYBROOK. The Shire of Braybrook existed for about 80 years during which time it experienced significant industrial growth. The Shire of Braybrook ceased to exist in 1951 when the CITY OF SUNSHINE was formed.The Coat of Arms informs the observer that the Shire of Braybrook was initially a rural area with its images of a cow, sheep, and hay. The reference to industry however probably does not indicate adequately the large growth in industrial activity that occurred within the Shire. Circular board of Masonite painted by A. H. Walker which is a true depiction of the Coat of Arms for the Shire of Braybrook.
