A small timber church, containing an entrance area, congregation area, vestry and a small store room. The main part of the church is rectangular, but the smaller rooms give the building a 'T' shape. The roof is 'A' framed and is corrugated iron. There are three crosses on the roof; one on the entrance and two on the main building; one on the front and one at the rear. There is a bell in the yard. A similar plaque was placed in the chapel of the former Institute to Seamen, Siddeley Street, as indicated on this one. Some money from Miss Little's estate, in England, went to the construction of the new wing of the Siddeley Street Insitute on condition it was used as a chapel until a permanent church was built. We can see the plaque on the top corner of photographs taken in the chapel at that time. Celia Little (1822-1895) was the Reverend Alfred Gurney Goldsmith's aunt. She was the sister of his mother Mary Anne Little (1820-1877) who married Malcolm Goldsmith (1818-1871). Celia didn't marry and lived with her nephew John Philip Goldsmith (1847-1919), Alfred's brother, and his family in Devonport, where she died. Sir Albert Ernest Coates (1895-1977), surgeon, was born on 28 January 1895 at Ballarat, Victoria, eldest of seven children of Arthur Coates, letter carrier, and his wife Clara Annie, née Eustice, both Victorian born. Although their worldly possessions were few, Arthur and Clara raised their family in an affectionate atmosphere and instilled in them the virtues of honesty, industry and education. They were strong supporters of the Methodist Church. (Australian Dictionary of Biography extract). Boroondara General Cemetery, often referred to as Kew cemetery, is one of the oldest cemeteries in Victoria, Australia, created in the tradition of the Victorian garden cemetery. The cemetery, located in Kew, a suburb of Melbourne, is listed as a heritage place on the Victorian Heritage Register. Framed pastel drawing, donated to the Kew Historical Society in 1965 of the entrance to Boroondara General (Kew) Cemetery, believed to be drawn by the sister of the artist George Bell. The drawing shows one of the entrances to the Cemetery before the construction of the high brick wall in 1895. This would be consistent with the life of Caroline Bell (1872-1947). Grave of James Chapman (died 15/03/1875) and Susan Chapman (died 17/03/1895) in Plot# H6 Greensborough Cemetery. This grave has been repaired/restored by descendants of the family.Greensborough Cemetery was created when land was given for the cemetery by Mr William Poulter, a local settler, about 1864.
