Newspaper - JENNY FOLEY COLLECTION: BELLS CHIME FOR ANGELUS
Five swinging bells were installed at Sacred Heart Cathedral in September 2001 and were rung for the first time 30/9/2001. The cast bronze bells were made in France and their eventual size and tones were decided based on the size of the belfry. The bells are each named after a saint; St Liborius, St Augustine, St Patrick, Mother of Good Counsel, and Blessed Mary McKillop.Newspaper article from 2001 written by Monsignor John Duffus, Sacred Heart Cathedral. Bells chime for Angelus: In September, five bells were blessed and installed in the tower of the Sacred Heart Cathedral to mark the centenary of the opening of the nave in 1901. Its boundary was altered twice in 1862 and on 12 December 1864 it was re designated as a Shire. It absorbed Raywood Borough in 1915, and was proclaimed a Rural City in 1990. On 2 December 1994, with the creation of Greater Bendigo City Council, it was abolished through the amalgamation which took place between Bendigo City, Eaglehawk Borough, Huntly Shire, part of McIvor Shire, part of Metcalfe Shire and Strathfieldsaye Shire to form the City of Greater Bendigo. William Gay was born in Scotland inn1865. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1885 and then on to Australia in 1888. He spent the last four years of his life in Bendigo where he wrote his best known individual poems - "Australia 1894", "Australia Infelix" and "Australian Federation".Order of Service booklet for Centenary Commemorative Service in memory of William Gay - A Poet for Federation (2.5.1865 - 22.12.1897). Thomas Jefferson Connelly played an important role in role in seeking support for the movement towards federation of the Australian colonies. Connelly was the first Bendigo born Mayor of Bendigo, and the youngest Mayor of Bendigo. He died in 1892 aged just 34. The portrait was painted by Robert William Bugg from a Bartlett Bros. photograph. It was unveiled in the ANA Hall in View Street by Alfred Deakin on October 18, 1893. A re-enactment of the unveiling was held at the Bendigo Art Gallery on October 18 1993. a. Three page typewritten outline of the speech given by John Quick. b. The Australian Natives’ Association was one of many friendly societies operating in Australia in the 19th century. The ANA was an exclusively Australian organisation established in Victoria on 24 April 1871 by a group of young, white Australian-born men. Meetings were open to all and membership did not involve rituals or regalia. Federation of the Australian colonies became an ANA goal in 1884.
