Photograph - Aerial shots of parts of Bendigo 1934, 1934
AERIAL SHOTS OF PARTS OF BENDIGO 1934 Catalogue No.10584 This document contains scans of a unique set of aerial photographs that were taken over the City of Bendigo on Friday 12th January 1934, at about midday. The photographs were commissioned by Bendigo Mines Limited during their exploration and mining program designed to revitalize the Bendigo Goldfield. The photographs were given to the Victorian Mines Department sometime in the 1950s. The photographs were taken at a relatively low level of about 4000 feet. This gives a very detailed picture of Bendigo as it was in the 1930s. The photos cover the City Centre and are mainly of the goldfields on the south side of the city; the extent of which covers approximately the four corners of Myers Flat, Maiden Gully, Mandurang and One Tree Hill. Streets, roads and places of interest have been identified as best as possible in December 2023. There are 44 maps, and each references the adjoining maps.Typed Notes with CD The CD is one of two and contains a set of 46 images: The folder named "High_Resolution_800dpi" contains the original digital files that were produced by scanning the photographic prints (About A3 size) at 800 dpi using a high quality, large pformat, roll scanner. These files may be too large for some computers. A second CD contains a direstory called "Low_Resolution_300dep" The images in the folder names "Low_Reolution_300dpr" have a lower resolution (300 dpi) and have been rotated 90 degrees clockwise so that the Northern margin of each image is a the top of the screen. Melbourne Legacy
Document, Lest YOU forget. Legacy cares for Australia's biggest family, 1990
This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material. It is possibly prepared for the 1990 campaign. It was in a folder with marketing material from the 1990s. It is a draft from a graphic designer of a logo and the photo that the image was based on. The image was from a postcard and white-out was used to masque the background. It was a manual process before computer design software was commonplace. The slogan "Lest YOU forget" was used with an image of the statue of Simpson and his donkey rather than a personality in 1990 (recycling the slogan from 1989). Possibly to bring the focus back onto the service given to Australia by service men and women. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Examples are Sir Weary Dunlop (1992), Clive James (1993), the Scott family (1994), The Emmanuel brothers (1995), Daryl Somers (1996 and 1997), and Patsy Adam Smith (1994?). Was in a folder with marketing material from the 1990s to 2009, see items 01240 to 01258. The collection shows the types of marketing materials that were produced and the celebrities that were helping Legacy. An example of promotional material from the 1990s. Marketing material and photos were compiled and released to newspapers, also printed as brochures and sometimes as stickers and collection tin wrappers. This draft shows a method of producing marketing material by graphic designers at a time when design software was a niche program that few people had access to.Colour draft of a promotional image for Legacy Week, featuring the statue of Simpson and his donkey.legacy promotion, badge appeal, legacy week -

photograph - Cartographic Squadron Production – Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, c1980
This collection of 12 photos was most likely taken in 1980. The photos were most likely taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Ante Room, the Attic and small offices on the top floor of Fortuna Villa. The computer based Editwriter typesetting system was introduced in 1975 as a replacement to the aging Fotosetter machine. It was operated by a specialised technician, who generated a large variety of map type styles and sizes quickly and reliably, as well as text panels. CPL Richards performed this task for several years and in photo .1P and .2P is reading off a type order next to the computer monitor. Output on Copy proof adhesive backed stripping type film replaced messy wax and spray adhesives in 1978. The Editwriter capability supported all RASvy units and contractor type setting requirements. Scribing was the cartographic process of drafting features such as drainage, relief, vegetation, roads and culture on specially coated map reproduction material. The cartographic technician scribed out the map feature such as a contour to a specified line width on the map sheet, using a tool affixed with a sapphire tipped cutter. The quality control edit (Proving) stage of map production was the first opportunity to inspect a proof of the map independently and systematically. Proving tasks were carried out by technicians conversant of the map product specification and task requirement, however, was not involved in its production. Corrections were identified, marked up and sent to back to the correcting section or contractors. Terrain Embossing was a manual map production technique to produce hill shading on medium to small scale graphics and air charts. SPR John Martin is seen in photos .8P to.10P using a fine embossing metal stylus to push down on the drainage impression on a thin malleable opaque plastic material (AK Poligraphy). Ridge lines were then pushed down using the contour impression as a guide, on the opposing side of the AK Poligraphy to create a 3D plastic model terrain effect. The map impression was sprayed with white paint and photographed to create a contone tone hill shade. SPR Gina (Coore) Neilson is seen in photo .11P washing a contone positive of a land mass in a solution. The contone components were registered to the map sheet, as shown in photo .12P and masked using an air brush and a halftone negative was then created. The terrain embossing method of producing hill shading was more efficient to produce than previous specialised artistic methods such pencil/eraser and air brush. Furthermore, a more consistent enhancement of terrain on charts was achieved between technicians. This is a set of 12 photographs of Cartographic Squadron performing four map production tasks at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo c1980. The first ten photographs were on 35mm negative film and were scanned at 96 dpi. Photos .11P and .12P were on photographic paper and scanned at 300 dpi. They are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. .1) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Editwriter typesetter, CPL Paul Richards. .2) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Editwriter typesetter, CPL Paul Richards. .3) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Scribing contours on a RAAF Chart, SPR Megan (McBurney) Reynolds. .4) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Scribing contours on a RAAF Chart, SPR Megan (McBurney) Reynolds. .5) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Scribing contours on a RAAF Chart, SPR Rod Skidmore. .6) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Scribing contours on a RAAF Chart, SPR Rod Skidmore. .7) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Formal quality control edit (Proving), CPL Ian Belmont. .8) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Hill Shade Terrain Embossing, SPR John Martin. .9) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Hill Shade Terrain Embossing, SPR John Martin. .10) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Hill Shade Terrain Embossing, SPR John Martin. .11) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Hill Shade Terrain Embossing, SPR Gina (Coore) Neilson. .12) - Photo, black & white, c1980, Hill Shade Terrain Embossing, unidentified..1P to .10P No personnel are identified. .11P and .12P annotated ‘Terrain Embossing’royal australian survey corps, rasvy, army survey regiment, army svy regt, fortuna, asr, carto -

Photograph - Technical Tour of the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1984
This collection of 10 photos was most likely taken in 1984. It’s evident in these photos the visitors were taken on a tour through the production areas of Air Survey Squadron, with Wild B8 photogrammetic plotting workstations featured in the first three photos and demonstrations of the AUTOMAP 2 production system in the following photos. The AUTOMAP 2 system was an upgrade to the AUTOMAP 1 system comprising Intergraph graphic edit workstation terminals networked to VAX 750/785 main frame computers. Unlike AUTOMAP 1, operators could display digital topographic features on monitors for editing. Successful adaptation of this system meant RASvy was at the forefront of digital mapping/cartographic systems in Australia and overseas. The system comprised Input (B8 feature extraction) Raster Scanning (digitising from compilation sheets, Graphic Edit (cartographic completion) and Plot Verification Sub Systems. CAPT Rob John was the project officer responsible for the acceptance trials and implementation of AUTOMAP 2. The system was operational from 1984 to its ‘Newheart’ upgrade in 1993. Throughout its life, the system was progressively refined with productivity gains, achieved from award winning technical development in-house by talented and innovative Army Survey Regiment personnel. This is a set of 10 photograph of a technical tour of the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1985. Photograph - Orthorectification Equipment - Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1975, c1988
Orthophoto mapping provided the Survey Corps with the capability to produce map products quickly in the event of a crisis. These are four photographs of equipment used by the Army Survey Regiment to produce orthophotomaps. The Wild GZ1 orthophoto projector shown in photo.1P was introduced in 1973 and was the first equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography. Height profiles were originally produced on a PEB8 Stereo profiler and later were software generated. Photos of the PEB8 are available in Victorian Collections item 6222.17P, photos .5P and .6P. In the same era the IBM 1130 computer; OMI/Nistri AP/C-3 analytical plotter with coordinatograph, OP/C orthophoto projector and Zeiss Planimat D2 stereoplotters were introduced. Orthorectification is the process of removing geometric distortions and scale errors/variations from images. Images have tilt and relief distortions that make it difficult to compare accurately a map and an image of the same geographic area. Once an image is orthorectified, features on the image are shown in their planimetric locations. The WILD OR1 orthophoto projector and workstation shown in photos .2P to.4P was introduced in the mid-1980s. It was the second-generation equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography, replacing the system introduced in 1973. See items 6124.5P and 6133.4P for more photographs of orthorectification equipment. These four photographs of orthorectification equipment were taken at the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1975 and c1988. The photos are on 35mm colour slides and scanned at 96 dpi. Typewriter accessories, Early 20th century
This box contains typewriter equipment for a Remington typewriter. The Remington company was founded in U.S.A. and it produced the first typewriter for commercial use in 1873. In 1886 the Remington family business was sold but the name was retained and typewriters with the Remington Rand brand name were sold from 1927 on. Typewriters have now been replaced by computers. This box of equipment belonged to Dr Horace Holmes who would have used a typewriter in his medical practice in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century and perhaps would also have used a typewriter in the activities of the many community groups with which he was associated. Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959) was born and educated in Tasmania and completed a medical degree at the University of Melbourne. He commenced a practice at Warrnambool in 1906 and was the honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in community affairs (foundation President of the Warrnambool Rotary Club, a member of the Warrnambool Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, a Warrnambool Hospital Committee member, a long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee. Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed fishing, bowls and golf. This box of typewriter equipment is of interest as an item in the collection of Horace Iles Holmes, a doctor who was prominently associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a rectangular-shaped black cardboard box with the name ‘Remington’ on it. It is heavily stained inside. The box contains nine objects, most identified as relevant to typewriter maintenance and cleaning:- a paint brush with a wooden handle and bristles – perhaps used for dusting the typewriter keys, two glass bottles which once contained typewriter oil but which are now empty, a red and black typewriter ribbon in a metal container, another metal container with a plunge mechanism for ejecting oil, a metal stick with a sharp end, possibly for cleaning the typewriter keys and three other unidentified small metal objects.Remingtonremington, typewriters, office equipment, dr horace holmes, warrnambool, warrnambool history, typewriter accessories -

Photograph - GILLIES COLLECTION: GILLIES HISTORY PHOTOS ON CD, 1940-1950s
For about 40 years the corner of Hargraves and Williamson Streets in Bendigo in rural Victoria had been known for its arresting aroma. From a hole in a window wafted the smell of Gillies Brothers' meat pies. The Gillies window, along with the nearby Shamrock Hotel, ANZ Bank and Post Office, was one of the delights of Bendigo and proof that mass-produced food can still be delicious. Gillies went from strength to strength, surviving listing on the second board and a handover to a younger generation of managers.Gillies had three factories, 10 shops in rural Victoria and Melbourne. Les Gillies, one of three brothers who founded the baking business after the difficult drought years preceding 1950, admits that the company has not always been run along the most modern business methods. Change began with the preparation of a business plan subsidised by the Victorian Department of Industry, Technology and Resources in 1974. Prepared by Cruickshanks, the plan formed the basis of the company's float on the second board. Capital expanded to $4.4 million. In 1988, a second plan was produced by Chris Mason and Associates covering business, marketing, computer utilisation and human resources. This factory for Gillies pies originally opened in the 1950s, but has sadly been closed and abandoned since about 2006.CD Gillies History Photos containig 11 photos of shops, staff and factories in Bendigo.bendigo, business, gillies bros, gillies pies -

This box contains maintenance equipment for a Remington typewriter. The Remington company was founded in U.S.A. and it produced the world’s first typewriter for commercial use in 1873. Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959) was born and educated in Tasmania and he completed a medical degree at the University of Melbourne. He commenced a practice in Warrnambool in 1906 and was the honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’ at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in community affairs (foundation President of Warrnambool Rotary Club, a member of the Warrnambool Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, a Warrnambool Hospital Committee member, a long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee. Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed fishing, bowls and golf. This box of typewriter equipment is of interest as an item in the collection of Horace Iles Holmes, a doctor who was prominently associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a rectangular-shaped black cardboard box with a detachable lid. The box contains eight items used for typewriter maintenance. They are a glass bottle containing typewriter oil, a round metal oil dispenser, a small metal hook, a small metal spanner, a metal wire brush, and three bristle brushes, one with a bone handle and one with a wooden handle enclosed in cellophane. The box is somewhat stained inside. Machine - Axminster Carpet Loom, Brintons Ltd (UK), c. 1910
The Axminster Carpet Loom has been set up as a focal point in the centre of the National Wool Museum. The loom was originally built by Brintons in England around 1910 and was initially operating in Geelong in 1960. Brintons designed and built most of their own looms and ancillary equipment. When superseded in 1975 the loom was donated to the Melbourne College of Textiles for weaving training. The College has now donated the loom to the National Wool Museum and Brintons engineering staff has restored it to full working condition. This loom is known as an Axminster gripper loom. The gripper system was invented by Brintons in 1890 and operates using a gripper shaped like a birds beak. This grips the yarn, the yarn is then cut and the gripper swings down to place the tuft into the woven backing. This particular loom also uses a jacquard system for weaving colours. In jacquard weaving, punched cards are used to instruct the loom as to which colour to use. The system was invented by Joseph Jacquard, a silk weaver from Lyon, and was introduced in 1804. It revolutionised pattern weaving as it had the capacity to create intricate patterns through the use of the cards. By 1833 there were approximately 100,000 power-looms used in Great Britain that had been influenced by Jacquards invention. Joseph Jacquard died in 1834. Charles Babbage was later to adapt Jacquards punch-card system to produce a calculator that was the forerunner of todays methods of computer programmingAxminster carpet loom featuring over 1000 Jacquard punch cards and over 100 bobbins of different colours of wool.loom carpet wool, geelong woolbrokers' association, geelong, auction -

Footwear - Boots, Rossiters Ltd, 1908-1920
Rossi Boots started in 1910 when Arthur Edward Rossiter resigned from his position as a supervisor at the Adelaide Boot Company and started Rossiters Ltd in a small tin shed in his backyard. A larger factory was needed so the first of three stages of a factory was built. During the Second World War Rossi Boots was a major supplier to the military making hundreds of thousands of boots that saw service in various theatres including New Guinea. The war years saw the number of employees peak at around five hundred. As methods of manufacturing footwear changed as petroleum-based products such as glues, rubbers and plastics have replaced the traditional ones of leather, nails, and threads. More modern machinery was introduced to directly mould soles to the bottom of the boot. At the end of 1987, the company moved from Unley to Hilton this move allowed production to be carried out in a more modern, fit-for-purpose factory. Since then the company has continued to change; introducing computer-controlled machines for cutting, sewing, and attaching soles. These changes occurred whilst many of Rossi's competitors moved offshore. Whilst the introduction of these machines reduced the number of local staff, it has enabled Rossi Boots to continue to manufacture in Australia. In March 2019 Rossi Boots relocated the factory, warehouse, and headquarters from Hilton to Kilburn, South Australia. This move to a new, expansive location allows Rossi Boots to continue manufacturing in South Australia housing all operations under one roof. The items are significant as they show the beginnings of an important manufacturer and innovator that is still in the original founding family's ownership and is producing boots today with exports to many countries. Book, Touch Method Instructor for Remington Typewriters, c. 1931
The instruction book was donated together with a typewriter and manual by David Sack, previous owner of Sack's Jewellers, Liebig St in Warrnambool. The typewriter and books were owned by William Sack, owner of the business Sacks Jewellers at 115 Liebig Street, Warrnambool. He commenced trading in the early 1900’s; and used this typewriter in the business from its purchase date, around 1931, through until about 1996. William and his wife June had three children, Eric, Audrey and David. The children were owners/partners of Sack’s Jewellers after William’s passing in 1976. Eric and David were ‘owners of the business’, with Audrey carrying out much of the clerical work. Eric died in about 1984 and David sold the practise in 1996. During the 65 years of business the typewriter was used for all the normal applications of a jeweller’s; preparing invoices, guarantees, taxation records. But in addition the four members of the Sack family were very involved in Church activities, particularly in lay administration and lay preaching in the Baptist Church, and the typewriter gained a lot of after-hours use. The family actively supported overseas Missions in India, SE Asia, and Africa. After the sale of the business in 1996, Audrey took the typewriter home for her community activities (David got a computer). In the 1980’s David volunteered as the Clock Repairer at Flagstaff Hill for the historical instruments. In the early days this took some long hours to get the clocks working, but in recent years he has just been ‘on call’ if needed. He is an alert 85 year old and just in the last 12 months has given up a busy schedule of Sunday Lay Preaching around the district. (2015) The typewriter and instruction books are of local significance, being previously owned and used in a local business for about 100 years.Book, Touch Method Instructor for Remington Typewriters. Plaque Australian Staff College Queenscliffe, Australian Staff College Queenscliffe
At the end of World War II, the Federal Government decided to increase the strength of the post-war Regular Army and Cabinet gave approval for the establishment of a Staff College in Australia. On 27 February 1946, the Staff School (Australia) was re-named the Australian Staff College. Authority was given to raise the College and to locate it at Fort Queenscliff. Because the Fort was not ready for immediate occupation, a temporary home was found for the College, in June 1946, at the School of Infantry, Seymour Victoria. On 26 October 1946, the advance party of the College arrived at Fort Queenscliff and the first staff course to be conducted at the new College began in January 1947. Only in November 1979, after much thought and discussion, was it decided that the Australian Army Staff College would have a permanent home at Fort Queenscliff. On 1 January 1982, the College was renamed the Command and Staff College. This reflected the new aim of the Course which included both command and staff aspects. New support facilities were opened at Crow’s Nest Barracks in 1985 and work began in 1986 on the new instruction block at Fort Queenscliff. On 29 January 1988, the new Military Instructional Facility (MIF) was officially opened by the then Chief of the General Staff (CGS). The MIF features a lecture hall, a model room, syndicate rooms, computer centre, and library. Major rebuilding of the Officers Mess and Mess Accommodation was completed in mid-1990. By December 1996, 1224 officers had graduated from the Command and Staff College. The last course conducted under single service auspices, graduated in December 2000, thus bringing to a close a successful 62 years of Command and Staff College operation. http://www.fortqueenscliff.com.au/page11.htmWooden Plaque 15cm x 13cmAustralian Staff College Queenscliffe -

Photograph - Photographic Technicians performing tasks at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, c1960s
These eight photographs were most likely taken in the 1960s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Although Photo .1P is not annotated the remainder have the name of the technicians written on the back. The equipment operated by the technicians is the KLIMCH Commodore camera. The main tasks undertaken by the technicians were most likely enlargements and reductions of map reproduction material. The KLIMSCH Commodore camera was introduced in 1953 and was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It was replaced with a new model of the same size in 1979. The new model with its computer-based interface provided productivity gains with improved speed and its consistent results led to less wastage in time and materials. Its variomat lens system provided improved retention of map feature linear weights during the camera reduction process. The typed description pasted on the back of photo .5P states “Cpl R. MacKenzie of Bentley, Perth (WA) of the AHQ Survey Regt, located at “Fortuna”, Bendigo, (Vic). Has been in the Army for 5 years. He removes the lens cap from the 70 inch F16 lens of the giant KLIMSCH camera used in map making for the Army. The camera which was specially made for the Army in Germany is fully automatic and power operated. It is claimed to be one of the biggest automatic cameras of its type in the world. It was made to the specifications of the Aust Army Survey Corps to assist in the production of the very high standard maps for the Army. The AHQ Survey Regt also assists Commonwealth and other Govt departments in the printing of maps required other than for Army needs. The KLIMSCH camera is used for cartographic mapping photography.” This is a set of photographs of technicians operating photographic reproduction equipment at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Bendigo c1960s. Pamphlet - Promotional brochure, Bachelor of Visual Arts, Graphic Design/Multimedia, c1999
Promoting the Graphic Design/Multimedia program being offered by the University of Ballarat at the Mt Helen Campus. Promoted course as "one of the smallest and arguably the best three year programs of its kind in Australia and the South Pacific region." The brochure lists student awards received including Platinum and Gold in the AGFA International Young Designer Contest, 1999; two meritorious awards in The Art Directors Club Student Awards, New York, USA 1999; Graphis New Talent 1999; two Gold in Souther Cross Packaging Awards, 1998. At time of publication, the School of Arts, Visual Arts reportedly had 210 students with majors in Graphic Design/Multimedia, Ceramics/3D, Painting, Drawing, and Multidiscipline. Minors studies included Printmaking, Photography, 3D, 2D, and Graphic Communication. ___ Course aimed to train "independent, flexible thinkers". The course promised to "Promote creativity, originality and imaginative thinking; Develop self-directed learners, displaying initiative in the formation of ideas and the confidence to construct personal responses; Develop appropriate conceptual, technical and professional skills; Develop the student's critical process: ability to undertake research, and to make informed decisions; Clarify thinking, concepts and understanding and deep knowledge, attitudes and skills enabling the designer to respond to community needs." Studio and working environment described as "one open space with working facilities for approximately 75 students across 3 year levels. The area is divided up into work stations where 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students intermix, allowing a natural interaction. These workstations are configurations of six, consisting of two students from each year level. This reinforces the area's ongoing development with an open ethos and cross-level delivery and learning. This maximises the use of information in order for it to be applied throughout all levels of the learning process, whilst allowing a natural mentor arrangment to be developed for all first year students, " "The open ethos approach also encourages students and staff to freely express their opinions in relation to design via cross-level critiques, whilst allowing for a liberal arts approach and structure to the development of the creative process." "Emphasis is placed on experimentation, innovation, expression and the development of the individual's design philosophies, concepts and style." Also notes the 24 hour access Macintosh laboratory, with 34 Power Macintosh computers, ratio of one for every 2.5 students. Each with a Fujitsu Dyna Magneto Optical drive for file storage and transport. Two Sharp scanners, Phaser Dye-Sublimation Extra Tabloid colour printer and Ricoh A3 colour printer. Two large format printers. Digital and video cameras. Software: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat; QuarkXpress; Macromedia Freehand; Pagemaker; Premier; Director; 3D Extreme; Sound Eidt, Shockwave, Infinite 3D and After Effects. Approx 4.5 staff, "all of whom are practicing designers. They have a full understanding of industry requirements and trends which assists in the development of industrial contacts when specialists are required." Prospective students interviewed in late Nov/ early Dec, face to face. Present a "comprehensive folio of work", academic records, references. "Selection is determined by the perceived potential of the student, their motivation and reason for study within the field as well as their previous experience in the Visual Arts. Folio work should be representative of the individual's ideas and abilities. Qualities of importance are: originality, innovation, imagination, experimentation and a competent display of the basic skills associated with visual arts [evidence of drawing skills should be included]." Demonstration of GD/MM computer skills an advantage. Students also asked to bring sketch books. Once the driver reached the vehicle, they put the key into the black-coloured terminal (tram driver's keypad - TDKP or bus driver's keypad) to upload the shift data to the vehicle. This was also the method used to transfer the 'blacklist' of periodical passes that had been stolen or misappropriated to each vehicle. IE if an annual Metcard had been stolen, once the holder reported it to Metcard they would blacklist the ticket number and this would be sent out to every depot and piece of equipment. From memory there were 100 slots in the blacklist. When a tram driver was finishing their shift (either being taken or running in) they would transfer all of the validations and ticket sale information to the PM key by inserting it a few minutes before the end of shift and downloading all of this data from the vehicle. They would then be required, on arriving back at the starter's office, to insert the key in the cream coloured terminal once more and copy all of the information across to the main system. Bus drivers also issued tickets from their BDKPs so the black PM key was also used for ensuring the accounting information was copied across to the main system. My memory might be faulty but I recall using them at railway stations with the Booking Office Machines (for starting and finishing shifts). No transfer of ticket issuance data however, as there was a computer equipment cabinet at each railway station with a DSL or cable link back to the OneLink central computers (in the revenue clearing house) I don't know what happened with the MTH cars on the Stony Point rail line but I could presume that there was a cabinet with a TDKP equivalent in it and a similar procedure for start and finish of shift.trams, tramways, ticket machines, metcard -

This "Remington Portable Model 5, Remington Business Service" typewriter is in very good working order and was donated in its case complete with its Operating Instructions and a Touch Method typing instruction book. The typewriter was owned by William Sack, owner of the business Sacks Jewellers at 115 Liebig Street, Warrnambool. (2015)The typewriter is of local significance, being previously owned and used by Sacks Jewellers, a local business that had been in operation for about 100 years.Typewriter, Remington, "Remington Portable Model 5, Remington Business Service".
