The collection holds a number of whale oil lamps which, alongside kerosene lamps, show the development of different types of lighting.Glass lamp base with metal burner and wick raiser. Textiles. Large pieces of linen, 119 cm x 96 cm edged with a border, 8.5 cm deep of cotton lace, matching the lace of the bedspread. This lace has a corded effect, outlining 'finger shapes' of floral pattern, alternating with an open chain stitch, looped effect. Like the bedspread, the pillowcase is embroidered with the initials in satin stitch and some cut work embroidery. A smaller rectangle of linen fabric is stitched to the back of the fabric, to hold a pillow in place. Measuring 81 cm. x 48 cm. This envelope is tied with three ties of cotton tape. It could be presumed that these pillow slips would be a decorative feature of the bed linen. As on the bedspread, lavishly embroidered initials may be the initials of Caterina (Ina) Lamaro, who married Giovanni (Jack) Favaloro, or Caterina (Kitty) Lopes, who married Salvatore (Salve) Favaloro.textiles, domestic, two embroidered and lace pillow cases

This panel forms two gracious curves, where the initials C F have been embroidered and decorated with a curvaceous three segment clover leaf. A 10 cm deep crochet frill finishes the curves. The initials C F may be those of Caterina Lamaro who married Giovanni Favaloro, or those of Caterina Lopes who married Salvatore Favaloro. A linen fabric ''envelope'' has been formed by folding the fabric and stitching one side seam. Textiles. With the same lace edging as the pillowcases 11408.102, but no embroidered initial. These pillowcases, along with the bedspread (11408.101) complete a delightful set. Measuring 119 cm x 96 cm, the pillow slips have an envelope 48 cm x 80 cm stitched to the back, to hold the pillow. This is tied with three sets of two cotton tapes. Textiles. Finely woven linen bed spread, white in colour, and with a ''turn-back'' top to come over or under the pillows. A 10.5 cm deep band of cotton lace trims the edge of this turn-back, and is gathered around the two lower corners, and extends 74 cm. along the side edges of the turn-back. An insert of lace, 2.5 cm wide, also outlines the turn-back, 8 cm from the edge of the linen. The lace trim has a scalloped edge, and a corded effect. Above the narrow band of lace, are beautifully embroidered initials CF. Some small red cotton embroidery on top hem-left hand corner. Textiles. Very large cover, with an envelope to enclose the pillow, stitched on the underside, with cotton tape ties to enclose the pillow. Beautiful fine cotton broderie fabric (possibly Swiss cotton broderie anglaise) edges the pillow. Corners of the embroidered cotton have been mitred in an unusual way, with the excess fabric still evident, in a 'kite-shaped' manner, in each corner. The embroidered cotton edging features a scalloped edge, with circular, and floral design. Three bands of drawn thread work at each end-a centre band 2.5 cm wide, and stitched to form a decorative pattern, and two bands, 1 cm wide-one on either side of the wider band. These are edged with a spoke stitch, which draws the thread into little ''bar shapes" - 3 to each centimeter. Textiles. This is a beautiful remnant of fine cream silk fabric, with a 3.5 cm deep band of cotton lace, woven with a floral design, stitched around the lower edge. A triangular shape above the lower edge, is formed by the insertion of a piece of 2 cm wide cotton lace, also with a floral design, folded and machine stitched as an insertion. The same lace is also inserted in a 9.5 cm high "frame" over an embroidered panel 7.5 cm x 6 cm wide and featuring a delicate circular embroidered and cut-work floral design. Textiles. Damask weave fabric, with a design of a rose, with buds, and two stems of leaves, and a lovely soft sheen. Two bands of six zig zag peaks, are made by using pulled thread embroidery, and form a border either side of a row of pulled threadwork diamond shapes, 7 cm x 7 cm. This decorative border is at each end of the runner, which also is completed with a 12 cm deep fringe. A geometric patterned weave forms the background to the pulled thread embroidery, while a single rose and bud weave is tucked into each zig zag, and a scroll design features at each fringed end.textiles, domestic, double damask table runner

The Hamilton-Smith collection was donated by the children of Grace Mary Hamilton-Smith nee Ellwood (1911-2004) and John Hamilton-Smith (1909-1984) who settled in Wodonga in the 1940s. The Ellwood family had lived in north-east Victoria since the late 1800s. Grace’s mother, Rosina Ellwood nee Smale, was the first teacher at Baranduda in 1888, and a foundation member of the C.W.A. Rosina and her husband Mark retired to Wodonga in 1934. Grace and John married at St. David’s Church, Albury in 1941. John was a grazier, and actively involved in Agricultural Societies. The collection contains significant items which reflect the local history of Wodonga, including handmade needlework, books, photographs, a wedding dress, maps, and material relating to the world wars. This collar was made using the broderie anglaise needlework technique that incorporates embroidery, cutwork and needle lace. This technique originated in sixteenth century Europe and became popular in England in the nineteenth century. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century prior to the mass production of clothing and textiles, needlework, alongside motherhood, was the defining work of women. Hand sewing and embroidery was central in the everyday lives and domestic roles of women.This item is unique, handmade and has a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. With the approval of the railways, in February1959 a special tourist train was organized by the Australian Railways Historical Society in conjunction with the "Kanyana: Festival Committee of Colac, Victoria, to run from Colac to Beech Forest. Eight NBH carriages, in store at Newport, were transferred to Colac. The train proved to be so popular that additional trains were later run over the next two years until the temporarily disused Puffing Billy needed the NBH carriages returned.Locomotive G42, labelled "A.R.H.S., Special Excursion, Kanyana", with a guard's van, eight NBH excursion carriages and an additonal guard's van attached, stands at Gellibrand Station with a large group of passengers milling outside the train.
