The photograph was taken on the stairs at the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Headquarters, 452 St. Kilda Road, Melbourne, after Sister Joanne Wilkinson, Nurse Educator, Sister Pat (Paddy) Rowley, RDNS Principal Nurse Educator, and Miss Norma Bryan, RDNS Deputy Director of Nursing, were awarded Fellowships of the Australian College of Nursing. Their regalia worn as Fellows, was a black gown with the wide trim to the front edges of scarlet satin and the regalia hood of inner white and outer scarlet satin. The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) describes the award as follows:- "Fellowship of the Australian College of Nursing (ACN) is a prestigious member status awarded to nurses in recognition of significant professional achievement. Fellowship recognizes the experience and contribution of nurse leaders to ACN and the profession." RDNS senior nursing staff could apply for scholarships to further their education outside of RDNS. Inspected by Joanna Freslov, archaeologist 2.6.2008. Ground-edged axes first appeared in south-eastern Australia about 4,000 years ago and were used either with handles or hand-held. Stone tools were used for a variety of purposes, in ways similar to those of steel knives, axes, hammers and chisels. Ground-edge tools are made from fracture-resistant stone, such as basalt. This is able to withstand repeated impact making it suitable for use in objects such as stone axes. The stone was quarried, and then roughly shaped into a tool blank with blows from a hammerstone. The edges were then sharpened and refined by grinding the tool against a coarse, gritty rock. The necessary tools and equipment for hunting, fishing and warfare were one of the very few items that Aboriginals carried with them from place to place. Most were used for a multiplicity of purposes. Because many were made from raw natural materials, such as wood, generally only partial remains are found today. First established in 1922, the British Empire Medal (BEM) was awarded to subjects of the United Kingdom who had provided meritorious service at a management or non-commissioned officer level. It consists of a silver coloured medal depicting a seated 'Britannia' with the sun above her left shoulder. Around the edge of medal is written 'For God and The Empire for Meritorious Service'. On the reverse of the medal is a crown above the letters 'ER II Instituted by King George V'. Four heraldic lions surround the edges and is hung from a pink ribbon with pearl-gray edges. This lantern slide shows the Ovens District Hospital (also called the Ovens Goldfields Hospital) in Beechworth in approximately 1900. The Hospital was built as part of a community push to develop the infrastructure needed for a permanent town in the 1850s. At the time there was no hospital located between Melbourne and the NSW town of Goulburn and it was recognised that the nature of mining and agricultural work predisposed people to serious injury. The community voted in 1853 to raise funds for a hospital and a voluntary committee elected from people who contributed £2 or more annually determined the organisation's management policies, which aimed to provide care for poor people at rates levied according to the person's means. Ongoing operations of the hospital were primarily supported by Government grants, however. The foundation stone was laid at a site in Church Street at a ceremony held 1st September 1856 which was attended by 2000 people using a locally crafted trowel with a tin ore handle and pure gold blade. The hospital, which was designed by J.H. Dobbyn, cost £2347. The hospital had two wards, a dispensary, apartments for a resident surgeon and the matron, an operating theatre and a board room. Further medical facilities including services to meet the cultural and health needs of the local Chinese community were later added, in addition to a Palladian-style cut-granite face built in 1862-63. It functioned as the region's primary hospital until surpassed by the Wangaratta Hospital in 1910. In the 1940s much of the building materials were salvaged and repurposed, with the exception of the facade which was restored in 1963 by the Beechworth Lions Club and still stands today. The facade featured on the covers of local history volume 'Beechworth: a Titan's Field' by Carole Woods and heritage-focused travel guide the 'Readers Digest Book of Historic Australian Towns'. Lantern slides, sometimes called 'magic lantern' slides, are glass plates on which an image has been secured for the purpose of projection. Glass slides were etched or hand-painted for this purpose from the Eighteenth Century but the process became more popular and accessible to the public with the development of photographic-emulsion slides used with a 'Magic Lantern' device in the mid-Nineteenth Century. Photographic lantern slides comprise a double-negative emulsion layer (forming a positive image) between thin glass plates that are bound together. A number of processes existed to form and bind the emulsion layer to the base plate, including the albumen, wet plate collodion, gelatine dry plate and woodburytype techniques. Lantern slides and magic lantern technologies are seen as foundational precursors to the development of modern photography and film-making techniques.This glass slide is significant because it provides insight into Beechworth's built environment and infrastructure in the early Twentieth Century, around the time of Australia's Federation. This sign was probably attached to a building or placed in a window and was most likely to have been at the Timor Street, Warrnambool State Savings Bank building. The State Savings Bank had its origins in the Port Phillip Savings Bank established in Melbourne in 1841 and in 1853 it became known as the Commissioners’ Savings Banks in the Colony of Victoria. A Warrnambool Savings Bank branch was established in 1859 in temporary premises and in 1860 it moved to a new building in Liebig Street. In 1884 a new sandstone building was erected in Timor Street and the bank operated from there until 1957. In 1912 the Commissioners’ Savings Banks in Victoria became the State Savings Bank. From 1957 to 1990 the Warrnambool State Savings Bank (called the State Bank of Victoria, Warrnambool Branch after 1980) had premises in Liebig Street. In 1990 the State Bank was subsumed into the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.The Warrnambool State Savings Bank was a leading banking establishment in Warrnambool for 130 years and this sign is an important memento of that institution. This is a rectangular piece of fine brown metal mesh with an ornamental gold trim around the edges and gold lettering. This photo album was collated by Ray Pearson, a tramways history enthusiast and collector. It was donated to the museum in 2012 along with one other photo album, by his grandson.This photo ablum is significant for containing a large volume of historic photographs of vehicles, personnel and events related to the the Victorian tramways - particularly Victorian Railways, Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong tramways - from c1920's to c1994.Brown rectangular photo album (landscape format) containing photographs, newsclippings, postcards and other paper documents. The album contains 25 separate leaves plus a front and back cover. The album is bound on the left edge with brown cord, tied in a knot at the front. Although living conditions were basic, families still held onto their traditional English and European customs and took pride in presenting elements of refined society. Pies with top crusts need to be vented, to allow steam to escape. Funnel-style steam vents have been placed in the centre of fruit and meat pies during cooking since Victorian times. Pie funnels were used to prevent pie filling from boiling up and leaking through the crust by allowing steam to escape from inside the pie. They also supported the pastry crust in the centre of the pie, so that it did not sag in the middle, and are occasionally known as 'crust holders'. Older ovens had more problems with uniform heating, and the pie funnel prevented boil-over in pie cooking. The traditional inverted funnels, with arches on the bottom for steam to enter, were followed by ceramic birds; and from the 1940s they have been produced in a multitude of designs. Creigiau Pottery of South Wales produced a 'Welsh Pie Dragon' in copper lustreware. This trend has been particularly noticeable in recent times, due to their increasing popularity as gifts and collectors' items rather than simply utilitarian kitchen tools. This furniture cover is one of many 19th century items of furniture, linen and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by, Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with Warrnambool and the Giles Family history. Items donated by the family have come to be known as the “Giles Collection”. Many items in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage were donated by Vera and Aurelin Giles and mostly came from the home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton) who married in 1880 and whose photos are on display in the parlour. Henry was born at Tower Hill in 1858, and was a labourer on the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater before leaving in 1895 for around seven years to build bridges in NSW. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook and she attended Mailor’s Flat State School and where she eventually was to become a student teacher. After which she became a governess at “Injemiara” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, had once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family consisted of six, some of the children were born at Mailor’s Flat and later some children at Wangoom. They lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, and this is where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940.The Giles family collection is of social significance at a local level, because it not only illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill during it’s establishment. Plates such as this were a souvenir of a trip or holiday. Greensborough was a popular picnic destination in the mid 20th Century and this style of souvenir would have been a popular purchase. From the Jessie Partington Scholes collection. Jessie was an amateur singer from age 12 to her death and a member of the pioneering Partington family of Greensborough. The item is her admission ticket as a choir member for the memorial service for the late King George Vi, held at Victoria's Parliament House on 17th Feb 1952. The item is a limited edition as it was only distributed to choir members. It is in good condition and has reliable provenance through her niece, Faye Partington Fort.
