... Six large glass bottles - four clear and two green. All... these glass bottles. The items have a clear association with Orbost ...These bottles were used at the pharmacies in Orbost. Chemists who worked in Orbost included Henry Cottman; James Alfred Dubois Williams; Harry Arthur Murray; Miss P.E .Mason (Phyllis Estelle?); Miss Sybil Monica Buzza; Thomas James Frayer; Australia Shaw; James David Torley; John William Zimmer; Dalkeith William Steele; William Thomas Hollingsworth; E.E. Cohen; R.S. Anderson; Frances John Perry Faith Everard Pardew and Charles Anthony Wurf.Medicinal bottles are probably the largest and most diverse group of bottles. The practices of early pharmacists are revealed through these glass bottles. The items have a clear association with Orbost.Six large glass bottles - four clear and two green. All have narrow necks with glass stoppers and are clearly labelled with black print on a white background. Each of the the two coloured glass bottles have a fluted surface. These apothecary bottles were used to dispense medications and also for show or display purposes. The labels under glass bottles had a recessed section that the label was placed into. The label was then covered with a thin piece of glass to prevent the label from becoming damaged by the bottles contents. 3210.1 - "MIST ; OXYMELLIS : CONC : 1 TO 4" 3210.2 - " OL : CARBOL : 1 IN 10" 3210.3 - "SPT. Soda Syphon, 1900-1930’s
... -sided clear glass bottle, an internal glass tube and a metal...Soda syphon (or siphon). Glass bottle, clear, multi sided.... It comprises a multi-sided clear glass bottle, an internal glass tube ...This soda syphon (or siphon) was distributed by John Fletcher of Warrnambool, and made by the British Syphon Mfg. Co. Ltd. of London between the 1900s-1930s. It comprises a multi-sided clear glass bottle, an internal glass tube and a metal release valve and spout on the top. It was used to dispense pressurised, effervescent soda water. It was often used as an alternative to water or added to fruit juices and cordials. The text on this bottle states that it remains the property of the retailer, John Fletcher, and must be returned to him. Customers were asked for a deposit on the bottle, which would be refunded when the bottle was exchanged or continued as the deposit on a fresh bottle. Returned bottles would be cleaned and recharged with the gas and sold again. Soda syphon are bottles, glass or metal, with a release valve and spout on the top. The valve lever on the top of the syphon, when depressed, causes the gas in the syphon to force the water up through the tube and out of the spout. The bottle’s mechanism gives the water an effervescent quality to make bubbly drinks such as sparkling mineral water, soda water and sparkling water. ABOUT JOHN FLETCHER John Fletcher bought the Union Cordial Factory in Koroit Street, Warrnambool that was previously owned by John Davis. Fletcher operated the factory as J Fletcher, John Fletcher and Fletcher’s. He eventually sold his business and stock in 1930 to Ralph Reeves, who may have continued using Fletcher’s supply of drink containers before renewing them with stock showing his own brand. The soda syphon is representative of drink containers used in the later 19th and early 20th century. It also represents the system of returnable, recyclable containers. Soda syphon (or siphon). Glass bottle, clear, multi sided, tapered from a heavy glass base to a narrower shoulder, with glass tube at centre connected to metal pump mechanism at the top. Has elaborate frosted label for J. Fletcher of Warrnambool. Made by the British Syphon Mfg. Co. Ltd. London. Bottle remains the property of John Fletcher, Warrnambool.Metal syphon has impressed "J FLETCHER" and logo "S S" in centre of two concentric circles with text between circles "BRITISH SYPHON MFG. CO. LTD. LONDON". Etched into glass "J. FLETCHER / WARRNAMBOOL", "TRADE "[stylised] F" / MARK", "SODA WATER", "THIS SYPHON IS THE PROPERTY / OF JOHN FLETCHER / WARRNAMBOOL AND CONNOT BE / AND CONNOT BE LEGALLY USED BY OTHERS / BRITISH SYPHON CO. Manufactured Glass, brown bottle 'Penicillin Lozenges', 20thC
... Manufactured Glass, brown bottle 'Penicillin Lozenges'...A brown glass bottle with a plastic screw top... DIRECTIONS...... A brown glass bottle with a plastic screw top ...F. H. Faulding & Co was a pharmaceutical company founded in Adelaide, South Australia in 1845 by Francis Hardey Faulding 1816 – 1868, a native of Swinfleet, Yorkshire, He arrived in Sydney on the Nabob in February 1842,and travelled on the brig Dorset to Adelaide in May, where he opened a pharmacy at 5 Rundle Street in 1845.The pharmacy flourished, so he purchased a warehouse in Clarence Place in the city and transferred the manufacturing and wholesale arms of the business there. In 1861 he entered into partnership with Luther Scammell (1826–1910).a Yorkshireman, who had received medical training at Guy's Hospital, and arrived in Adelaide in 1849. Faulding died in 1868 and Scammell took over the business, however he was forced to retire in 1889 when the Bank of Adelaide threatened foreclosure after a series of failed mining and pastoral speculations. Two of his sons, Luther Robert Scammell FCS LSA ( 1858 – 1940) and William J. Scammell ( 1856 – 1928) acquired the manufacturing and wholesaling operations, and the business name, in 1888; the retail shops were sold to reduce the debt to the bank. The company expanded under the two brothers and later two sons of each became directors of the company. In June 1921 Faulding & Co. became a private company, with L.R. Scammell as chairman and managing director. He continued to run the firm's affairs until 1935.Two of the Faulding company's major innovations were the development of a process for distillation of eucalyptus oil, and the development of the test for determining the eucalyptol content of the oil. Faulding's success was founded on eucalyptus oil, which formed the basis of an antiseptic marketed as "Solyptol" (for soluble eucalyptus oil). The test became the industry standard, and the British Pharmacopoeia standard method in 1898. Other well-known products were Milk Emulsion (a pleasant alternative to cod-liver oil), Solyptol Soap, (which won a gold medal at the Franco-British Exhibition in London in 1908), Solyptol disinfectant, junket tablets, cordials, essential oils for perfumery and reagents such as Epsom salts, most produced in its factory in Thebarton The Faulding Co. built success around optimising the delivery of oral dosage form drugs.
