This suit was tailor-made for Latvian dancer, choreographer and dance teacher Vija Vetra, who lived at the Old Hall, 93-95 Bay Street, Brighton and ran a dance academy at 97 Bay Street during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Born in Riga, Latvia in 1923, at the age of sixteen Vija ran away from home in order to study classical, character and modern dance at the Vienna Academy of Music and Performing Arts. She spent several years performing on European stages. When Latvia was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1944, more than 100,000 Latvians fled, seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. Vija's sister, mother and aunt were among them, managing to join her in Vienna. The following year, all four had to flee again when the Soviets moved into Austria. Escaping to Bavaria, they spent three years in displaced person camps before emigrating to Sydney as refugees in 1948. Vija found success as a dancer in Sydney. She toured Australia and New Zealand with the Bodenwieser Ballet, formed a Latvian folk dancing group and established a dancing school. By the mid-1950s she had gained recognition as a recitalist in her own right. She developed a passion for Indian classical dance. In the late 1950s she moved to Victoria. She opened a dance school in Bay Street, Brighton, while continuing to perform on stage in productions such as the musical 'Kismet' and the ballet 'Corroboree'. In 1959 she starred in the four-part live ABC television program 'Music and Dance'. She left Australia in 1964 for a tour of the United States and Canada, ultimately settling in New York City. Interviewed in the 'ABC Weekly' in 1957, Vetra described her taste in clothing as minimalist, saying she preferred to own as few clothes as possible to save the trouble of deciding what to wear: "And no bows or extravagances, but always a simple line."Two-piece women's suit made of maroon corded silk; comprising fitted jacket (.1) and straight skirt (.2). This bottling of Wodonga Centenary Port was provided by Morris Wines of Rutherglen to celebrate the Centenary of local government in Wodonga. Wodonga Shire was created in 1876 when the colonial government agreed to ratepayers' petitions to have their northern area severed from the Yackandandah Shire and form a new municipality. In 1976 celebrations were held to mark this milestone. These bottles were donated to the Wodonga & District Historical by Jenny Brown nee Terrill daughter of former Wodonga Shire President, Councillor J. A. Terrill. These shoes which would have been a child's first shoes are soft leather and possibly date from around the late 19th or early 20th century. We have no knowledge unfortunately as to whom they may have belonged. Baby's first shoes are often kept as a keepsake .These little shoes have significance from a social and historic viewpoint. A pair of leather maroon shoes with front straps which fasten in the front with a button. The inside of the shoes is cream in colour. The upper leather is quite soft . Orbost and East Gippsland Railway League had proposed a railway extension through East Gippsland in 1908, which aimed to develop an isolated part of the country. At the time, construction of a railway could be considered a beneficial investment for the country as it could increase the population in the region. The proposed railway length in 1908 was about 140 miles and the cost was estimated £800,000. The line was proposed to proceed from Bairnsdale by way of the Lower Nicholson to Bruthen. “After crossing the Tambo River, it would be carried to near Nowa Nowa; the head of Lake Tyers, forward to Orbost. From Orbost it would proceed in a north-easterly way to the New South Wales border. There were different suggested routes between Orbost and the New South Wales border, the first was through Bendoc, another by the Cann River and another which is located between these two. This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry. Because of the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August, 1987. This dress belonged to Brighton resident Isabell Nora "Billie" Blair, nee McNamara (1895-1989). Born in Mirboo North, Billie lost her mother Catherine at a young age in 1898 and was raised mostly by Catherine's sister, Isabell Frances Vallender. She married magistrate Douglas Granville Blair (1893-1976) in 1926. The couple lived first in Benalla, where their daughter Katherine Blair was born, before moving to Brighton, where they lived the rest of their lives.Mid-length velvet and chiffon dress with shallow v-neck. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. Following the death of his only child Mervin on 23 December 1916 at Magdhaba Egypt, Mr Justice Higgins HB has a small number, possibly as few as six, of memorial books made. He sought permission from Signaller JC Campbell to use a selection of photographs taken at Gallipoli and Egypt. The photographs together with typed copies of several letters written by Captain MB Higgins 8th ALH make up the book. It seems likely this copy of the book was given to the 8th Light Horse Association for safe keeping. Following the closure of the Association the last secretary Mr Matthew Maynes entrusted the book to a relative Mrs Baily to be donated to the 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles.This is a rare, historic and artistic example of how one family sought to come to terms with the loss of their only child in the Great War 1914-1918.Leather bound album of 44 leaves containing collection of photographs taken by Signaller JC Campbell and typescripts of two letters written by Captain Mervin Higgins 8th Australian Light Horse AIF during WWI. The King's Colour was presented to 8th Light Horse in 1904 for service in South Africa. It, together with the 1920 Colour, was laid up in the Anglican Church Benalla. Original ship - 11,741 gross tons. 589' x 70' x 30' (179.5 x 21.34 x 9.14m). Oil tanker built by Eriksberg Motor Vessels at Gottenburg, Sweden in 1951 for Hjalmar Bjorge of Norway as the Storheim. Purchased November 1964 and renamed R W MILLER. Had a crew of 39 seamen, including the officers. 1973 sold to Independent Shipping Company Pty Ltd of Singapore. Renamed Cherry Victor. Scrapped 1979. Robert Miller traded under the name R W Miller and Company from early 1912. One of Miller's first contracts was to pick up overburden and spoil from the sinking of the Balmain Colliery shaft and dump it at sea. Miller saw the opportunity to sell this material and he ended up getting a sixpence a ton from a local council and other contractors for use as road bases and building foundations. This close association with coal led to Robert W Miller on 15th January 1913 being given the contract for coal distribution from Sydney Harbour Colliery (Balmain mine). So began a long association with coal. Miller built a fleet of lighters that were used to transport blue metal, sand and coal around Sydney Harbour. This introduction into coal transport opened a prospect for him to enter the larger coal shipping transport. MILLERS CANOPUS As Merchant Knight (1952-63), Millers Canopus (1963-66), Lsoo Vung Tau (1966-?). In late 1963 Roderick W. Miller, with Commonwealth Government approval, purchased this tanker in Japan to enter the petroleum transport trade in opposition to overseas interests. Extensive modifications at Singapore ship yards upgraded the ship's facilities to meet Australian Seamen's standards. Renamed Millers Canopus, and had a crew of 42 seamen, including the officers. Sold mid 1966 to the Luzon Stevedoring Co Phillipines. Renamed Lsoo Vung Tau. Harriet Frances Wicken, 1847_ 1937 was a cookery lecturer and demonstrator in London and published her first book " Kingswood Cookery Book" in 1885. She migrated to Australia in 1886 and gave cookery classes at Warrnambool. Over the ensuing years she worked as a Technical Teacher in Sydney and published a number of books on cookery and domestic economy and housekeeping.The author is one of reknown in her field and spent a period of time in Warrnambool. The contents of the book show methods of cooking and typical fish dishes of the time.Small, hardcover book, cream with regency style pattern printed in grey. Spine bound in watermarked maroon. Hilda Elizabeth Foster (1890-1982) was commissioned as a Deaconess in 1914 giving a lifetime of service to the church particularly in the social care aspect of the Gospel. She was also a double certified nurse. Deaconess Hilda Foster began her work as a Deaconess in South Melbourne and then served for 13 years with the Presbyterian Sisterhood in North Fitzroy caring for unmarried mothers and their babies. In 1933 she was appointed Matron of the Presbyterian Girls' Home in Elsternwick where she worked for 15 years. She retired in 1948 when it was noted "In complete dedication matron has given herself to this care of souls". Deaconess Foster was awarded the British Empire Medal for her work in the Queen's birthday honours in 1981. Deaconess Foster was one of the first qualified Mother Christmasses in Australia.
