"Dennys, Lascelles Limited 1857-1957 Annual Wool Report and Centenary Review". Apart from the annual report, this booklet also contains a brief history of Dennys, Lascelles Limited from its founding in 1857 up to 1957. A copy of both the ‘Dennys Lascelles Limited 1857-1957: Annual Wool Report & Centenary Review’ & ‘Staff Reunion Souvenir Programme, 1988’ was donated to the museum in 2021. These were duplicate items so only their story was retained in addition to the image of Rita located in Multimedia. “Enclose two items which may be of interest to add to your collection. They belonged to my mother, Rita Sedgwick (nee Glenn), who died earlier this year in April. She worked for Dennys Lascelles in two separate periods. First as a young girl, who had finished her schooling, at Morongo Presbyterian ladies College, having been sent as boarder there by her parents from their farm at Mathoura (just north of Echuca). This period was from 1942 — 1947. It was her second job out of school having worked first at the then Geelong Telephone Exchange. She would commute daily to work on a bicycle from where she was then living in Drumcondra. She had the front office role of receptionist and telephonist driving an old manual switchboard. The old front desk was her domain. She departed in 1947, shortly after she was married in late 1946. She spoke fondly of her times at the company as a young girl in her late teens and early twenties. Her second stint was much later, but again as the front-desk telephonist and receptionist commencing in 1972, ending 11 years later in 1983. This was a period when Sir Henry Bolte was on the Board, Don Urqhuart was MD, Ray Hobson was General Manger, Cliff Bone the company Secretary, Peter Keys the CFO and Jim Hay was also on the Executive team. While there were some 25 years between her periods of service, she welcomed the chance to re-join the company. Again, it was a time of hard work, and good friends. The busy times were the wool auctions, when the Firm would be visited by representatives of the big Japanese trading houses such as Mitsui, and Kanematsu. The Chief Auctioneer, Mr. Reeves (I can't recall his first name), would hold court at the now demolished Geelong Wool Exchange — I saw him in action once — what a sight. The huge show floors in the Denny's building would be full of open bales and samples for the buyers to inspect, and for mum days would start at 0800, and finish at 1800 or later. In quieter times over summer, it was reported that the empty show floor would provide an excellent arena for the more enthusiastic cricketers to get in a bit of practise with a tennis ball at lunch and after closing time! Dennys was a full-service firm for wool growers, with branches all over the Western Districts as far afield as Mt Gambier, but through Timboon, Warrnambool, and the like, as I am sure you are aware. She also saw the merger of Dennys and Strachan to create DSM, and later the amalgamation with AML&F to create Dennys AML (I think). She saw the change from the old manual switch board to the then latest of PABX technologies and was part of the team the relocated from the original offices to the new address on the south side of Brougham Street. Along with the shift from the large show floor-based sales of the past. She retired from fulltime work in mid-1983, again with fond memories and friendships that lasted a lifetime. I found these two items among her things recently, and felt that given her connection to the industry, and the place in which the Museum now resides you may like to add them to the collection. Max COWARD ( -1991) Born Ballarat Max Coward was training to be an art teacher at the Ballarat Technical Art School from 1937 to 1941. He enlisted in the A.I.F. and was a Naval Trainee at Flinders Naval Depot in 1941. During these years Max Coward was described as a cartoonist and illustrator, and was attached to the Naval Intelligence Division in 1945, producing stories and drawings for the Navy newspaper Dit. His work was reproduced in the Christmas annual, HMAS Mk IV and the Army educational journal, Salt. Coward was active as a printmaker in the 1970s. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Max COWARD ( -1991) Born Ballarat Max Coward was training to be an art teacher at the Ballarat Technical Art School from 1937 to 1941. He was a foundation staff member at the Burwood Teachers' College art department when it opened at Box Hill in 1954, transferring to the Burwood Campus in 1955. Upon his retirement he moved to Queensland to start a graphic arts consultancy. Coward was active as a printmaker during the 1970s. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Framed limited edition linocut by Max Coward. 'Hen Party' uses simplified forms reminiscent of the shapes gracing 'moderne' interiors of the 1950s and 1960s. Ewan ROSS Ewen Ross grew in the Wimmera and aims to manifest the changing nature of this landscape in his work. This region is affectionately known as the land of the big sky and it is from this viewpoint looking down and across, which inspires his sense of image making. Occasionally he refers to stories that occurred from times past but generally these images reflect the current state of this land. From 1976 to 1978 Ewan Ross undertook a Diploma of Art (Painting) at Ballarat College of Advanced Education (now Federation University. He was awarded a Graduate Diploma of Education in 1982. He was a Curatorial Assistant at the Art Gallery of Ballarat from 1979 to 1981, and taught Art at Horsham Technical School between 1983 and 1985. From 1986-1897 Ewan Ross taught at the Wimmera Institute of TAFE, and was Lecturer in Painting & Printmaking at the University of Ballarat (nor Federation University from 1998-2005. In 2008 Ewan Ross was a finalist in the Fleurieu Biennale Art Prize. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Seacombe House Formerly named The Stag Cnr Sackville and Cox Streets Port Fairy John Sanders (Saunders) first came to Port Fairy in charge of the "Sally Ann" owned by the Henty family of Portland. He left the sea behind in 1844 and established the "Sally Ann Inn" named for his old ship, on the site of the present day Star of the West hotel. After selling the Sally Ann Inn to John Taylor he acquired the land on the South west corner of Sackville Street and erected a detached cottage facing Sackville Street for which he obtained a licence to sell alcohol and named the premises The Stag Inn. He died in 1850 and his wife leased the Inn to John Mason. By 1852 a large two story rendered bluestone building had been constructed on the corner site. The second un rendered section was probably added in 1854. Abijah John Brown became licencee in 1855 and made the Stag the centre of entertainment for the district, with many balls, dinners and concerts taking place there. It boasted "a billiard room and a twenty stall stables and coach house". By 1861 Abijah Brown had left The Stag and Lennox Trew was now owner and licencee. It came up for sale in 1869 but failed to sell. After Trew's death in 1886 it was sold to a syndicate and opened as a boarding school. It later became a Coffee Palace and Accomodation house named Seacombe House, and in the 1950's a motel was built on the old stable site. It is still a Hotel Motel and a restaurant which has revived the old name of "The Stag". This was the home of 3 generations of the Coop family: 1. Josephine and George Frank Coop (noted in Box Hill Rate Books for 1947-1954). 2. George Burton Coop (1906-1960) and his family. He was Assistant Chief Architect of Victoria in the Public Works Department (P.W.D.) George Burton Coop was born in c1906 in Williamstown, the son of Josephine Vistarini and George Frank Coop. He married Winifred Alice Trewartha in 1936 and they are listed in the electoral rolls at 688 Whitehorse Road in 1937. George died 3/4/1960, aged 54 years at Mont Albert. 3. George Burton and Alice Coop had 2 children: George Lister Coop - born St Georges Hospital, 8/10/1937 Alison - born c1945. The donor George Lister Coop informed that he initially attended Chatham State School because his first home was the Spanish Mission style flats at 346 Whitehorse Road, opposite Brenbeal Street, Balwyn. When his grandparents died, the family moved to 688 Whitehorse Road and he then attended Mont Albert Central School. The California bungalow style of housing was the dominant style of housing built in the interwar period through the northern parts of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert as formerly semi-rural land was subdivided for new housing. It was relatively inexpensive and affordable. In Australia the Californian bungalow drew upon elements that were popular across the United States from around 1910 to 1939. In Australia the style became popular from 1913. In Melbourne both timber and red brick were used as the main building material. Typically they are one or one and a half story houses and feature sloping roofs and eaves with unenclosed rafters and often a feature a dormer window (or an attic vent designed to look like one) over the main portion of the house. It is of a Californian bungalow with a driveway that extends through a carport, attached and roofed as part of the house, to the rear of the property. The veranda is accessed from under this covered area. The veranda and carport are supported by brick pillars and the veranda balustrades between are plain with an occasional wider feature panel. The front door is in shadow. There are rolled up striped canvas blinds on the veranda and at least 2 cane chairs. The main structure of the house is weatherboard with a terracotta tiled roof. There is a flower bed across the front of the house with an elevated brick flower box under the main window. Max COWARD ( -1991) Born Ballarat Maxwell (Max) Maurice Coward was training to be an art teacher at the Ballarat Technical Art School from 1937 to 1941. He enlisted in the A.I.F. and was a Naval Trainee at Flinders Naval Depot in 1941. During these years Max Coward was described as a cartoonist and illustrator, and was attached to the Naval Intelligence Division in 1945, producing stories and drawings for the Navy newspaper Dit. His work was reproduced in the Christmas annual, HMAS Mk IV and the Army educational journal, Salt. Coward was active as a printmaker in the 1970s. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Milan Kovicic (previously instructing in Italy for 11 years) and Toni St. Elmo are instructing at the Nissen Ski School Page 13 - Toni & Skippy St. Elmo's Tow House canteen sells every provision a skier could ever want - hot meals, groceries, toilet and first-aid gear, stationery - even souvenirs. Page 20 - Falls Creek in Spring - Bogong Ski Club reports improvements in their facilities as well as around Falls Creek. Their lodge has been repainted and refurnische. The SEC has begun to allow private car convoys to travel to Howman's at set times. Regular trains are available from Melbourne connect with Hoy's Bus at Wangaratta. Overnight accommodation and parking can be arranged at Tawonga. The Tow House now provides two tows and food supplies. Snow conditions were lending themselves to a bumper year ahead. Members of other clubs could apply to stay at Bogong Ski Club at an overnight fee of 10/- for Melbourne clubs amd 8/- for N.E.D.S.A. Falls Creek Historical SocietyJournal - Schuss Vol. 17. No. 8 August 1951
Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski industry in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this issue include:- Page 304 - A meeting held at Bogong to which all clubs with Permissive Occupancies in Falls Creek were invited has agreed to form an Advisory Council. This body would be known as the "Falls Creek Alpine Village Advisory Committee. Each club was to have one representative and one vote. Suggested matters to be dealt with by the Committee included (a) Development of the village, (b) General Conduct and (c) Safety.
