Newspaper clipping from The Courier, 31 July 2001, Eureka Column, page 3, written by David Ellery about a swan who paused in the middle of the tram track and held up the Museum tram service. The swan would not move, until coaxed by a cream biscuit from a passing school boy. Reported by a conductor (thought to be Austin Brehaut) to the columnist. Leesplankjes were first created in the last decade of the 19th century and continued to be created in a number of variations until the 1950's. Separate editions were used for Dutch populations abroad, e.g., the Dutch East Indies.Every Dutch primary school child would have been familiar with these boards and letters. A number of variations existed depending on the particular area in The Netherlands where the school was. There were distinctive boards for e.g., South Africa and Dutch East Indies.a) Reading Board - an aid to lelarning to read. b ) A small round tin containing the necessary letters to build the words shown and illustrated on "leesplankjes" or reading boards. Fan was made for Mary Jane Schroder for her marriage to Ralph Pardy Rudd on 24th Nov 1886 in Ceylon. Later carried by three family members at weddings during 1941 by Mrs Kathleen Hubbert then Mrs Mary Barry in 1947 and finally by Sharlene Barry, now Mrs Ron Draeger.1886 bamboo fan mounted with white feathers. Spray of artificial flowers and cream satin ribbon tied in bows and wound round the bamboo handle. Back of fan has circle of boa to conceal joins of white feathers.
