A rare photograph of massed Light Horse in Victoria shortly before mechanisation consigned the horse to history.Black and white photograph of large group of horsemen in ranks waiting in the process of watering horses at a lagoon. One copy of the image claims it to be 8th Light Horse Regiment watering horses at a Murray River lagoon, South Corowa NSW, September 1939; Wahgunyah Troop, C Squadron - this side of lagoon, Lieutenant J. Nott on grey horse in water. A second copy (Cat No 0690) asserts it is 4 regiments of light horse being 8th, 13th, 20th and 4th watering horses near Torquay Victoria, March 1940.On a label on reverse of 0690: "Picture taken about March 1940 when the 13th Light Horse from Gippsland, the 8th Light Horse from Upper Murray, the 4th Light Horse from the Western Districts and the 20th Light Horse from the Goulburn Valley were in camp near Torquay. Mr Cappur Webb of Glendoxey, Seymour, a member of the 20th said the picture must have been taken during and exercise about five miles north of Torquay. “We used to water our horses in that lake”, he said."

These two important books are part of a series produced in the 1880s but they have widely-different content. One describes the natural history of the Parish of Selborne in the County of Hampshire in England. It was written by the British naturalist and ornithologist, Gilbert White and first published in 1789. Since that time it has been republished over 300 times right up to the present day. It is notable for its charm and simplicity and for its description of a pre-industrial England. The other is by the American author, Walt Whitman, first published in 1871. It is a major work of comparative politics and expounds on the influence of the Louisiana Purchase and the expansion of the American spirit and character. It also denounces the post-Civil War materialism that had spread at that time in America. These books are of interest because of their antiquarian nature but they are mostly of local Warrnambool interest because of their inscriptions. The books belonged to William Hugh McMahon (1862-1936). William McMahon commenced a legal practice in Warrnambool in 1894, firstly in Liebig Street and later in Kepler Street. He was a prominent lawyer in Warrnambool for 30 years and a staunch adherent of the Presbyterian Church. He and his family lived at ‘Glenrye’ at the corner of Ardlie Street and Botanic Road, a site where the St. John of God Hospital was later established. These two accompanying volumes are in the Camelot Series (1887 and 1888). They are hard cover books with red covers and two ornamental patterns on the front cover (stylized urn and fan shapes). The urn pattern is repeated on the spines. ‘The Natural History of Selborne’ has 366 pages (a Preface and Chapters on the Natural History of Selborne, a Naturalist’s Calendar and Observations on Various Branches of Natural History) and ‘Democratic Vistas’ has 175 pages (a Preface and 12 Chapters). The latter has the remains of a label stuck to the front cover. Stanley George Allen Hindhaugh (1883-1962), soldier, was born on 12 December 1883 at Camperdown, Victoria. His occupation was Station Manager. 14 April 1904 - Appointed Lieutenant 11th Light Horse Regiment Militia. 3 April 1911 - Promoted to Captain in the Militia. 20 August 1914 - Appointed to the Australian Imperial Forces to A Squadron, 4th Light Horse Regiment at Broadmeadows camp. 19 October 1914 - Embarked for the Middle East from Melbourne with the 4th Light Horse Regiment per Tranport A18 "Wiltshire". 11 December 1914 - Disembarked at Alexandria for camp Mena. 19 May 1915 - Promoted to Major. From 22 May 1915 - On operations at Gallipoli. 6 August 1915 - Noted in the fierce engagement at Leane's Post. 19 August 1915 - Appointed Second in Command 4th Light Horse Regiment. December 1915 - To camp at Tel El Kebir. January 1916 - Acting CO 4th Light Horse Regiment. 21 March 1916 - Embarked Alexandria per "Cestrian" for Marseilles with B Squadron 4th Light Horse Regiment for operations in France and Flanders. 16 February 1917 - Promoted to Lt Colonel. March 1918 - In action at Passchendaele - Awarded Belgian Croix de Guerre. 7 December 1918 - To 2nd Light Horse Regiment. 2nd ANZAC Mounted Regiment. 15 May 1919 - Returned to Australia. 11 October 1919 - Transferred to Reserve of Officers. 1932 - Commanded 20th Light Horse Regiment. 1934 - Commanded 11th Light Horse Regiment. 15 November 1941 - Retired. Printed Doctor's Certificate, dated Apr 4th 1866, certifying that Hugh Brown was unable to follow his employment. Signed by H. L. Atkinson. Printed by Bro. Clarke, Printer, Moor Street, FitzRoy. Glued to the Certificate is a note to the Court from Hugh Brown, dated Apr 4th/66 claiming the Sick Allowance of the Court. The third piece of paper, dated Apr 10th 1866 declaring himself off the Sick Fund of the Court as he was able to follow his employment. The Historically listed Goldmines Hotel is situated opposite the Victoria Diggings site. It was designed by the Bendigo firm of Vahland and Getzchmann for David Chaplin who built the hotel in 1872.Coloured brochure produced by McKean McGregor real estate agency for the sale of the Gold Mines Hotel. Arthur Henry Miers, pictured in the photograph played for cricket, football and baseball teams in Kew for a number of decades in the first half of the twentieth century. He was born on 22 November 1901, the son of Rodolph Theophilus Miers (1874-1951) and Margaret Frances (Margaretta) Fry (1875-1958). He had two brothers, Rodolph Cecil Miers (1904-80) and Charles Wilfred Miers (1906-88), and a sister Marjorie Elizabeth Miers (1911-84). Proceeds to charity. The 1974 catalogue states, "We are grateful to the late Dick Ovenden for his inspiration to hold an annual Art Competition with emphasis on the local environment. Entries this year have exceeded our expectations to an extent that late entries could not be accepted. The late Dick Ovenden suggested a competition for the best painting of Local Environment. We have donated $200 as the prize and the picture becomes the property of the Zone, and several Honourable Mentions to be selected by Sir William Dargie. The Artists select their Competition entries. Zone Lions clubs of Bennettswood, Box Hill, Forest Hill, Nunawading, Ringwood and Vermont are appreciative of support from the artists and thank the public for its continued interest."
