Copy of a newspaper article titled Fading Scene. Photo shows a building with a stairway leading down to the road in front of it and a lady standing in the doorway. One window has Cash Store printed on it and there are two placards leaning on the building to the left of the lady. Each side of the building are shrubs and picket fence. In the background to the left is the poppet of the Windmill Hill Mine on the Garden Gully line of reef. It is in that part of Eaglehawk Rd which was once known as Backhaus St. High on the wall to the left is a street sign proclaiming it as Backhaus St. Written above the photo is C-sh, E Bryant, Gro-er (there are holes through the words), Perseverance Reef (Hotel). Document - LONG GULLY HISTORY GROUP COLLECTION: BANKNOTES AND JAMES BEVERAGE
Typed copy of what appears to be a speech. Mentioned is that after 1910 the Commonwealth took over the minting it's own money. Gold mining was chosen for the one pound note and a Bendigo scene was chosen. The scene chosen shows boring operations in the Victoria Quartz Mine. The picture was taken by Vincent Kelly of the five figures but for engraving only three were shown. They were Mr W Healy, Mr J Smith and Mr James Beverage. James Beverage was a member of Bendigo's first fire brigade. He went to Beechworth for a demonstration and on the way home stopped at Christie's Hotel in Swanston Street. There was a fire at the hotel and Mr Beverage rescued Mrs Christie, her baby and a servant. At a later date Mr Beverage saved a woman from a burning building in Moore Street in Bendigo. He received the Royal Humane Society's Medal which is now housed at the Bendigo Fire Station in Hargreaves Street. In the City's formative years the area that deposited its rain water into the Long Gully Creek was considered to be in Long Gully and for many years the Victoria Quartz Mine deposited many thousands of gallons of water into the Long Gully Creek. Photocopy of a newspaper article titled A Victorian dream-home by Richard Foord. The article is an estate agent, Craig Tweed & Co Pty Ltd, ad about a house called Kilhallen which had been in the Truscott family for four generations. The house and the building materials are described. A photo shows the back of the two story house with a small room added on at the back. On the back of the page titled Bendigo properties is a photo of a two story house with ironlace on the verandas, a tree partly obscuring the house and a single story weatherboard building beside it. An auction sale sign is on the front fence. The second photo shows an ornate fireplace with tall carving above it. Written at the top of the page is: A Truscott. Photo of Hanro Knitting Mills: On Cream card with 6cm border is a photo of the Hanro Knitting Mills building in Hargreaves Street Bendigo. Of brick construction with doors either end. Four steps lead up to the doors and 10 windows along the front facing Hargreaves Street. A path with open gutters of blue stone block runs along the front of the building.
