This photograph was taken when Julia Gillard unveiled her sculpture on 14 October 2014. Only two ex-Prime Ministers (including Gillard) have attended their own unveilings. Gillard was a lawyer before entering politics. She was the 27th Prime Minister of Australia from 2010 to 2013 and the first Australian female prime minister. Kevin Rudd successfully challenged Gillard's leadership in 2013 and he went on to lose the election. Julia Gillard resigned from parliament following the leadership challenge. Betty Borchers worked as a legal secretary. This file contains three items: 1/A newsletter for the abovementioned titled ‘Friendly Glenhuntly Road, Elsternwick’ dated September 1981. The newsletter covers topics such as Advertising for Christmas, Caulfield Council elections, shop trading hours, Caulfield High School’s Dutch auction and membership numbers. Because of the original September issue of the newsletter having gone missing in transit and the need for a replacement newsletter, a number of new items and advertising have been omitted for which an apology is offered. 2/A small round metal medallion inscribed with the words ‘Elsternwick Shoppers’ League member’ on one side with a small hole punched through at the top. Age unknown. 3/An envelope in which the medallion is held which has written on it ‘Elsternwick Shoppers’ League Member’s Medallion’ and ‘Donor M. Mr Chifley's last major public speech, made at the annual conference of the NSW Branch of the Australian Labor Party on the day before his passing away. Chifley spoke at the State Banquet at Parliament House, Canberra, on Tuesday 12 June 1951, and in the House of Representatives on the afternoon of the day that he died (13 June 1951), but those speeches were more formal. Ben Chifley was the sixteenth Prime Minister of Australia and a former railway engine driver. He was treasurer in the Curtin government and became Prime Minister after Curtain's death. He lost the 1949 and 1951 federal elections. The 1951 loss was due to his opposing Menzies' proposal to ban the Communist Party. The document was donated by Mr John Mildren, former federal member for Ballarat and former lecturer at Ballarat College of Advanced Education.Rare. Significant to the history of the Labor Party and to political commentary in Australia. He worked for the railways as an engineering employee and was long-term trade unionist (Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Australian Railways Union) and ALP member; he lived and worked in the Ballarat area. Norm was active in workplace disputes during the ALP split in 1955. He was a long time supporter of Ballarat Trades Hall. Simon Crean served as President of the ACTU - 1985-1990. He served as a member of federal parliament - 1990-2013 - holding various cabinet posts. He retired at the 2013 election. Betty Borchers worked as a legal secretary. Some highlights include: 27/7/1992 Mr Ian Moore reported where possible a volunteer driver will be provided to transport members to and from day centres. His leadership was successfully challenged by Julia Gillard. He contested Gillard's leadership in 2013 but subsequently lost the federal election. He left parliament after the ALP government was defeated by the Abbott Coalition. Norm Borchers passed away in 2008. Borchers was a Club President of the Sebastopol Lions Club (1975-76). Photograph: John Lenders and others at fundraising tea for Sharon Knight John Lenders served in the legislative assembly and legislative council in the period 1999 to 2014. He served in the cabinet, as Minister of Education and Treasurer in the Bracks and Brumby governments. He was appointed leader of government in the legislative council whilst the ALP were in power. John Lenders retired from politics in 2014. At the time the picture was taken, he was Victorian State Treasurer. There are other people in the photograph who have not been identified. There is a calico bag in the foreground that has the slogan, "Park smart: lock it, remove it or lose it" with a picture of a padlock and a Victorian Government logo. The gathering was to raise funds for Sharon Knight's state election campaign. Knight was successor to Karen Overington. Knight is now the state member for Wendouree. She has a background in health and community sectors, including having managed Lifeline in Ballarat. Prime Minister Bob Hawke had a strong trade union leadership background. A member of the Australian Labor Party, he became Prime Minister after only two years in Parliament, serving in that role from 1983 til 1991. He established an "Accord" between Government, business and unions. After winning four elections he lost a caucus ballot in favour of his treasurer, Paul Keating. Sculptor Peter Nicholson was born in Melbourne in 1946. He become known for his cartoons, and in 1985 the "Rubbery Figures" TV puppets. When sculpting the busts, of Bob Hawke, Paul Keating, John Howard and Kevin Rudd he has imparted an expression of the character of the individual This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection.
