Believed to have been owned originally by Alice and Arthur Fisher who had a 16 acre property in Mullum Mullum Road, Ringwood. The house was called Greenhill and was located at the highest point, now no. 28. They had a mixed farm including an orchard of fruit and nut trees, and a dairy cow. Alice milked the cow much to the amusement of her English family, who delighted in visiting. When the property was sold the butter churn went to Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. Arthur Lunt, donor has memories of its use in Red Hill, where his parents had a mixed farm. That property was sold c. 1950, and the butter Churn returned to the Ringwood Croydon area where it has remained unused for the last 65 years.|The butter churn has been in Croydon and Ringwood since 1952; it is typical of manually operated equipment in use on small properties 100 years ago.Cylindrical container, brown, mounted on board with handle underneath. This linoleum is in-situ in one of the rooms of the house at Days Mill. Newspaper laid underneath indicates the linoleum was laid after September 1910.PATTERNED LINOLEUM : A floor covering made from materials such as solidified linseed oil (linoxyn), pine rosin, ground cork dust, wood flour, and mineral fillers such as calcium carbonate, most commonly on a burlap or canvas backing. This piece has a cream & light grey mosaic type background with circular brown leaf repeating patterns interlaced into four square blue shapes. Central star pattern within circular leaf pattern in light & dark blues & browns. Stylised floral motif in between each circular & square shaped pattern repeats.

This mug was found in an above ground rubbish pile at the rear of the house and mill that was dismantled in 2019. The rubbish pile contained many previously discarded items dating from approximately 1880's to 1980. Luigi Gervasoni was born in San Gallo, Lombardy, Italy. He arrived in Australia in 1863 and was part of a co=operative to farm and build the old stone house at Yandoit Creek. The land photographed is widely known as Nethercotes. In 1920 Arthur Nethercote, import agent, bought the land which was situated in Boronia Road near Dandenong Creek. Originally a flower farm, the Nethercotes became poultry farmers. The property contained a five-roomed weatherboard house which they called Weston Favell. Dated before 1883 (from newspapers found in the ceiling) it is the more dilapidated house photographed. The other house called Greenways was built for a son. Gerald Letts bought the property and when he died the Board of Works purchased the land, intending to use it as part of the proposed Healesville Freeway, meanwhile the property was leased to the Box Hill Institute's equine department. The museum houses an extensive collection. It provides educational programmes for schools and other groups. There is a unique collection of 19th century guild banners representing Weavers, the Shoemakers, and the Carpenters. Trade banners also represent the Brick and Stonemasons, Farm Labourers and the Boyne Fishermen. The Old Drogheda Society founded in 1964 by a group of concerned citizens for the preservation of Drogheda's historical monuments and the collection and recording of historical material relating to the town and surrounding area established the award winning museum. The Museum was opened in 1974 and in 2013 achieved full accreditation by the Heritage Council.

The Watts family bought the dairy at 20 Albert St. in 1929 and increased the business from one to seven carts. From Albert St. they moved to Rialway Parade. The tenant lived at the mercy of the resident landlord. Home was a one-roomed house, a chimney of wicker work plastered over with mud or just a hole in the roof. The walls might consist of mud too, or sods of grass. Any windows, were rarely glazed and would be open to the elements all year round. The Pig, if any, was kept in the house, the most valuable possession. Sold for cash at local market. The main items in the house were a potato pot and water bucket. As well as mother, father and children, there could well be grandparents all living in the same cramped conditions. The family would sleep on rushes or straw lain on the floor. Most tenants were tenants 'at will ', which meant they could be evicted at the 'will' of the landlord. Some had a lease for the life of the father and the eldest son, and this meant they were relatively safe from eviction as long as they could pay their rent. There was a tradition of passing on a portion of your land from father to each of the sons, who would build a small dwelling, and in turn pass a portion onto their own sons. This cycle of subdivision meant that many families were surviving on a tiny plot of land from which to derive a crop of potatoes for the year. Women worked hard in this environment, rearing children, cooking, cleaning, tending to any animals such a pigs or chicken and when needed, helping in the potato field. Life was dictated by the annual rent due to the landlord. Other typical expenses could be the Hearth Tax (actually charged by the number of fire places in a house) Turf, Hay (for any farm animals) and tithes. A tax known as the tithes were calculated at one tenth the value of everything saleable. Tithes were a bitter issue. They were for the support of the Church of Ireland, Protestant Bishops and Ministers, and a cess tax for the construction and maintenance of Protestant Church buildings. The problem being that the vast majority of those paying the Tax were Catholic and paying to support something that was contrary to their beliefs. Potatoes were the staple diet from September through to the end of Spring of the following year. But the summer months were months of hunger and hardship as they waited for the following harvest to come in Autumn. During these months people had to resort to eating anything they could find; turnips, cabbage, even wild grass, nettles, wild berries and dandelions. Those who lived close to the sea would collect seaweed and use it spread on their land as a form of manure. The dependency of so much of the population on the Potato as their sole source of food was to prove disastrous during the Famine years. Before 1941 "Hillside", McCartney's Road was associated with the Carroll Family. Patrick Edmund Carroll, his wife Mary Matilda Fitzgerald, and children Kathleen, Ronald and Rosemary were the last members of the family to live at and work "Hillside". Stanislaus Kelly and his wife Margaret (nee Gorman) bought the farm from the Carroll family. The couple raised six children on the land: May, Mary, Leo, Ray (Lofty), Daniel (Tich) and Bernadette. The family grew spuds and onions on the hill and milked cows, with the little dairy located on the eastern side of the house. Harry Walker's property would have been run by his son William in 1922. When the CRB Road cut through the property William planted plum trees on the opposite side. These are visible in this photo. An extensive raspberry crop is in the foreground. The building over the road on the left hand side is the corn and produce store built by Edward John Price (son of Edward Joseph Price) to capitalise on the CRB Road cutting through the Price farm. Erith Lane would have been named after Eliza Erith, the wife of Thomas Hand of Mountain Grange. The house made of slabs and bark pictured (centre) is where the family lived before Mountain Grange was built. Mabel Hand, Thomas and Eliza's youngest daughter stated that she was born in the bark hut in 1881 and they moved into the new home the same year. Cherry Farm, the roof visible behind the centre building, was the home of William Hand, son of Thomas and Eliza. Most likely a scene of 'Mt Calvin', the homestead built by John William (Willie) Richardson for his wife Jeanie Green of Wandin. The house was built c1898 The Rowse family purchased the house and 60 acres when Willie and Jeanie Richardson with their 3 children moved to Brisbane. The Rowse family farmed the 60 acres for 35 years and the house was demolished in 1938. The photograph is from the album of Ivy May Child. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. Braco Park Guest House was owned by the aunts of Sir Keith Murdoch, Eliza and Grace. It became a Red Cross convalescent Home for nurses in 1918.It was sold to Mrs. Techow and renamed "Clovelly" in 1920. It had been the Murdoch sisters' guest house, Braco Park, that originally introduced Prime Minister Billy Hughes to the hills. Walter Murdoch's nephew Keith Murdoch, a young parliamentary reporter for the Age, took Hughes and several other politicians up there before the war. Keith's father had been a friend of the previous PM, Andrew Fisher. Keith Murdoch was sent to London as a reporter in 1915, and developed an influential relationship with Hughes who bought a small farm in Sassafras, and ran some of the business of government there during the war and after. Acquired by The Education Department about 1985, the Sherbrooke Community School was built, with the Clovelly house being stripped back to its frame and renovated to form the main building of the school. William 'Lauchie' McGrath, an accountant with Australian Mercantile Land & Finance (AML&F), enlisted in AIF in September 1914. He was posted to 8th Light Horse regiment with the No 268 and rank of trooper. He rose through the ranks, serving at Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine reachin the rank of Captain/Adjutant of the regiment. The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The 8th Light Horse AIF was disbanded in 1919, but soon after re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. McGrath wrote the History of the regiment (See 3091.901) Following his return to Australia he took up farming in the Upper Murray, On 10 February 1924, a community picnic was being held at a creek below his Jingellic homestead when a maniac armed with a rifle came out of the scrub and proceeded to shoot indiscriminately int the party. No reason was ever given but it was presumed that he wanted to kill one man who was not among the five he hit. McGrath got the women and children into the creek and organised the other wounded - he had already been hit in the chest - into cover before running over open ground for his rifle in the house. In all he stopped five bullets but the gunman bolted once McGrath appeared with his own weapon.Some weeks later he was captured getting milk from a dairy and declared insane. One of the five victims died that day, one some months later, one had to use a stick for the rest of his life and McGrath was forced to give up the farm and return to his old job as an accountant. He was awarded the silver medal of the Royal Humane Society of NSW and the silver medal of the Royal Shipwreck Relief & Humane Society of NSW. The latter body felt the water in the creek made it appropriate to also make the award. McGrath enlisted again in World War Two, serving firstly as 2/ic Broadmeadows Camp and later 2/ic the Officer Commanding 12th Garrison Battalion. B&W photo shows siblings Percy and Cissie (Minnie Agnes) Johns on the verandah of their home, Glen Park Farm, Selby. Percy looks in his early teens, making the photo around 1910 or later. He is wearing a long-sleeved pale shirt, long dark trousers tucked into knee-high boots, and possibly a dark hat. Cissie is wearing a pale, knee-length dress, dark stockings, and a pale, wide-brimmed hat. She is aged about 10. A medium sized dark dog sits at Percy's feet. The house is an L-shaped weatherboard with two gables at right-angles and a verandah with a bullnosed roof, ornate support posts, and a striped end piece from the roof. Wooden steps lead down from side. There is a large brick chimney where the two wings meet, and a metal water tank to the side. There are large trees, both in leaf and dead, plus some flowers near the verandah.

A letter dated 8th February 1943 from F H Adams of Factory Road Yarragon, to apply for the position of housemaster of the Legacy Hostel. He served for 12 years in the regular army and attained the rank of Captain. Serving part time in the V.D.C. as Battalion Commander. He mentions recent work on his brother-in-law's dairy farm while he was serving in the A.I.F. but now returned with injuries meaning the farm would be sold. His wife served as a nurse in WWI and is capable of teaching cooking, dressmaking and piano playing. They have one son currently 11 years old. A second letter dated 18 February 1943, from F.H.
