Tram has destination of Gardens, with four crew/inspector in uniforms, a number of well dressed passengers including ladies and children and some boys at the rear. Shows arrangements of steps lining etc. In the background is the Bucks Head Hotel, a Confectioner (J.M. Kiln?) and other buildings. Photo taken in 1905. Cap Badge for the "Chief Inspector". Made from cast brass to indicate the position held by the wearer on their cap as part of their uniform. Cast in the form of the handwritten or script word/s and underlined. On the rear, silver soldered on are two brass loops at either side of the badge to enable to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap. On the back of the back of the badge in very small letters is the name of the manufacturer - Stokes & Sons / Melbourne. Used by the SEC only? Cable tram has four uniformed personnel on board, including an Inspector who appears to be doing a ticket check. The conductor can be seen at the back of the tram behind the person peering out. The bogie trailer (483) is one that was spliced together from two six window horse trams. Grip Car No. 423 - can be read on the front right hand pillar. In July 1862, Victoria’s out-going Inspector of Fisheries and Oyster Beds, James Putwain, wrote a report of his observations of the colony’s commercial fisheries to deputy premier Charles Duffy. Irish-born Duffy was the Commissioner for Public Works, President of the Board of Land and Works, and Commissioner for Crown Lands and Survey, later to become Premier of Victoria. Reckoned to be of public interest, Putwain’s report was published in the Lands Circular of the day. Apart from its general historical interest in describing the fishes, fishing gear and boats of the time, this report remarks on the vulnerability of commercial fishermen to market wholesalers. It also comments on the particular role of Chinese, both as fishermen and as a discrete section of the fish-buying community at the time. The inaugural meeting of the Ballarat Mathematical Association was held at St Patrick's College on 12 July 1967, in the presence of visitors Solway Love and the Australian Broadcasting Commission. The Ballarat organisation was a newly formed branch of the Mathematical Association of Victoria. The first committee of the Ballarat Branch were Miss I.H. Moore, (President) D. Scoltock (secretary), Brother Stanley, J.W. Netherway, D. Bremner, Sister Agnes (St Martin's in the Pines), Miss I. Tabaco (Ballarat High School) and Mother Michelle. The second meeting was held on 03 September 1967 and included a talk by Clive Keating, Inspector of Schools and President of the Mathematical Association of Victoria. The next guest speaker was Mr McLaren who spoke on Patterns in Mathematics forms I to IV.A harcovered ledger with leather spine containing minutes of the Ballarat Mathematical Association. Many of the attendees were nuns and brothers. The first meeting includes notes on a talk by I.H. Leonard Vivian Lansell ( 16/10/1888-31/10/1963) was the son of mining magnate, George Lansell. He married Geraldine Orme in 1911. She was the daughter of a NSW grazier. Leonard was very active in Bendigo affairs, including President of the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum, the Bendigo Chamber of Commerce, The School of Mines and the Bendigo Art Gallery. He was also on the board of directors of several mines. As well as his Bendigo commitments, Leonard and Geraldine also ran the "Chah Singh" Station, near Moulamein, NSW. Resulting from this, he was appointed a pastoral inspector in 1929. After retiring to Toorak, the family was heavily involved in the Melbourne social scene. Although Leonard died in Toorak, he chose to be buried in Bendigo.Invoice book, beige cover with black spine. Invoices numbered from 417 to 496 all blank. At top left corner: Phone 999, L.V. The permanent fruit fly road blocks in Victoria began in 1958. The first was set up on the Lincoln Causeway between Albury and Wodonga. The aim was to protect the Victorian fruit export industry, the largest in the country. Cars would be stopped and inspected when entering Victoria. At peaks periods, such as Easter and school holidays, there were up to 10 inspectors at the 24 hour checkpoint near the former butter factory on the Lincoln Causeway. Local residents could apply for a pass such as this one which would be displayed on their window, but were still subject to random checks. Hundreds of tonnes of fruit each week was confiscated and pulverised by Department of Agriculture staff. The road block was closed in 1980, partly due to the increased traffic flows and the cost of maintaining inspection points.This image reflects government measures taken to protect the fruit industry in Victoria.A transparent sticker designed to be applied to a car window for motorists to pass through Department of Agriculture fruit fly control points. In the centre there a group of people who appear to be conducting a funeral, some appear to be dressed in Free Masons clothing or Rechabite, four men are holding poles, two are wearing Free Masons bibs. To the left of the photo are what appears to be mounds from fresh graves. On the right side of the photo there is a monument, possibly for a grave, a picket fence runs along the back of the crowd.
