The Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as the mounted arm of the Victorian Colonial defence force in 1885. It was under the command of Colonel Thomas Caradoc Rose (Tom) Price (1842-1911). Price was born in Tasmania, educated in Hobart Town and at Scotch College, Melbourne, before entering the East India Military College, Addiscombe, England. He was commissioned on 7 July 1861 in the Madras Infantry and began twenty years’ service in India with several regiments, retiring in April 1883. On his return to Victoria he was tasked with raising of a force of one thousand, to be known as the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and appointed a lieutenant-colonel in the Permanent Military Forces. Companies of the Victorian Mounted Rifles were raised in rural districts throughout Victoria. The soldiers were paid a small annual allowance and were required to provide their own horse. Many members served in contingent to the Boer War. After Federation the VMR was gathered up into the Australian Light Horse. Born in 1900, Mona was the daughter of Florence Jane McDowall Stuart (1867-1936) and George Hudson Grant (1864-1910) who married in 1899. He was a surveyor and they lived in Albany Crescent, Surrey Hills. Her full name was Jessie Mona Stuart Grant and she had a sister Mollie. In 1924 she married Clarence William Willoughby Webster (1895-1980) - SERN 33286. Clarence was born in Thorpedale where his father was a teacher. He was living in View Street Mont Albert and was a law student when he enlisted on 3 October 1916. After discharge on 10 May 1919, Clarence returned to his studies. He joined a legal firm in the city which became Pearce & Webster (later Pearce Webster Dugdale). Margaret Johnson was born and raised in the country. She came to Melbourne to attend secondary school at age eleven. She stayed with the family of her uncle, Dr Carrington, in their home / surgery still located at 174 Union Road, the Surrey Hills Medical Centre. Later, whilst waiting to commence her kindergarten training course, she met Jessie Black and they became firm friends and it was through Jessie that Margaret met Jessie’s brother and her future husband, Thorby Black. The Black family had been residents of Mont Albert for many years and Thorby was in the air force at the time. Margaret and Thorby were married at St Stephens Presbyterian Church in Surrey Hills on 1 May 1948. Her wedding dress was bought at Canns on the corner of Elizabeth Street & Flinders Lane. It was one in an exhibition held as part of a Surrey Hills Festival in the early 2000's. Like others in the exhibition, it no longer had its train and the sleeves have been shortened. Margaret recalled that after her wedding she wore it as an evening dress. Her bridesmaids’ dresses were a little unusual for the time, as they too were white and their flowers were subdued pink and blue. According to Margaret, the popular fashion was for brightly coloured dresses and bright flowers for the bridesmaids. The positioning of the garlands of flowers in their hair was also unusual. They were placed at the back so that the congregation could see them during the ceremony. Housing was in very short supply in the years following the war, so after they were married, Margaret and Thorby moved into a small flat created at Dr Carrington’s surgery. The house was variously known as ‘Mintaro’, ‘Montiere’ and ‘Goonoo Goonoo’, the later after 1920 when it was purchased by Natale Cerini and his wife Ethel May (nee Swan), who were married in 1918. Built 1887-1888 by William Wigley. The original colour was deep cream with dark green trim. Property included a block of land on south side and also land to the north. The original coach house was on what became 213 Union Road and was used to build a yacht in by the then neighbours, the Flemings. The street plane trees were replaced in the 1970s with melaleucas and in 1987 new plane trees were planted between the melaleucas. Miss Jane Elizabeth (Jean) Pearson is second from the left. From c1927 - c1950 Miss Pearson had the cake and confectionery shop at 147 Union Road. It was later a milk bar, next to Henry Jamieson’s radio and electrical shop. Miss Pearson sold Farey’s cakes which were very popular and in a trellised-off section also served morning and afternoon teas. Her sisters often helped. Silversticks, white knights, licorice straps were among a wide selection of sweets to be bought for 1d. – or even ½d. Jean was one of a large family born to John William Pearson and Agnes Yeaman. Jean was born at Riddell's Creek in c1884. She died in 1966. She had 3 brothers and a total of 6 sisters. Lillias Irene and Grace Stewart died in infancy or childhood, so the other sisters in the photo were (not necessarily in order): Ethel Agnes born in 1885, who married James Charles Robertson; Catherine Myra born in 1887, unmarried; May Dempster born 1891, unmarried; and Stella Christie born 1897, who married Cecil Hunt Aston in 1928. Jean was in business as a confectioner at 3 High Street, Malvern in 1927; in Union Road 1941-1949 and resided (presumably in retirement) at 37 Mayston Street, Hawthorn in 1954. At the later address May and Catherine are also listed variously in 1954 and 1963. (Ref: electoral rolls). The Hawthorn address was the 'family home' - address of John William Pearson who died in 1944, appointing Jean as his executrix. Frank and Blanche Cornell had their home built in 1904. Mr Cornell was a keen gardener, usually doing 2 hours’ work before going to work. He was a director of Buckley & Nunn, Bourke Street, having worked up from a position as shipping clerk. Frank was a great supporter of and worker for the Empire Day celebrations in the 1905-1911 period and also of the bowling club. He was also a keen photographer. Known as ‘You Yangs’, 15 Russell Street was built in 1891. 1898–1900: Home of Mr and Mrs John Reaburn, later of 'Fairbank', Union Road. John Reaburn (1873-1963); Jane (Jeannie) Nelson Harkins (1875-1959) 1922–1954: Theodore Hendy and family. Mr Hendy spent some time in South Africa gaining architectural experience. One of his houses, in Barton Street, near the Surrey College has some features which may well relate to South African architecture. He also extended and updated the Surrey Hills Primary School buildings. He was impressed by Baden Powell whom he met in Sth Africa and when he heard about the scouting movement being launched in 1907, he took up the idea and started Surrey Hills Scouts in 1909. Spenceycroft was home of James and Elizabeth Rayment, who had a dairy farm in the area in the 1870s. The house was located in Canterbury Road next to the Surrey Hills Presbyterian Church. For many years, it was hidden behind a large fence sheltering it from the noise of traffic along Canterbury Road. It has been claimed that it incorporated part of the original farmhouse built on the site by George Klepper, who planted a vineyard in the area. George’s family was one of a number of German families who settled in Surrey Hills during the later part of the 19th century. In recent years Spenceycroft was sold several times and became increasingly derelict. Since its last sale, it has been demolished. Some of the above may be in error. 1 Russell Street was built in 1888 and from 1888–1905 (maybe 1911, as his death notice says he died at Russell Street) it was the home of James Burrell, a blacksmith. His smithy was on the corner of Canterbury Road. In 1893 a block of land (No.3 ) was bought to establish the fire station and James Burrell acted as fire officer and stored the reel and hose until the station was built. From 1911–1928 it was the fire station residence, as the brigade gained status. James Burrell (1860-1911) married Elizabeth Wilson (1862-1925). She was daughter of Edward Wilson. They had 4 children: James Herbert, known as Bert (1888-1953); Aleck (1890-1951); William Spencer, known as Bill, (1893-1976) and Elsie May (1898-1990). Both James and Elizabeth Burrell are buried in Burwood Cemetery. From 1930–1943 Michael Ginnane, retired station master, and members of his family lived in the house. Michael Ginnane (1864-1935) married Annie Mary Brock (1868-1945). Both were born in the Ballarat area. They had 10 children. From 1913-1917 he was station master at Woodend. In the 1925 electoral rolls the family is listed as living at Surrey Hills station. There was a station master's house adjacent to the station (demolished and the site now part of the car park accessed off Blackburn Street). They are again listed here in the 1925 electoral roll. By 1931 they are at 1 Russell Street and he is listed as a retired station master. At ‘Dalriada’, previously ‘Clifton’, 77 Union Road, corner Bona Vista Avenue (dem.) Home of Charles and Sarah Steele pictured with Bertrand Steele and wife Amy, daughter of John Woodhead of ‘Kirklands’. ‘Dalriada’ was built on Woodhead’s land. In 1892 Bertrand purchased the pharmacy on S.W. corner Canterbury/Union Road and moved it to the ‘new’ Surrey Hall. By 1894 he had returned it to its former site where he remained in business until 1900 when he married Amy and went overseas. In 1910 Bertrand Steele became Professor of Chemistry in Brisbane. As his son-in-law, Bertrand was executor of the estate of John Woodhead of ‘Kirklands’. Charles Henri Dillon Steele (1869-1935) - Parents: Samuel Madden Steele and Harriet Sarah Acock. He married Sarah Margaret Russell. They had 2 daughters Margaret Dillon Steele who married William Brayshay Woodhouse, dentist, and Harriet Vevers Steele. From Dentistry Museum site: “Charles Henry Dillon Steele was one of the pioneers of Dentistry in Victoria. He was born in England in 1869 and came to Melbourne in 1889. He was registered by the Dental Board in 1890 and practiced in Collins Street until his death in 1935. His daughter Margaret Dillon (Nancy) Steele graduated BDSc Melbourne in 1929 and obtained the degree of DDS in Toronto in 1931. She returned to Melbourne and rejoined her father in practice at 90 Collins Street and later at 147 Collins Street. In 1935 she married William Brayshaw Woodhouse (BDSc, DSc Melbourne) who bought the practice of Mr. Steele in that year and continued in practice there until 1980. Their son Anthony Dillon Woodhouse graduated BDSc (Melb) 1958 and DDS (Toronto) in1966 and continued in the old family practice established by Mr. Steele." In earlier years (c1923-1943), the shop was known as Mrs Sim's shop. Note that prior to c1928 the property was numbered 292 Mont Albert Road. Electoral rolls describe Victoria May Sims (nee Munday) as a confectioner but she also sold school requisites and other general household items. Her husband Harry Pascoe Sims died in 1926. The shop was taken over by Leonard William James Etheridge, whom electoral rolls and probate records variously describe as a grocer, stationer or builder. His sons Austin, Douglas and Leonard attended nearby Chatham Primary School. Leonard senior and his wife Marie Wanda (nee Chambers) lived in various locations around Surrey Hills after leaving the shop. The house was built in 1910. The Clota and Sans families were part of a group of families of Spanish (Catalan) background who lived around Surrey Hills, many of whom are buried in Box Hill Cemetery. The house was built for Antonio and Josepha Clota and passed on to their daughter Josephine Sans and her family. Antonio's full name: Antonio Eusebio Miquel CLota (1869-1940; died Surrey Hills) had 3 brothers who came to Australia with him. Louis Clota (1864-1925); Marcus Clota (1866-1940) died Surrey Hills; Eusebio Clota (1869-1919). Their parents remained in Spain. Josephine Clota and Kim Sans had photos taken on the front entrance to the house when they were married on 9 May 1919. This photo was taken in c1910. ‘Warlingham’ has many typical Victorian features and has been restored and extended. The first owner was Thomas Kennedy Vernon Coburn, a solicitor. His wife was Sara Ethelwyn (Winnie) Cornell; they married on 26 March 1890. They had a large family and their eldest son (Arthur Wheeler Coburn) was born at 'Wannacul' Surrey Hills on 11 January 1891. The Coburns seem to have moved often and Thomas was declared insolvent in 1894, in part it would seem as a result of the land crash. The next owner was George Lumsden, grocer who is believed to have been there 1892-1896. He was married to Emma Louise Sim. During the years c1913-1919 Mr William Joseph Trenerry (manufacturer) and his wife Elsie (nee Capon) lived here. In the 1919 electoral roll the house name is given as 'Mosman', which may be a reference to Elsie Trenerry's origins; she came from Sydney. See also SHP1927 and SHP1384. Date is approximate. In 1920 this became the home of Mr and Mrs Robert Moore, whose daughter Mabel Annie married Norman Brodley Carter of Mont Albert. The house was named after 'Glenisla', a western District grazing property located between Hamilton and Horsham on the Henty Highway and on the edge of the Grampians National Park. This was established as a super-fine wool stud in 1860 and was passed down the family until it was sold in 1922. The family transferred from this property to Melbourne. Robert is listed as a grazier in the 1924 electoral roll at Chestnut Street. With him are Victor Cecil listed as a carpenter; Isabella, Mabel Annie and Edgar Gilbert listed as an orchardist. In 2003 the house was extant minus the verandas. This photo may have been taken from the rear of the property. Both he and his wife Ida, nee Schade, (1882-1963) were born in Germany. They married in Victoria in 1908. Their home was called 'Westfalia' (ref: 1919 electoral roll), presumably after the region in NW Germany. They had at least 4 children: Carl Bernard - b 1909 Marie Eliese - b 1910 Erna Helena - b 1913; d 1996 - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. Bernard George - b 1914; d 1987 (Surrey Hills) - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. The family were associated with Our Holy Redeemer and also donated class photos of the school to the collection. Carl and Ida are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (RC 032-0034). The semi-circular bay window is not original to the house. This home has had a 2nd storey added to it in late 1990s. According to a family descendant (REF: Email 1/8/20 from grandson) Carl Theodor Offszanka purchased the home in 1913 for £616. He also purchased the adjoining vacant block of land at 42 Guildford Road and ran a large orchard on it before later selling it. This appears to have been between 1920-1930. He is listed in electoral rolls at 44 Guildford Road from 1915, occupation furrier, with his wife Ida (nee Schade, 1882-1963), also born in Germany. They were married in Victoria in 1908. In later electoral rolls at the same address are Erna Helena (b 1913; d 1996) and Maria Eliese (b 1910; m Benedict Francis Rieusset in 1936). Both daughters are listed as typists. Also listed is Bernard George (b 1914; d 1987) who in later electoral rolls is described as a process worker. He served in the AIF in the Second World War. Not listed is Carl Bernard b 1909.
