Postcard looking west along Collins Street. just to the east of Swanston Street. At the time of the photograph all trams have been converted to The Met colour scheme. Swanston Street was converted into Swanston walk during 1992, so photo is late 1980's or early 1990's. There are seven trams in the view: A1 239 (City Route 42), SW5 749 in Swanston Street, A1 232 (Mont Albert Route 42), two advertising cars. Collins Street is busy. Photo of the Mail Exchange Building with a cable tram loading prior to departure and a number of motor vehicles. The photo shows the monumental construction for the then Post Master Generals Department. Typed report by Mr Alex Cameron of the PMTT titled "Chairman giving a comparison between Original and Revised estimate of Noyes Bros in regard to proposed tramways" Orginal Estimate dated May 1906, revised June 1907. One of the principal savings was the purchase of power from the Electric Traction and Lighting Co instead of building their own Power Station. Photograph of SW6 850 (Route 77) at the Prahran terminus, Chapel St and Brighton Road, probably soon after its construction and entry into traffic on 31-3-1939, although the roof appears weathered. The tram has a sign promoting off peak travel, dash canopy lights and a tail light. In the background are the shops at this location. Colour slide of VR class tram 53, route 30, westbound in La Trobe St on the bypass built to enable the construction of the Melbourne Central or Museum station between Dec 1973 and 1978 - see reference. The concrete looks relatively new in the photograph. The tram was originally built by the Victorian Railways for their St Kilda Brighton tramway in 1942. It is currently on display at the Melbourne Tram Museum. Many of the buildings in the background have since been demolished.
